2 Page 2 Dr. Axel Ruprecht Reflects on his Academic Career in Oral Radiology Dr. Axel Ruprecht is probably the only professor you ll meet who has taught in six different institutions, on three continents, and in two languages. He has also been tenured at three different schools! Axel was born in Fleestedt, Germany, but at the age of six, his family moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Because of his upbringing, he is fluent in both English and German. Dr. Ruprecht received his DDS and MScD degrees in oral radiology/oral biology from the University of Toronto in 1968 and His first academic appointment, and first tenure, was at the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario) in the division of oral radiology, department of oral medicine. He was also an honorary lecturer in the radiology department. In 1975, the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) offered Axel a tenure-track faculty position where he became chair of the department of diagnosis and oral radiology. While there he also became assistant dean of clinics. In 1981, Axel Ruprecht received an opportunity to teach on another continent -- at King Saud University College of Dentistry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he taught for five years in the biomedical dental sciences department. This was a relatively new dental school; its first class of male students graduated in (The first female class graduated approximately one and one half years after that.) The college was on a semester system, so each course was taught twice a year, and males and females were taught separately. As a result, Dr. Ruprecht gave each lecture four times a year. (Above): Dr. Ruprecht in traditional Saudi dress: an ankle-length wool or cotton shirt (thawb) and a large square of cotton (ghutra) over a skullcap (kufiyah), which is held in place with a cord circlet (igaal). Most of the time, however, he wore western clothing. In 1986, Dr. Ruprecht returned to Europe to teach radiology at the University of Marburg in Marburg, West Germany. With this job, his bilingual skills were obligatory because he taught the class in German. (His students also spoke English and Latin.) Axel describes his experience as both an interesting and frustrating year. It was interesting because the students were great, and it was the first time he had a class of students who had studied as much Latin as he had had (four years) or more (eight years). The year was also frustrating because radiology was taught the semester before pathology, so Dr. Ruprecht had to spend much of his time teaching the pathology that was necessary to understand the radiology. He went to the director of the college, who was the equivalent of a college dean, to ask if the two classes could be reversed. Although the director understood the problem, he could not change it because all 26 dental schools in West Germany had the same timetable. This allowed students to change universities, but any other changes became almost impossible. Dr. Ruprecht s return to North America (and to his possible final academic stop) occurred in 1987 when he accepted a faculty position in the Department of Oral Pathology & Diagnosis at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He was hired to address a Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA) recommendation that radiology at the college needed major changes. Axel recalls that at the time he was one of only two faculty members at the college who had a computer (former faculty Dr. Nelson Logan was the other computer user.) Axel put his Mac to immediate use. (Later on, after computers became more common at the college, his use of a Mac was overthrown by the college-wide use of PCs.) Along with the CODA recommendation to reorganize radiology, formal lectures in radiology became a necessity. Axel developed this component for the first- and second-year dental students curriculum. Lectures were initially spread over eight weeks during one semester, in four-hour lectures. Later the classes became shorter and were better dispersed over the semester. This gave the students some introductory experience in pre-clinical exercises and they were also able to familiarize themselves with the radiology machine. See Axel Ruprecht, 3

3 Page 3 Axel Ruprecht continued from 2 One of the major changes in dentistry over the years occurred when Dr. Ruprecht co-chaired a seven-year project to establish oral & maxillofacial radiology as the ninth dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). On October 13, 1999, the new specialty was officially recognized by the ADA. Coincidentally, says Axel, 26 years before, on the exact day (October 13, 1973), Canada had recognized the same specialty. In this case, he was the chair of the committee that sought specialty recognition in Canada. (Also, coincidentally, both occurred on Axel s birthday: October 13!) With the new specialty s official recognition, Axel Ruprecht was appointed as the first CODA commissioner for oral and maxillofacial radiology and the College of Dentistry became one of the first two U.S. dental schools to have their Advanced Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology program accredited by CODA. Among his favorite accomplishments at Iowa, he knows through feedback that the UI dental graduates have generally been much better educated in radiology than their counterparts elsewhere, and that many of his graduates from the Advanced Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology program have gone on to become the leaders in oral and maxillofacial radiology in the U.S. and abroad. Another major transition for the UI Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine has been the move from analog (film-based) radiography to digital radiography. Digital radiography now results in instantaneous viewing, with the capability of simultaneous viewing by more than one person. (A downside of digital radiography, Dr. Ruprecht adds, occurs if the system crashes.) He notes that the use of cone beam CT imaging is a relatively new innovation in dentistry that allows specialists to see much more detail in multiple directions of the anatomy and pathosis of the head and neck region, and assists in treatment planning for such things as dental implants and more extensive surgery. Six institutions and three continents later, Axel Ruprecht views retirement as an opportunity to spend much more time at his family cottage on Four Mile Lake northeast of Toronto (Ontario). Having only visited it for short periods of time over the years, this year he hopes to spend July and August ( and maybe September ) visiting the cottage with his family, including his grandsons: Max, age 4, and Benjamin, age 6. He is interested in purchasing a sailboat, perhaps a Flying J model. Canoeing down the Burnt River might also be a distinct possibility. And there are always the Toronto Blue Jays baseball games to watch! Dr. Tom Southard to be Interviewed on Iowa Public Radio s Talk of Iowa on June 1 Department of Orthodontics DEO, Dr. Thomas Southard, will be interviewed on the Iowa Public Radio (IPR) morning show Talk of Iowa on June 1 at 10 a.m. The show s host is Charity Nebbe. Dr. Southard will discuss the topic Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment. If you are unable to listen to the program, you will still be able to either hear the interview or read the text after it airs at

4 Page 4 The Mystery of the Certificate Discovered at the College of Dentistry With apologies to Winston Churchill, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma was discovered here recently at the College of Dentistry. When Melanie Forbes, Filling Station manager, was notified she would have to quickly move out of her office space because of the Galagan Auditoria renovation, she began cleaning out what had once been a storage room. Included in the space was an antique dental cabinet, and in one drawer, Melanie discovered a state-issued certificate. And so the mystery began. Logically, Melanie would have discovered a dental certificate of some sort in the old dental cabinet, but here was the first surprise: the certificate was from a state pharmacy board. And there was a second surprise: the certificate had been issued by the state of Missouri! Like congealed oatmeal, the mystery (or plot) had thickened. Knowing that the current dental science building s construction was finished in 1973, one might assume this certificate would have been newer than the age of the building. Surprise number three, however, revealed that it was issued in 1909 to a Frank S. Bonnell. It was time to refer to two important research resources: Google and the Fairfield Public Library. Here are the results of further gumshoe work: From the Fairfield Daily Ledger, March 26, 1971, p. 65. Courtesy of Mr. Richard Thompson. Frank Sumner Bonnell was born in 1884 in Larned, Kansas, and raised in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He graduated from a Philadelphia school with a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry, and then followed that accomplishment with a degree in pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. In 1913, this industrious fellow went on to receive his M.D. degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. After completing specialty training in 1915 at Washington University in St. Louis, he settled in Fairfield, Iowa, to practice medicine. Dr. Bonnell married, and the couple had one daughter and one son. Sadly, his son died at the age of 11 in a vehicular accident. He invested in local real estate -- in 1922, he constructed an apartment building in Fairfield. Dr. Bonnell also built what became the Fairfield Hotel and eventually acquired two additional buildings. He performed 2,150 tonsillectomies during his career as an ear, nose and throat specialist. He retired in Frank S. Bonnell died in 1971 at the age of 86. We ll probably never know why Dr. Bonnell s Missouri pharmacy certificate ended up in an old dental cabinet stored in a DSB space. It remains, as Churchill once said in a reference to Russia, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

5 Page 5 Food for Thought A Prius just tried to race me at the stop light. I totally had it for the first 100 feet, but I can only walk so fast. Dental Filling Station June 1-5, 2015 What do you call a dinosaur with a extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. Two fish are in a tank. One turns to the other and asks How do you drive this thing? A grasshopper orders a libation in a restaurant and the waiter says, We have a drink named after you. The grasshopper replies, You have a drink named Steve? It s hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally. There was a prison break and I saw a small man climb up the fence. As he jumped down, he sneered at me and I thought, well that s a little condescending. Dry eraser boards are remarkable.
