Houchen Bindery Schedule 4 Recognize Your Co-Worker Dr. David Drake Appointed as UI Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. David Drake, Dental Research and Department of Endodontics, has been appointed by UI President Sally Mason as a new faculty athletics representative. He will serve as one of two representatives who advise the president, monitor compliance with student athlete eligibility and other National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, and serve as the UI s institutional voice at national meetings and conferences. Dr. Drake will replace Dr. Gene Parkin, College of Engineering, who is retiring. Dr. Ellie Herman, College of Education, will continue to serve as the second representative. Dr. Drake has served on several UI committees, including the Graduate Council, the Faculty Senate, and Faculty Council. He was Faculty Senate president from 2009 to From 2011 to 2013, he also served as senior associate to President Mason. Most recently, he has served as Presiding Officer of the Judicial Commission from In 2011, Dr. Drake received the Board of Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and also the Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service. The research will determine the molecular function and potential underlying mechanism(s) mediated by a member of the microrna-200 family on major proinflammatory and bone factors that cause periodontitisassociated bone loss. It will establish a proof of concept in which this specific microrna can be used to inhibit periodontal bone loss. Dr. Hong is principal investigator for the project. Brad A. Amendt, associate dean for research; Kim Brogden, director of Dows; and Dr. Ali Salem, College of Pharmacy, are co-investigators.

2 Page 2 Dr. Axel Ruprecht and Special Committee Finish Review and Update of Position Statement on CBCT Use in Endodontics Dr. Axel Ruprecht, professor emeritus, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, has concluded his membership on the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology s (AAOMR) Joint Special Committee to Review and Revise the Position Statement on the Use of Cone- Beam-Computed Tomography (CBCT) in Endodontics. The joint statement is a revision of the 2010 position on the use of CBCT in endodontics with regard to ionizing radiation, as well as clinical recommendations, anatomical considerations and appropriate use of CBCT. Dr. Rodrigo Rocha Maia Receives Two ADEA Research Grants Dr. Rodrigo Rocha Maia, Department of Operative Dentistry, has received two grants from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). A $4,100 ADEA grant will support his research project, Comparison of Light Propagation in Dental Tissue and Resin-Based Composite by Lasers. The use of lasers (He- Ne) in three different wavelengths (red, green and blue) will be used to evaluate the light propagation (absorption, transmittance, attenuation coefficient, scattering and back scattering) in enamel, dentin and dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) and to compare the difference among three incremental build-up techniques: one shade (body shade), two shades (enamel and dentin shades) and three shades (Above): A human molar slab (1.5 mm thickness) irradiated with a He-Ne blue laser (wave length 405 mm) used to evaluate the light propagation. (enamel, transparent and dentin shades) using a nano-filled resin based composite. Dr. Rocha Maia is principal investigator. Dr. Hanan Adel Elgendy, an operative dentistry resident, is co-investigator. A $3,300 ADEA grant will support Dr. Rocha Maia s research on Esthetic Blending: Visual vs. Spectrophotometer Data analysis for Different Bevels in Class 4 RBC s Direct Restorations. The use of bevels in anterior direct resin restorations has been advocated for both improved retention and esthetics of class IV restorations. Research is available to support the retentive aspect of bevels but there is limited scientific evidence to support the esthetic need and a lack of literature on what type of bevel to use on a fractured incisor to make the finish line disappear. The goal of this research will be to determine what type of bevel to use on class IV buildups. Dr. Rocha Maia is principal investigator. Dr. Tracy D Antonio, an operative dentistry resident, is co-investigator. Dr. Azeez Butali Gives Presentation During National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council Meeting in Bethesda, MD Dr. Azeez Butali, Dental Research, and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, recently gave a presentation during the 209 th Meeting of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council, Career Development Mechanism and Progress Report, which was held in Bethesda, MD. After Dr. Butali s talk, Genetics and Genomics of Cleft Lip and Palate in the African Population, there were excellent questions and feedback from the audience. Associate Dean for Research Brad A. Amendt, who attended Dr. Butali s presentation, commented that Dr. Butali s presentation was outstanding it was well received and should really help him in his career.

3 Page 3 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Ms. Neda Barrett The College of Dentistry and Clinic Administration welcome Ms. Neda Barrett who is replacing Ms. Ann Huss as the new administrative services manager. (Ann has become the hospital administrator for Hospital Dentistry, located in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion.) Neda grew up in Sweden where she received her master s degree in international business administration. She moved to the U.S. in 2006 and worked for the UI Obermann Center until 2013, when she moved to Denver to work for the University of Colorado, Denver. Neda recently moved back to the Iowa City area with her two children, four-yearold Lily and eighteen-month-old Henrik. In her free time, Neda enjoys running and she is also a Zumba instructor. Dean Johnsen Attends Senator Charles Grassley s Town Hall Meeting in Washington, Iowa Dean David Johnsen attended Senator Charles Grassley s July 1 town hall meeting, which was held in Washington, Iowa, at the county courthouse. About 30 people attended. Dean Johnsen said, As always, the senator handled the eclectic questions deftly. The dean reported that he was able to publicly thank Senator Grassley for all he is doing for the country and for Iowa. (Above): Dean David Johnsen with Senator Charles Grassley. Dr. Ronald Ettinger, professor emeritus, Dental Research and Department of Prosthodontics, received a black polo shirt from his daughter, Stephanie. The shirt s text comments on the confusion of geography-challenged Americans who think that Iowa s main crop is potatoes or one of our major cities is Cleveland.
