The plenary session s topic was antibiotic resistance as a global crisis resulting from antibiotic overuse/misuse and an examination of successful clinic treatment approaches as well as the difficulties with other attempts (e.g., reaching intracellular microbial targets within tissues, specificity, redundancy, etc.) Local Research Day, Part 2: Banquet & Awards Ceremony See pages 4-14

2 Page 2 Department of Periodontics Faculty and Residents Attend Midwest Society of Periodontology Meeting Several Department of Periodontics faculty and residents attended the Midwest Society of Periodontology (MSP) Meeting, which was held in Chicago on February 24-26, (Left): Dr. Gustavo Avila Ortiz gave a Lunch and Learn presentation, "Evaluation of a Novel Ridge Preservation Technique: A Clinical, Histologic, and Volumetric Study," which reviewed the efficacy of ridge preservation and included results from a recent clinical study that he conducted. (Left): Dr. Paula Weistroffer was elected secretary of the MSP during their annual business meeting. Over the past two years, she has been a member of the MSP Executive Board as the chair of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. All of the Periodontics residents and several faculty members attended the educational sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

Says Dr. Bill Johnson: The Delta Sig Delta team was the All University Champions in We then played Iowa State in Kinnick Stadium and won on the last play of the game. We represented the university and state at the national flag football tournament in Saint Louis. We lost the first game to the some former professionals and Minnesota Viking taxi squad members. Their quarterback was, I believe, Gary Cuozzo, a former AFL and NFL quarterback who was an orthodontist.

All faculty and staff members must be initially treated at UI HealthWorks in North Liberty for any work-related injury or illness. (Note the change in location from UIHC Employee Health Clinic to the North Liberty clinic). EXCEPTION: care needed as a result of needle sticks, blood borne pathogens, and infectious diseases will continue to be provided by the University Employee Health Clinic at UIHC. UI HealthWorks is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Workers Health Clinic - Clinic A is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If possible, please phone UI Health- Works ( ) or the Employee Health Clinic (3-8653) prior to arriving for treatment. When UI HealthWorks or the Workers Health Clinic is closed, the UIHC Emergency Treatment Center should be used. You must inform the Emergency Center staff that you are requesting treatment due to a workplace injury. Emergencies are considered to be the sudden, serious, and unexpected onset of symptoms that require immediate medical care. Please carefully note the following important fact: any initial treatment for a work-related injury or illness received outside of UI HealthWorks, the Workers Health Clinic, or University Hospital Emergency Center will not be covered by either Worker s Compensation or your University health insurance plan. 16 Page 16 Disruption of College of Dentistry s ATM Service in March The University of Iowa Community Credit Union plans to remove the College of Dentistry s ATM machine in early March. A new ATM will replace the old ATM in May. Hills Bank will become the provider.
