Dr. Donald and Betty Ostrus College of Dentistry Receives $500,000 Gift Support From Dr. Donald C. Ostrus The University of Iowa College of Dentistry recently received gift support totaling $500,000 from Dr. Donald C. Ostrus of Los Altos, CA. A current commitment of $250,000 and an additional planned gift of $250,000, made through the UI Foundation, will support Transformation for Tomorrow: the Campaign for the UI College of Dentistry Building. In recognition of this Ostrus Family gift, the prosthodontic clinic will be named the Ostrus Family Prosthodontic Clinic. The named area will be located in the 4 th floor southeast clinic wing of the Dental Sciences Building after it has been renovated. Dr. Donald Ostrus, who is a retired dentist, holds two degrees from the UI: a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts and Dentistry (1948) and a D.D.S. degree (1950). Galen B. Schneider, DDS, PhD, head of the Department of Prosthodontics, thanked the Ostrus Family for their continued support of both the College of Dentistry and the Department of Prosthodontics. He stated, This generous gift will allow us to continue our departmental mission of providing excellence in patient care, teaching, and research for many future generations of dental students, residents, and faculty. David C. Johnsen, D.D.S., the dean of the college, said, We are extremely grateful for Don s lifelong dedication to the college and especially for this generous gift, which will help ensure that the college s new physical home will be state of the art. Dr. Samir Bishara Honored During the 2010 Annual Meeting of the ABO College of Diplomates Retirement Celebration for Helen Schaapveld July 30 See page 11 Dr. Samir Bishara, Department of Orthodontics, was honored during the recent 32 nd Annual Meeting of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). The 2010 meeting was dedicated to Dr. Bishara for his dedication and leadership to the College and the College Council and additionally because his guidance to the Council is immeasurable Dr. Bishara has served as president of the ABO College of Diplomates (1992). He also received the College s Founders Award in 1997.

The following students received awards. Christi Larson received the W. Philip Phair Preventive Dentistry Award, which was presented to her by Ms. Marsha Cunningham- Ford. The award is presented to students who show exceptional interest and leadership toward the improvement of health and the well-being of society through a commitment to preventive dentistry. (Continued on pages 4-6) Institute of Higher Learning Program Students Visit the College of Dentistry A group of nineteen 9-12 th grade students from the Iowa City/Coralville area, who are participating in a joint Iowa City School District and University of Iowa sponsored Institute of Higher Learning Program, visited the College of Dentistry on Wednesday, July 21. Dr. Sherry Timmons, associate professor, Oral Pathology, Radiology, & Medicine, provided an overview of dentistry as a profession and available career options. The drop-off location is in the Office of the Dean (N309). Dr. Jerry Denehy and Son Canoe in the Quetico This was the 20th trip for my son, Mike, and me to the Quetico. Dr. Jerry Denehy, head of the Department of Operative Dentistry, recounts his recent canoeing adventure with his son, Mike: During one week in June, my son and I covered over sixty miles by portaging and canoeing in the Quetico. The Quetico is a protected Canadian wilderness area west of Lake Superior, which borders the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the U.S. side of the border. This network of lakes and portage trails were once traveled by Ojibway Indians and fur traders. The area is noted for its solitude, 600 lakes, cascading waterfalls, and endless forests, as well as great fishing. 6 (2010 Preventive & Community Dentistry Student Awards, cont. from page 5) Page 6 Dr. Susan McKernan (left) received the 1 st place Post-doctoral/Graduate Dental Specialty Award; 1 st place Max Smith Oral Presentation Postdoctoral Competition; 2 nd place Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health; and the LB Sims Outstanding Thesis Award. The awards were presented by Dr. Raymond Kuthy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. Dr. Bhagyashree Pendharkar (middle) and Dr. Oitip Chankanka (right) received the Keith E. Heller Dental Public Health Graduate Research Award, presented by Dr. Steve Levy, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry. Not pictured - Maegan Scott (DDS 10) received the Excellence in Dentistry for the Elderly Award, which was presented by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to students who show exceptional clinical proficiency and understanding of complex oral health needs of the frail elderly and medically complex adults. Katherine Motz (now D3) was recognized for her Procter & Gamble Pre-doctoral Poster Competition Third Place Award. Her mentor was Dr. Teresa Marshall, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry. Jessica Flanigan (now D4) was recognized for her ADA Pre-doctoral Table Clinic Competition Third Place Award. Her mentor was also Dr. Teresa Marshall.

7 (Denehy canoe trip, cont. from page 3) Page 7 One of the six hundred lakes in the Quetico. The lakes are connected by portage trails, rivers and streams. One of the small waterfalls, all of which require portaging around for safety. Travel between lakes can be difficult due to beaver dams, shallow creeks, or long, muddy portages. Seeing moose is a common occurrence, but finding an antler is quite rare. A typical campsite. (Cont. on page 8)

Northern pike, walleye, lake trout and small mouth bass are large and abundant. Fresh walleye on an iron skillet nothing better! Searching for gold at the end of a double rainbow.

Instruction and guidance were provided by senior dental students, Tom Heidenreich, Philip Schmitt, and Aba Mills-Robertson, with assistance from junior dental students, Tony Brantner and Mary Hoppens. Mary Hoppens (D3) helps a local high school student prepare impression materials.

The UI College of Dentistry is recruiting subjects for a research study to evaluate dental fillings of the back teeth. You may qualify if you have: recession of the gumline on your back teeth eroded, abraded areas or notches at the necks of your back teeth near the gumline Call the Dental Clinical Research Center for a screening appointment at (319) Compensation is provided. The DCRC will provide special assistance for people with physical or other disabilities.

14 Page 14 UI and Palmer College Jaw Pain Study Invites Participants People age 21 or older with chronic jaw pain classified as temporomandibular disorder may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study investigating whether the Activator Chiropractic Technique can reduce head and neck pain and the need for prescription pain medications, and improve quality of life. The collaborative study involves the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science's Dental Clinical Research Center, and the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. Study participants will be randomly assigned to one of four different treatment groups. Participation, including follow-up, will last six months and involves examinations and treatment at the UI Dental Clinical Research Center. Participants assigned to chiropractic care will be referred to a private practice in Coralville. All examinations and treatment are provided free of charge.
