2 Diagnostic Radiology S Back-to-Basics October 29 - November 3, 2006 The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa - Lahaina, Hawaii While radiological technique continues to evolve, the underlying diseases and injuries that confront radiologists do not change. Firm understanding of the core concepts of disease processes are the basis for accurate and safe radiological diagnosis and management. This course is designed to review the fundamentals of common clinical disease processes and their influence on radiological appearance, diagnosis, and treatment. Basic concepts in multi-detector row CT, MRI, angiography, and mammography as they apply to imaging disease and normal tissue will be stressed. Common clinical scenarios and safe radiological management will be emphasized for women s imaging, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease, and abdominopelvic disease. Upon completion of the course, the attendee should be able to: -Discuss common pitfalls of diagnosis and interpretation of CT, MRI, and angiography in regard to pulmonary, vascular, hepatic, biliary, pelvic, musculoskeletal, and cardiac disease; - Describe fundamental concepts of disease in the chest, breast, abdomen, pelvis, musculoskeletal, and vascular systems, including mechanisms of disease, patterns of spread, and associated disease and treatment complications; - Appropriately triage and manage arterial and venous emergencies, including arterial hemorrhage and aneurysms; - Safely interpret radiological images of the abdominal, cardiovascular, breast, and musculoskeletal systems; - Describe the advantages and limitations of newer imaging techniques, including musculoskeletal MRI, CT/MR angiography, and breast MR.

The Island of Maui Named for the mythical demigod who pulled the island from the sea, Maui was formed by two volcanoes connected by a valley of lava. One eruption broke into a set of crags and canyons known today as the tropical West Maui Mountains. The other, named Haleakala (the House of the Sun), rose 30,000 feet from the ocean floor. The dormant volcano stands 10,000 feet high, 3,000 feet deep and is seven miles long. This location is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Maui. Another natural attraction immersed with natural beauty is the road to the town of Hana, which winds around 600 hairpin curves and 56 one-lane bridges passing through the most beautiful waterfalls and lush scenery imaginable. Just near the town of hana is Kipahulu, a section of Haleakala National Park and the site of the famous Seven Pools where water falls into tiered pools leading into the sea. The island of Maui is full of beautiful historic places. Located just 10 minutes from Kapalua is the town of Old Lahaina, the former capital of Hawaii. Once a whaling town, Lahaina is a piece of history that includes a walking tour of its historic and cultural sites such as the Carthaginian II, a 19th century brig that is anchored at Lahaina harbor.
