Candlemas Day came at the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox. It was believed that if the sun came out on February 2 nd, halfway between winter and spring, an animal would cast a shadow thereby predicting six more weeks of wintry weather. Germans watched a badger for the shadow. Ground Hog Day officially began in Punxsutawney, PA in The ground hog, the badger s surrogate, was given the name Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary with his hometown named the Weather Capital of the World. The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, is a member of the squirrel family. In the wild they eat succulent green plants, such as dandelion, clover and grasses. Phil weighs 15 lbs. and thrives on dog food and ice cream in his climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney library. On D Day, Phil is placed in a heated burrow underneath a tree stump on the Gobbler s Knob stage before being pulled out to make his prediction. In case you wondered Phil s accuracy rate is 39%.

4 Peace Poster Winners: (L-R) Melissa Luetgers from Elkins MS, Kelly Furey from Queen Of Angels Academy and Ms. Nancy Herlihy, Queen of Angels Art Instructor President Tim Dunn recognized the Roswell HS National Honor Society members for their efforts in raising $25,000 for Pennies for Patients Guest Speaker City Councilman Don Horton brought us up to date on what is on the horizon in Roswell.
5 On January 21 st the LEO club of Centennial HS, sponsored by the RLC, presented 600 stuffed animals to EMS personnel from Rural Metro Ambulance Service. In addition, commitments have been received from the three Kohl s department stores in Roswell and Milton to donate unsold stuffed animals to them on a quarterly basis. The animals play an important role in helping scared children during an emergency when they, or a loved one, need medical assistance. Simply encouraging a child to hug the animal helps the child relax, allowing the medical crew to more easily assess the child for any medical needs. The simple act of hugging a stuffed animal can melt a child s fear and develop trust of the crew member who gave them a new friend. Animals will be distributed among the Rural/Metro ambulance fleet in metro Atlanta so that its paramedics, EMTs and RNs are able to pass out hugs as needed. (See Page 28 of the January 28 th edition of the Roswell Herald)
6 Recently, all RLC members received a message from Mike Williams, Acting Director of the Lions Camp, asking for their vote to earn a FREE Imagination Playground for the Lions Camp For The Blind. Valued at $7,500 the Playground would be a fantastic addition to the camp s facilities. It only takes a few moments to submit your vote and you can enter once per day every day until March 9 th, The access link is shown below. Put it on your TO DO list and mark it PRIORITY. It costs nothing, yet could do so much to enhance the camp s attendees experience. Previous winner s vote counts have ranged from ,700! If each Lion in Georgia voted twice.we would be a winner. We are counting on you! Web Version When completing the form The Organization should read Lions Camp For The Blind The Organization city should read Waycross, GA
