6 3. SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CURRICULUM AND STUDENT EXPERIENCE Our approach to mbdding sustainability in th curriculum Kl is committd to mbdding sustainability into th whol xprinc of our studnts, from mbdding sustainability into all of our ducational programms, to offring co-curricular sustainability opportunitis for all studnts, to dvloping a cultur of sustainability through th campus nvironmnt in which studnts study and liv. As a ky part of th stratgy for mbdding sustainability ducation into th curriculum and cultur of th Univrsity dvisd during Kl s participation in th HEA s Grn Acadmy Chang programm in 2010/11, sustainability was namd as on of thr cor thms (alongsid mployability and intrnationalisation) in th Distinctiv Kl Curriculum. As a rsult of this, and th prsnc of a sustainability thm in th Kl graduat attributs, all programms ar rquird to addrss sustainability through thir curriculum, whilst additional opportunitis for studnts to ngag in ths aras ar also sought in various co-curricula offrings. As w mov on in 2016 from th Distinctiv Kl Curriculum, to dfining our distinctiv ducational approach, sustainability rmains a ky thm of our approach to th ovrall studnt ducational xprinc. By 2020 Kl aims for all studnts to b abl to articulat ngagmnt with sustainability during thir tim at univrsity whn thy graduat, showing an ovrall improvmnt in studnt sustainability awarnss against a 2015 baslin. Putting sustainability at th hart of th curriculum and studnt xprinc at Kl follows a multi-strandd approach covring th following aras: Intgration into th undrgraduat curriculum, including bing mbddd in all undrgraduat programms, and providing sustainability lctiv offrings and sustainability-focusd dgr programms. Intgration into th postgraduat taught curriculum and postgraduat rsarch studnt training programms. Co-curriculum opportunitis working in partnrship with th Studnts Union, providing support for studnt sustainability socitis and studnt-ld projcts, intgration into xisting socity and activitis structurs, and grn thms in othr univrsity wid vnts Staff dvlopmnt, through on-to-on consultation and support, Education for Sustainabl Dvlopmnt (ESD) workshops tailord for diffrnt disciplins and for nw lcturrs, and onlin training in ESD. In addition, th Education for Sustainabl Dvlopmnt stratgy highlights th nds for intgration with th rst of th Univrsity. For xampl, strong links xist btwn th Estats and Education for Sustainability tam, with studnts carrying out courswork projcts which fd into th managmnt of th stat, whil providing th studnts with xprinc of daling with ral data and problms. Th ovrall aim is to mbd sustainability into many diffrnt aras of activity in th Univrsity so it truly bcoms part of vry staff and studnt s xprinc at Kl and part of th vry cultur of th institution. Cas studis of Education for Sustainability Education for Sustainability confrncs Kl has hostd two mor xtrnal HEA fundd confrncs on Education for Sustainability, following th Studnt Action for Sustainability confrnc at Kl in On ntitld Nw to ESD: Intgrating Education for Sustainabl Dvlopmnt in taching and th studnt xprinc was aimd at staff wanting to find out mor about th ara, and involvd a numbr of xtrnal spakrs talking about how thy hav mbddd sustainability into thir subjct aras, ranging from English, to Businss and Advrtising. Th scond workshop showcasd Kl s achivmnts and approach to mbdding sustainability in all our activitis, and involvd a tour of th Univrsity grounds for a numbr of xtrnal visitors. Ths xtrnallyfundd workshops complmntd th suit of ongoing staff dvlopmnt workshops dlivrd for Kl staff by th Education for Sustainability tam. Environmntal and Sustainability dgr programms Thr ar currntly thr nvironmntal and sustainability-focussd undrgraduat Confrnc gusts larning about how w us our campus in taching programms: a social scinc-focussd dual honours Environmntal Studis run by th School of Politics, Intrnational Rlations and Environmnt; a scinc-focussd dual honours and singl honours Environmntal Scinc ; and a singl honours intrdisciplinary BSc programm in Environmnt and Sustainability run by th School of Physical and Gographical Scincs. Both th Environmntal Scinc and Environmnt and Sustainability programms hav bn accrditd by th Institution of Environmntal Scincs, and includ th option of four yar programms with a work placmnt yar btwn th scond and final yar. At postgraduat lvl thr is a MSc in Environmntal Sustainability and Grn Tchnology, strongly linkd to th work with businss at th Sustainability Hub, and thr is an MA programm in Environmntal Politics and Climat Chang, run from th School of Politics, Intrnational Rlations and Environmnt. Exampls of disciplin-spcific sustainability moduls A numbr of disciplins which may not traditionally b associatd with sustainability hav startd to intgrat sustainability into thir taching programms in a big way. In 2011/12 th School of Pharmacy startd a modul calld Sustainabl Pharmacy, ld by Dr Tony Curtis, as a third yar option modul as part of th MPharm dgr and hav sinc furthr mbddd sustainability into cor taching for a widr numbr of pharmacy studnts. Th singl honours chmistry rout has also introducd a cor modul calld Sustainabl Chmistry, ld by Dr Kathrin Haxton, which looks at th associatd nvironmntal implications of chmistry in vryday lif and th sustainability of chmical procsss. Sustainabl halthcar During th School of Mdicin introducd Sustainabl Halthcar to Yar 3 of th MBChB programm. For furthr information of sustainability curriculum dvlopmnts and projcts at Kl contact Dr Zo Robinson, Dirctor of Education for Sustainability z.p.robinson@kl.ac.uk 4. RESEARCH Sustainability is a ky thmatic priority ara for rsarch at Kl Univrsity. Sustainability rsarch spans across th thr Facultis at Kl, with a rang of disciplinary focussd and intrdisciplinary sustainability rsarch. On of Kl s ral strngths is that its sustainability rsarch involvs acadmic staff from many Schools and disciplins, including nvironmntal scinc, arth scinc, physical and human gography, lif scincs, chmistry, mathmatics, computr scinc, psychology, politics and intrnational rlations, law, sociology and social policy, ducation, film and mdia, conomics, and businss and managmnt amongst othrs! Thr is no distinct Unit of Assssmnt for sustainability within th Rsarch Excllnc Framwork, with units of assssmnt bing largly on singl disciplin lins. Thus staff undrtaking rsarch in diffrnt aras of sustainability formd part of th submissions to thr diffrnt units of assssmnt in 2014 (Earth Systms and Environmntal Scinc, Gnral Enginring, and Politics and Intrnational Studis). Kl s submission to th 2014 REF saw a submission undr an xplicitly nvironmntal unit of assssmnt for th first tim. In ordr to driv forward a nw phas of focussd-sustainability rsarch, in lin with th dvlopmnt of th Smart Enrgy Ntwork Dmonstrator at Kl, two nw Profssor appointmnts hav rcntly bn advrtisd to lad th dvlopmnt of th Smart Enrgy Ntwork Dmonstrator and to had a nw collaborativ rsarch and dvlopmnt cntr with businss and industry. Som sustainability rsarch highlights ar givn blow: Kl Univrsity Sustainability Rsarch Ntwork Kl Univrsity s Sustainability Rsarch Ntwork (KUSRN) was st up to rais th profil of sustainability rsarch across th institution, to bring togthr rsarchrs from diffrnt disciplins who ar rsarching sustainability issus, and to provid support to th sustainability-rlatd PhD studnts who ar basd in many diffrnt Schools across th Univrsity. A ky aspct of th rsarch ntwork has bn th KUSRN sminar sris, which is th univrsity s first cross-faculty intrdisciplinary sustainability sminar sris. Th first two sris of talks hav sn 22 divrs and stimulating rsarch sminars, covring many aspcts of sustainability-rlatd rsarch bing undrtakn at Kl, ranging from sustainabl nrgy, nvironmntal policy and cology, to nvironmntal history, copsychology, nvironmntal ducation and sustainabl computing. Th talks hav attractd ovr 350 attnds in total, with som vry intrsting and livly dbats taking plac! Th Cntr for Undrstanding Sustainabl Prosprity (CUSP) CUSP is a 6m ESRC-fundd rsarch consortium xploring th conomic, cological, social and govrnanc dimnsions of sustainabl prosprity. It xplors altrnativ visions of a sustainabl futur whr individuals and communitis hav th capabilitis ndd to flourish whil living within th cological and rsourc constraints of a finit plant. Th fiv-yar programm is dirctd by Profssor Tim Jackson (Surry Univrsity) with th univrsitis of Kl, Lds, Middlsx, Goldsmiths and Anglia Ruskin. At Kl, rsarchrs within th School of Politics, Philosophy, Intrnational Rlations and Environmnt (SPIRE) ar lading two projcts: GRASSROOTS TRANSITIONS PREFIGURING SUSTAINABILITY This rsarch will xplor th dynamics of associational activity dirctd at sustainability and xamin th complx rlationship btwn formal govrnmntal systms and social movmnt initiativs. It will do this through xploring traditions of small-scal sustainability initiativs and th contstd manings to local community mmbrs and nvironmntal activists. THE POLITICAL FOUNDATIONS OF SUSTAINABLE PROSPERITY This projct xplors th implications of rdfining prosprity on forms of govrnanc in gnral, and dmocracy in particular. This rsarch will contribut to th dbat about th grn stat and assss how political institutions, cultur and practics both challng sustainabl prosprity and crat spac for altrnativs. Sustainabl prosprity raiss particular qustions for th natur of dmocracy in th contxt of th nd for urgnt action rlatd to avrting nvironmntal disastr, and th nd for intllctual frdoms 8 9

8 4. RESEARCH (CONTINUED) that challng dominant intrsts and prsnt social and political altrnativs. It will do this at a rang of scals from th vry local, to national and intrnational institutions. Kl Rsarchrs: Dr Phil Catny; Profssor Brian Dohrty; Dr Marit Hammond For furthr information: p.j.j.catny@kl.ac.uk and Global Chang and Rsilinc of Biogochmical Functions in Ecosystms Currnt rsarch ld by Dr Sami Ullah placs a significant imptus on th mchanistic undrstanding of cological functions to idntify thrsholds of prturbations causd by climat and land us changs byond which th sustainability of ky biogochmical functions ar compromisd. A rcnt NERC fundd multidisciplinary projct idntifid risks of chronic pollution of patbog and forst soils in rspons to atmosphric dposition of ractiv nitrogn and idntifid managmnt and policy actions at catchmnt scal that could hlp mitigat such risks. A projct fundd by th Estonian Rsarch Council is valuating th implications of drainag and agricultural intnsification for scalating grnhous gas missions from patbogs globally. An on-going Royal Socity, NERC and British Byrological Socity fundd projct is invstigating th influnc of global chang issus on bactrial nitrogn fixation in patbogs to stablish th brak and mak thrsholds of this function to hlp forcast th futur functioning of patbogs undr climat chang scnarios. Th ovrall fundamntal rsarch undr this thm is contributing to th ncssary scintific framwork for raching informd policy dcisions of cological sustainability and rsilinc of trrstrial and aquatic cosystms. Sustainability and Film Studis Dr Nil Archr (Lcturr in Film Studis) is currntly working on two projcts, looking at th asthtics and politics of th nvironmnt in contmporary popular cinma. Th first projct xpands on a sction of his rcnt book Th Road Movi: In Sarch of Maning (Wallflowr, 2016), which considrs th intrsction of scinc fiction and th road gnr to crat nw stranging paradigms of mobility and vision within th contxts of nvironmntalism and cocritical thory. Sophi s rsarch xplors th contradictions and th synrgis btwn ths idologis and practics on th ground within univrsitis and how this rlationship has influncd th pursuit, practis and dvlopmnt of sustainability and ESD agndas ovr th last tn yars. Sophi s rsarch is basd on 56 smi-structurd intrviws with rlvant profssionals across ight English univrsitis and a rang of HE organizations and bodis. This rprsnts just a snapshot of th sustainability rsarch bing carrid out at Kl Th Univrsity campus is situatd in 617 acrs of land including laks, acrs of woodland and a wid varity of sports facilitis. Th campus is also hom to th National Collction of Chrris, with currntly around 230 spcis growing hr saw th arrival of a nw Had of Grounds, Jan Barkr committd to th dvlopmnts of Kl s xtnsiv grounds and kn to nsur th vibrancy of th campus, and th considration of both biodivrsity and ducational purposs in its managmnt. In ordr to consrv and nhanc th biodivrsity of this uniqu stat th Natural Estats Advisory Group has bn dvlopd. It includs rprsntativs from th Grounds and Estats tam and Univrsity Acadmic xprts and its rol is to activly harnss and focus th nrgy of popl who us th campus to dvlop and ncourag ral, tangibl improvmnts to th campus nvironmnt and its biodivrsity. Kl s grounds mak it th prfct living laboratory for studnts to study biodivrsity and larn about th valu of th natural world and how to protct and nhanc it, without th nd to travl off campus. Th Grounds tam hav also workd xtnsivly with th studnts at th Sustainabl Studnt Bungalow and with studnts on th allotmnt aras in th Walld Gardn. Th Grounds tam and Natural Environmnt Advisory Group hav rviwd practical issus such as th grass cutting programms to incras aras for consrvation and natural flora dvlopmnts whr possibl. Som aras of th campus had thir rgims changd to match th nds of th grass throughout a vry hot, dry summr, lading to a litrally grnr campus! Working alongsid our Arboriculturalist consultant th Grounds tam hav bn dvloping a Woodland Managmnt Plan which will allow us to driv forward ky works to improv th halth and quality of th many fin trs Kl campus is hom to. Aftr a numbr of yars trying to control th Phytophthora ramorum infction, with th support of th Forstry Commission and FERA (Food and Environmnt Rsarch Agncy) th important dcision was mad to rmov all th Phythophthora ramorum host plants from th woodlands. This has ld to th rmoval of approximatly 1600 Larch trs and thousands of Rhododndron ponticum plants. Th work was compltd in Octobr 2015 and provids th xciting potntial to monitor th rgnration of this ara as wll as an opportunity to rplant spcis to nhanc th arbortum and th biodivrsity of th stat. Proposals ar in plac to continu to rviw th Grounds Programm and to dvlop plans to work with voluntrs from th local community, studnts and rsidnts to hlp control th invasiv wds prsnt at Kl including Japans Knotwd and Himalayan Balsam. Thr ar also plans to incras th quantity of fruit bushs and trs throughout th Halls aras of th campus to nabl studnts and rsidnts to hav accss to thir produc in th futur. A Mmorial Gardn is also bing dvlopd. A plac ddicatd to trs plantd in rmmbranc of formr usrs of th campus, a plac of contmplation, and also a plac for nw tr planting to b usd by th ducational staff on th campus as a taching rsourc for tr idntification. 10 6. ENERGY, WATER AND CARBON EMISSIONS Dav Emly has bn shortlistd for th Staff Sustainability Champion Grn Gown Award, vry wll dsrvd for his dcads of voluntary work to improv th biodivrsity of th Univrsity Estat and th communication of this to th Univrsity s staff, studnts and visitors also saw th official opning of th National Chrry Tr Collction on Kl Official opning of th National Chrry tr collction campus. Kl currntly has ovr 240 varitis of chrry tr, a collction which has grown form th first ornamntal plantings in th 1940s. It is an xciting tim to b part of th Grounds tam at Kl and thr ar many initiativs still to b dvlopd in th coming yars. On of th ky challngs Kl facs is mting our nvironmntal sustainability ambitions whilst also growing th numbr of studnts on campus and th srvics on offr. Th Univrsity has st a stratgic goal to incras studnt numbrs by 30% by To hlp achiv this w ar invsting in nw stat-of-th-art laboratoris, studnt accommodation, commrcial facilitis and upgrads to xisting building spacs to provid th facilitis on campus which will attract futur studnts and contribut to th all-important studnt xprinc. This growth and dvlopmnt of th campus will mak mting absolut carbon rduction targts challnging howvr w will continu to striv for all dvlopmnts to b dlivrd to a high standard of nrgy and nvironmntal fficincy. On larg-scal initiativ that will hlp us achiv this is through our proposals for a Smart Enrgy Ntwork Dmonstrator that you can rad mor about on pag 19. This sction on Estats dvlopmnts looks at nrgy and watr consumption and carbon missions and som of th rcnt major dvlopmnts. Utilitis Consumption In 2010, th Highr Education Funding Council for England, Univrsitis UK and Guild HE publishd a carbon rduction targt and stratgy for highr ducation in England, which st a collctiv and ambitious 34% carbon rduction targt by 2020, against a 1990 baslin for th Univrsity sctor. This targt is alignd with th UK Govrnmnt s 2008 Climat Chang Act and confirms th contribution that th sctor will mak to th UK s carbon rduction fforts. In th sam yar, Kl Univrsity publishd its first Carbon Managmnt Plan which put in plac a targt to rduc its own missions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 against its 1990 baslin. Importantly, it also st out a rout map to achiving this along with an action plan which is updatd annually. Kl Univrsity is committd to this rduction in absolut carbon dioxid quivalnt missions, but th last two yars hav bn challnging as th Univrsity is incrasing th srvics and facilitis on offr to studnts. Th Carbon targts ar basd ntirly on th 1990 data, irrspctiv of growth in studnt numbrs (now about doubl th 1990 numbrs), longr opning hours of som buildings (.g. 24/7 opning for th library during trm-tim), and a gratr numbr of buildings bing includd in th Univrsity s stat (for xampl th inclusion of th Innovation Cntrs sinc August 2012). Th following data shows th outturn of th utility us for th yars 2013/14 and 2014/15 compard to th yar 2012/13. Th Innovation Cntrs ar includd in th figurs both for 2012/13 and 2013/14. It should b notd that th yar 2012/13 was comparativly coldr against prvious yars hnc had a highr gas consumption prdominantly during th wintr priods. To summaris th data, in 2013/14 gas consumption dcrasd against th prvious yar by 14% or 4,595 MWh, primarily as a rsult of a mildr wintr. At th sam tim lctricity us cam down by 2.4% or 281 MWh, largly as a rsult of installing svral solar PV arrays and othr fficincy initiativs. Watr consumption also dcrasd ovr this tim priod by 2.2% or 4,661m 3. In 2014/15, gas consumption was static in comparison to th prvious yar dspit analysis showing that th wintr of this yar was considrably coldr than th prvious yar. This dmonstrats not only that th fficincy of th Univrsity is improving but that ability to control th hating systms is gtting bttr. Elctricity us was down 5.4% du possibly to th implmntation of th CHP unit which rducd th amount of lctricity rquird from th national grid. Watr consumption rducd by a furthr 3.6% on th 2013/14 yar with this bing at last partly th rsult of som watr fficincy masurs implmntd in this yar

11 1 Bank of England inflation rats usd to normalis turnovr figurs to 2015 lvls Carbon Emissions Du largly to a rduction in utility consumption in th past two yars our Carbon Dioxid quivalnt (CO 2 ) missions for Scops 1 & 2 (nrgy-rlatd missions) dcrasd yar on yar by 3.4% (436 tco 2 ) in 2013/14 and 5.9% (740 tco 2 ) in 2014/15 as shown in th figur blow. Univrsity Carbon Emmissions (tco 2 ) This rprsnts a dcras in absolut missions of 7.7% from th 1990 baslin of 12,921 tco 2. Clarly this shows that w ar som way from our 34% rduction by To allow a bttr undrstanding of th impact of th carbon rduction fforts to dat, th Univrsity masurs CO 2 missions against turnovr ach yar, as this is a good indicator of changs to activity lvls on campus. This mtric shows that th fficincy of th organisation has incrasd markdly sinc 1990 from 235tCO 2 / 1m to 88tCO 2 / 1m in 2014/15 and continus to incras yar on yar (shown in th figur blow) 1. Salix Fund Th Univrsity has participatd in th SALIX fund which is usd to implmnt nrgy saving projcts that will pay back within fiv yars. Th savings ar put back into th fund as thy accru to b usd again on furthr nrgy and carbon rduction initiativs. Rcntly w hav usd th funds to upgrad th Horwood Enrgy Cntr which incorporatd a complt rfurbishmnt of th hating and hot watr gnration quipmnt. This includd a CHP (Combind Hat & Powr gnrator - picturd abov right) which is an ngin usd to crat lctricity but which also utiliss th hat which would othrwis hav bn wast to provid hating and hot watr. This unit dlivrs not only financial bnfits but also rsults in lowr carbon missions as much lss nrgy is lost in th procss of crating lctricity in comparison to larg convntional powr stations. HEFCE Rvolving Grn Fund 3 Th Univrsity has also participatd in th HEFCE Rvolving Grn Fund. As on xampl, in 2013 w rcivd 340k to rfurbish th library (with its 24h opning policy as rqustd by studnts) with low nrgy lighting. This is vry similar to th Salix schm in trms of how it is run and th ruls which ar applid for payback and tchnologis. Th Library lighting rfurbishmnt was compltd in Sptmbr 2014 and includd prsnc dtction controls rathr than manual switching. This, along with mor fficint luminairs giving bttr light output, gratly improvd th lighting within th building whilst also rducing th lctricity consumption considrably. Carbon Rduction Commitmnt (CRC) Th Univrsity is rquird to participat in th Carbon Rduction Commitmnt (CRC), a national schm which rquirs larg organisations in th UK to masur and monitor thir carbon missions. This schm was initially dsignd as a carbon trading procss that ncouragd nrgy fficincy and rduction, with rpaymnts associatd with lagu tabl prformanc. Th Univrsity achivd its arly targts: Automatd Mtr Rading (AMR) on all primary mtrs and a rcognisd nrgy fficincy accrditation, for Kl th Carbon Trust Standard (rquiring yaron-yar rduction in carbon missions). Rnwal of th Carbon Trust Standard was achivd in 2011, with th Univrsity achiving good assssmnt marks (90% in all catgoris). Howvr, th govrnmnt thn withdrw th rpaymnt lmnt of th CRC schm. Th CRC schm now functions as a tax on th amount of carbon that organisations mit, with paymnts basd on a pric agrd by th govrnmnt annually. Th schm is now in its scond phas whrby organisations can purchas allowancs in advanc at a discount to incntivis forcasting and trading btwn participants whr appropriat. CRC rsults Rportabl Carbon Emissions 2012/ / /15 12,690 tco 2 12,919 tco 2 13,411 tco 2 Crdit Cost 152, , ,212 Th ruls for idntifying and rporting missions in th CRC ar diffrnt from thos usd for th Univrsity carbon footprint thrfor thr ar disparitis btwn ths figurs and thos within th carbon footprint. Gnrally rportabl missions hav bn incrasing du to incrasd commrcial activitis and th rporting of domstic missions. Th total carbon crdit costs hav incrasd significantly as th National Govrnmnt incrasd th cost of ach crdit from 12 in phas 1 (yars 2011/12 to 2013/14) to a minimum of in th first yar of phas 2 (2014/15). Th cost of crdits is now rising ach yar to furthr incntivis organisations to bcom mor fficint. Ky Dvlopmnts Display Enrgy Crtificats (DEC) Th Univrsity is rquird to comply with th Display of Enrgy Crtificats (DECs) and Enrgy Prformanc Crtificats (EPCs) rquirmnts undr th Europan Enrgy Prformanc of Buildings Dirctiv (EBPD). Th main critrion that affcts Kl Univrsity to dat is th rquirmnt to display DECs in buildings ovr 500 m 2 to which th public hav accss. For accommodation buildings, four ar B ratd and four ar C ratd; for acadmic and cntral srvics buildings, only on of ths (th nwst Claus Mosr building) is A ratd (th highst rating), with most bing C or D. This mans that thr ar obviously opportunitis for improving th nrgy fficincy of most of our buildings although rtro-fitting of nrgy-saving faturs can b vry costly. In 2015 a furthr dirctiv was introducd that rducs th minimum ara to 250m 2 for which rports ar rquird, so a significant numbr of our othr buildings will rquir a DEC. Automatd Mtring of Elctricity Th Univrsity is abl to monitor, through its own installd automatd mtring systm, th lctricity, gas and watr consumption within virtually all buildings on campus. This allows for th dtaild monitoring of th buildings us, which is usd to crat monthly and annual consumption graphs to targt improvmnts. Solar PV In 2013 th univrsity compltd a full fasibility study across campus for th installation of solar photovoltaic arrays. Th Univrsity committd 300k to this projct, and installd thr 50KWp systms in March and April of Ths arrays ar working wll providing circa 120,000 kwh of fr lctricity pr yar, saving around 67 tonns of CO 2 pr yar and providing a cost saving of circa 15k from th gnration of our own lctricity in addition to 15k from Fd-in- Tariff paymnts pr yar. In 2014/15 ths arrays producd 124,552kWh of lctricity providing just ovr 1% of th total campus sit lctricity annually. ISO and Enrgy Managmnt Kl Univrsity dcidd in 2012 to obtain an accrditation for Enrgy Managmnt by mbarking on th implmntation of an Enrgy Managmnt Systm (EMS) and subsquntly applid to b crtifid to th intrnationallyrcognisd standard, ISO 50001:2011. In Sptmbr 2013 aftr having th Enrgy Managmnt Systm auditd by an accrditd assssor Kl was crtifid to mt th rquirmnts of th standard. Th crtification lasts for thr yars during which tim th assssor rvisits priodically to nsur complianc of th standard is maintaind and to highlight any aras for improvmnt. Th EMS currntly covrs a combination of acadmic buildings, classrooms, lctur thatrs, rstaurants/cafs, taching labs, kitchns and th stats activitis for th acadmic buildings and ncompasss th work nvironmnts of approximatly 2,000 staff and 10,000 studnts. Kl was on of th first univrsitis in th UK to hav its Enrgy Managmnt Systm crtifid to this prstigious quality standard and having implmntd th systm it will assist in achiving continual improvmnt in th managmnt of nrgy usd across campus. Estats and Dvlopmnt has bn committd to a rnwabl/sustainabl nrgy stratgy ovr many yars. Th Univrsity was first awardd accrditation of th Enrgy Efficincy Accrditation Schm in 1999, with rnwals in 2003, 2006 and 2008, and was on of th first UK univrsitis to achiv th Carbon Trust Standard in 2008, with rnwal achivd in Additionally rsults from last yar s figurs for th national Estat Managmnt Statistics indicatd Kl is fifth of all UK univrsitis for valu for mony nrgy procurmnt

12 Bhaviour Chang Campaigns W hav circa 3,000 studnts living on campus within th Halls of Rsidnc which has a significant impact on nrgy and watr us. In partnrship with th NUS, w launchd th Studnt Switch-off schm at Kl which aims to ncourag studnts to think about nrgy consumption in thir Halls of Rsidnc. Studnt ambassadors hav bn rcruitd to champion this schm and to ncourag thir fllow studnts to sign up to th projct. Hall Points ar awardd for th Hall that signs up th gratst numbr of studnts to th schm. Throughout th yar thr ar also rgular comptitions and vnts that hav a spcific Grn thm and which nabl furthr Hall Points. A campaign is also run to ncourag staff to adopt working practics which minimis nrgy consumption. Th Grn Impact schm is administrd by th National Union of Studnts and is dtaild furthr in sction 10. Futur Dvlopmnts Th Estats & Dvlopmnt Dirctorat rgularly undrtak nrgy and watr audits of all buildings on campus to idntify aras of infficincy and opportunitis to rduc consumption. Th rsults of ths audits inform a mastr projct list which contains all potntial initiativs, allowing thos that rprsnt th bst conomic and carbon valu to b brought forward as funding bcoms availabl. From that list, ovr th last acadmic yar w hav implmntd svral projcts as shown in th tabl at th bottom of th pag. Going forward, mor than 80 nrgy and watr saving projcts hav bn idntifid to b considrd as and whn funding bcoms availabl. Amongst ths initiativs th following hav bn idntifid which dmonstrat both a significant financial and carbon bnfit and ar currntly at th fasibility stag: 1. SMART ENERGY NETWORK DEMONSTRATOR (SEND) As vidncd in th contnts of this rport, sustainability is a priority at Kl Univrsity. By taking action now, th Univrsity aims to bcom mor nrgy slf-sufficint with incrasd carbon saving, whilst also bcoming a national rsarch and dvlopmnt facility that is undrtaking world-lading rsarch in nvironmntal sustainability. In ordr to achiv this, th Univrsity plans to work with graduats, acadmics and businsss to crat a smart nrgy ntwork dmonstrator - a living laboratory whr nw nrgy-fficint tchnologis can b rsarchd, dvlopd and tstd in a ral world nvironmnt. Enabld by commitmnt from th Dpartmnt of Businss, Innovation and Skills and th Dpartmnt of Enrgy and Climat Chang as part of th Stok-on-Trnt & Staffordshir City Dal signd by Govrnmnt at Kl Univrsity in 2014, Kl is dsigning th first at scal smart nrgy ntwork dmonstrator in Europ. This Govrnmnt invstmnt, alongsid targtd co-invstmnt from th Europan Rgional Dvlopmnt Fund, th Univrsity and th privat sctor, will dlivr a worldclass dmonstrator facility for smart nrgy ntwork rsarch and dvlopmnt, nabling collaboration with businss and industry, and th tsting and valuation of nw and volving smart nrgy ntwork tchnologis and srvics. This rprsnts a significant invstmnt ovr th nxt fiv yars. Th dmonstrator will build on th Univrsity s privatly-ownd and managd smart nrgy ntwork infrastructur, optimis nrgy distribution and improv th managmnt of a rang of building-basd and campus-wid onsit rnwabl or lowr carbon nrgy sourcs, such as wind, solar and gothrmal. Th dmonstrator will us a wid rang of rnwabl and lowr carbon nrgy sourcs in ordr to mt th ntwork s nrgy nds and allow th nrgy to b transfrrd across th ntwork accordingly. 13 8. WASTE AND RECYCLING Wast managmnt within th Univrsity has a ky rol to play in mting th Univrsity s sustainability objctivs, through minimising wast gnratd, maximising th potntial of matrials through rus, rcycling and nrgy rcovry, and rducing grnhous gas missions by divrting wast from landfill. Th Univrsity s wast managmnt stratgy follows th wast hirarchy. Biffa Wast Srvics Ltd wr r-appointd as our wast contractor during 2014 following a comptitiv tndring xrcis. Thy ar rsponsibl for th rgular collction of th majority of wast gnratd on a day-to-day basis.
