Gies Award Congratulations, Joan Welsh-Grabin! Associate Dean for Student Affairs Cathy Solow to Receive the Distinguished Achievement Award Cathy Solow, associate dean for student affairs, will be honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award during a public reception and awards program that will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2012, in the Iowa Memorial Union s 2nd floor ballroom. Ms. Solow and Dr. Linda Kerber, UI History, were chosen from the list of nominees by the Committee on the Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women. The award is given to a staff and faculty member who have distinguished themselves and the University through their accomplishments. The award is given for an outstanding achievement or a lifetime record of service within the University community in a professional or service capacity. Their contributions demonstrate significant impact through attributes such as leadership, innovation, and/or subject matter expertise; awardees are considered role models for woman and/or girls. Dr. Isabelle Denry Attends INSA Ceramics Workshop and Gives Invited Presentation Dr. Isabelle Denry, Dows and Department of Prosthodontics, participated in a workshop on ceramics at the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA), which is one of the highest ranked engineering schools in France. Dr. Denry also gave an invited presentation entitled All-Ceramic Restorations: How Does Processing Affect Clinical Performance? Dr. Satheesh Elangovan & Collaborators Win AO Grant ADEA/AADR Meeting Photos Kinderfarm Preschool Presentation by D2s Delta Sigma Delta Hosts Social & Fundraiser 9 Recent Publications Filling Station Announcement & Menu New AAPD Text 10 Dr. Tad Mabry Presentation; Celebration (Women); River Run Training Program; Making the Connection; UI History of Medicine Society Dr. Laurie St-Pierre Receives the 2012 Carl Svare Dental and Graduate Student Research Award Dr. Laurie St-Pierre, a resident in the Department of Operative Dentistry, has received the 2012 Carl Svare Dental and Graduate Student Research Award for her work with biomaterials. The award was established by Dr. Svare s widow, Ms. Marlys Svare, and her family to honor her husband and his legacy. Dr. Svare died suddenly in 1986 at the age of 52. Dr. Svare was member of the Department of Prosthodontics and the Dows Institute. His internationally recognized expertise provided a better understanding of dental restorative materials. Dr. St-Pierre s Local AADR Research Day presentation, Effect of Finishing and Polishing Direction on the Marginal Adaptation of Resin-Based Composite Restorations in Vitro also won first place in the Graduate Dental Specialty Award in Operative Dentistry. Dr. Cathia Bergeron, formerly Department of Operative Dentistry, is Dr. St -Pierre s mentor.

2 Page 2 Dr. Steven Fletcher Assumes the OMS Graduate Program Directorship Dr. Steven Fletcher, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, will assume the graduate program directorship, effective March 26, As the graduate program director, he will oversee the training and development of twelve Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department residents. UI Pediatric Dental Club Hosts 2012 Give Kids a Smile Event The University of Iowa Pediatric Dental Club hosted this year s second Give Kids A Smile event in February The event was held in conjunction with the Iowa Children s Museum at the Coral Ridge Mall on a Family Free Night that was sponsored by Rockwell Collins. Each Family Free Night has a specific topic that helps kids learn through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); the topic of the night was gum disease. The children who attended the event were allowed to design their own flossing apparatus, which they could test on large Legos to simulate food being stuck between teeth. Children also participated in a hands-on demonstration to show how brushing only removes plaque from portions of the tooth that are accessible to a toothbrush and that flossing is needed to cleanse between teeth. The winners from the past event s toothbrush design contest were also announced. Three Sonicare Kids Electric Toothbrushes were donated by Phillips Sonicare as prizes. The contest winners are listed below. The Pediatric Dental Club would like to thank Phillips Sonicare and their representative, Stacy Borgwardt, for their willingness to participate and for their generous donation. The museum again provided the activity room on the second floor for dental students to give dental screenings and apply fluoride varnish. The screenings were supervised by Dr. Treagan White, Pediatric Dentistry resident, and Dr. Matthew Geneser, Pediatric Dentistry. Students provided dental screenings for children and instructed parents on oral hygiene. Parents were given information about seeking follow-up care if dental problems were found. Dental students screened a total of 51 children for a combined total of 170 during the two events. The varnish applied at the events was donated by 3M ESPE; the Pediatric Dental Club would like to thank Mrs. Carla Stallman. The Pediatric Dental Club would also like to thank the National Children s Oral Health Foundation, Oral B, Colgate, and Johnson & Johnson for their generous contributions. Each child was able to leave the event with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss. (Submitted by Jarod Johnson, D3)

3 Page 3 Dr. Esther M. Wilkins Receives 2012 Gies Award for Achievement as a Dental Educator (Left) Dr. Esther M. Wilkins, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, received the 2012 William J. Gies Award for Achievement as a Dental Educator at the ADEA annual session in Orlando, FL. She is shown here with Dr. E. Rouse, ADEA president, and Dr. Georgia Johnson (Periodontics). Dr. Wilkins received her dental hygiene certificate from Forsyth in 1939 and completed her dental degree and periodontics program at Tufts. She wrote the first comprehensive textbook on dental hygiene, an enduring book now in its 11 th edition and still considered the foremost dental hygiene text. Her enthusiasm and her lifetime contributions to mentorship and education have made her a shining star in dental education. She continues to teach preventive dentistry at Tufts and presents at continuing education courses, of which she has done more than 800! Dr. Straub-Morarend Receives the American Dental Education Association s Prestigious 2012 Olav Alvares Award for Outstanding Articles Published in JDE (Left): Dr. Cheryl Straub-Morarend, Department of Family Dentistry, received the American Dental Education Association s prestigious 2012 Olav Alvares Award for Outstanding Articles Published in the Journal of Dental Education. Dr. Alvares (left), who presented her with the award during the opening ceremony of the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, served 19 years as editor-in-chief of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine, which was published by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). He also served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dental Education from 2000 through During this time, he was a strong advocate for publishing articles by junior faculty and students. His mentoring of young dental educators and professionals resulted in the creation of the award, which is presented every year during the annual ADEA meeting to those who publish outstanding work. Dr. Straub-Morarend won the award this year for her article, Informational Resources Utilized in Clinical Decision Making: Common Practice in Dentistry, which was published in the April 2011 issue of Journal of Dental Education. Co-authors for the article were Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community Dentistry; Dr. Michael Finkelstein, Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine; and Dr. David Holmes, head of Family Dentistry.

4 Page 4 Congratulations Joan Welsh-Grabin! Joan has been elected by her peers to represent the College of Dentistry in the UI Staff Council. Joan begins her three-year term effective April 1. Dr. Satheesh Elangovan and Collaborators Awarded 2012 Osseointegration Foundation Clinical Research Grant The Academy of Osseointegration has awarded Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Periodontics, and his collaborators the 2012 Osseointegration Foundation Clinical Research Grant ($25,000), for a one-year project, The Effect of Obesity on Peri-implant Health: a Cross-sectional Study. Recent research has shown that obese individuals express higher levels of inflammatory mediators in gingival fluid and may be at greater risk for periodontitis. Individuals with a history of periodontitis are also at risk for peri-implantitis; this study will provide insights into the effect of obesity on peri-implant health. Coinvestigators for this project include Drs. Gustavo Avila Ortiz, Periodontics; Kim Brogden, Dows and Periodontics; and Dr. Deborah Dawson, director, Biostatistics Unit. Drs. Clark Stanford, associate dean for research; Dr. William Haynes, UI Internal Medicine; and Dr. Georgia Johnson, head of Periodontics, are consultants. 8 Page 8 Second-Year Dental Students Give Presentation at Kinderfarm Preschool On Friday, February 24, 2012, nine second-year dental students gave a pediatric dental presentation at Kinderfarm Preschool in Iowa City. Thirty preschoolers had an opportunity to learn what foods are good and bad for your teeth, see what a dentist wears and why, learn about tooth-brushing techniques, hear a story, and brush a puppet s teeth. The Pediatric Dental Club donated 30 toothbrushes and toothpaste to the students, and they were also given a weekly tooth-brushing calendar and a brochure for parents to read about dental health. Most of the students, when asked, reported having been to the dentist before, and all of the students were very enthusiastic about the presentation! 9 Page 9 Delta Sigma Delta Holds Annual Social and Sponsors Fundraiser for 2011 Fund Delta Sigma Delta members recently attended their annual social. The event was held March 3, 2012, at Orchard Green Restaurant in Iowa City. The event gave members an opportunity to socialize about dental school and catch up on personal events in each other s lives. It also provided an opportunity for upper classmates to answer questions and provide advice to younger dental students. The fraternity looks forward to hosting a meal at the Ronald McDonald House and cleaning its adopted portion of a local highway. Delta Sigma Delta is also sponsoring a fundraiser for the 2011 Fund, which helps students with patients who are unable to pay for their complete treatment. The fraternity has encouraged a $5.00 donation to the fund for those who have chosen to predict the outcome of March Madness. Currently the standings for the top five are below. 11 Page 11 College of Dentistry faculty are invited to attend The ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching & Learning (ITL) Program for Dental School Faculty Presented by Dr. Tad Mabry Department of Pediatric Dentistry Thursday, April 5, 2012 Noon Galagan Auditorium B Sponsored by the Dentistry Curriculum Committee Dr. Mabry will share his experiences as a Scholar at the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL), an intensive faculty-development program. The program is sponsored by ADEA s Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL). The program goal is to help recruit and retain dental faculty by preparing participants to become more effective teachers and develop other skills that will facilitate confidence, job satisfaction, and professional growth in the academic environment. The two-phase program at UMKC and UNC enables Scholars to attain a higher level of excellence in evidence-based clinical and didactic modalities of dental education. The Scholars receive hands-on experience with key teacher tasks such as evaluating student competence, presenting lectures, planning courses, constructing tests, facilitating small-group learning, working with difficult students, guiding students with questions, and providing feedback. Scholars also explore cognitive theories, learn strategies to enhance motivation, review research on educational best practices, explore student learning styles, analyze the characteristics of today s Gen Y learner, and complete teaching self-assessments. Additionally, the program offers a focused examination of Scholars career development plans and concludes with extensive lessons on leading effective meetings and chairing academic committees.
