May 19-23, 2008 June 16-20, 2008 Now in its 36th year, the flagship CME course from UCSF's Department of reviews the most recent developments and current controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particular emphasis will be placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicing physician. The course will include: Didactic Lectures and Literature Reviews Clinically active faculty from the Department of will emphasize recent clinical advances. Clinical Dilemmas In addition to case presentations to illustrate current management strategies, a special session on clinical problem solving will be included. Audience Participation Ample time will be provided for specific questions and discussions of problems commonly encountered by course participants. In addition, an electronic Audience Response System will allow audience members to respond to clinical questions and dilemmas posed by speakers. Internal Topics Areas to be covered include cardiology, hematology and oncology, general internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, nephrology, and rheumatology, and HIV/AIDS. Multidisciplinary Topics Additional topics of interest to the practicing internist will include issues in women s health, geriatrics, neurology, sports medicine, dermatology, and preoperative evaluation of the surgical patient. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course should be able to discuss: Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of commonly encountered medical problems such as atrial fibrillation, lipid disorders, dementia, diabetes, hypertension, depression, preoperative medical evaluation, HIV infection, stroke and TIA, asthma, sleep apnea, respiratory tract infections, chronic kidney disease, hepatitis and cirrhosis, and breast cancer; Appropriate use of diagnostic tests for evaluating cardiac risk, cognitive dysfunction, breast cancer risk, perioperative cardiac risk, interstitial lung disease, unexplained rheumatologic and gastrointestinal symptoms; New developments in the medical literature with clinical impact on ambulatory medicine, hospital medicine, women's health, infectious diseases, HIV, immunizations for adults, breast, lung, and gastrointestinal cancer; The appropriate use of subspecialty consultation by the primary care practitioner.
