2 34TH ANNUAL Advances in Now in its 34th year, this course reviews the most recent developments and current controversies in the field of internal medicine. Particular emphasis will be placed on topics of clinical relevance to the practicing physician. The course will include: Didactic Lectures: Clinically active faculty from the Department of Medicine will emphasize recent clinical advances. Year-in-Review Literature Reviews: Faculty will review major articles from the general medical specialty literature with immediate importance to clinical practice. Clinical Dilemmas: In addition to case presentations to illustrate current management strategies, a special session on clinical problem solving will be included. Questions and Answers: Ample time will be provided for specific questions and discussions of problems commonly encountered by course participants. Topics: Areas to be covered include cardiology, hematology and oncology, general internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, occupational and environmental medicine, endocrinology, nephrology, rheumatology, and AIDS. Multidisciplinary Topics: Additional topics of interest to the practicing internist will include issues in women s health, geriatrics, neurology, dermatology, and preoperative evaluation of the surgical patient. Advances in is presented by the Department of Medicine and is sponsored by Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University of California, School of Medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course should be able to discuss: Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of commonly encountered medical problems such as congestive heart failure, urinary incontinence, kidney disease, menopause, hyperparathyroidism, diabetes, polyneuropothy, infectious disease, inflammatory bowel disease, viral hepatitis, osteoarthritis, asthma, HIV, and common dermatologic syndromes; Appropriate use of diagnostic tests for evaluating coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, rheumatologic diseases, viral hepatitis, HIV disease, athletics and the heart, disease predisposition, cardiovascular disease, GERD and Barrett s esophagus, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, cancer, and high risk medicine; Case-based management strategies for congestive heart failure, chronic back pain, common office gynecology problems, common infectious disease problems, and HIV disease; New developments in the medical literature with clinical impact in geriatrics, nephrology, infectious diseases, appropriate use of antimicrobial agents, rheumatology, endocrinology and occupational medicine; The appropriate use of subspecialty consultation by the primary care practitioner.
