Th National Committ for Subspcialty Training Programms, undr th authority of th Malaysian Mdical Council (MMC), is to consist of rprsntativs from th MoH, th Acadmy of Mdicin of Malaysia (AMM), th Univrsitis and th privat sctor. Th subspcialty training programms will b administrd by th rspctiv subspcialty training committs. Th National Committ is xpctd to nhanc th organisation and coordination of training programms. Th stting up of a National Committ to coordinat subspcialty training programms is most wlcom as it givs th spcialty bodis an opportunity to play a lad rol in dtrmining th training rquirmnts and comptncis xpctd for indpndnt practic in thir rspctiv spcialtis. Th ida for National Committ for subspcialty training programms is not nw; at a joint mting of th AMM, th MoH and th Univrsitis hld at Grand Sasons Hotl in Klantan on 9th March 2002, th mting adoptd th following rsolutions which ar rlvant to this day. 1. Malaysia is a small country with limitd rsourcs. For training to b ffctiv it must maximiz th availabl rsourcs Th subspcialty training is a collaborativ ffort by th MoH, th Univrsitis and th AMM. Training must utiliz th xprtis and training facilitis availabl in th privat hospitals and privat univrsitis 2. Avoid lngthy dlays bfor ntry into postgraduat 1 AKADEMI training systm. Early ntry into postgraduat training-on yar aftr housmanship Part of th initial postgraduat training is conductd in th MoH Hospitals/Cntrs so that MoH will not los th srvics of MOs 3 yar compulsory srvic can b don whilst th MO is undrgoing training 3. Excssiv spcialization can hav a dltrious ffct on th Halth Car Systm Spcialty bodis idntify th spcialtis and subspcialtis that nd to b dvlopd. That Gnral Mdicin and Gnral Surgical Training b r-valuatd and b rcognizd as an individual spcialty Unlik th spcialty training programm (Mastrs Programm) which is univrsity basd and govrnd by th National Conjoint Board for Postgraduat Mdical Education, th subspcialty training programm is largly a MoH Programm. Th subspcialty (Fllowship) training has progrssivly volvd ovr th yars in th MoH Hospitals. Th Fllowship training is basd on apprnticship; th trains undrgo suprvisd training undr a consultant for two or thr yars locally with an option for xposur in an ovrsas cntr for a yar. Th MoH conducts training in a numbr of subspcialty filds, and although ovr th yars th programm has bcom mor formalisd thr is still a lack of clarity with rgards to govrnanc. Th Mdical (Amndmnt) Act 2012 will hav a significant impact in rgulatory framwork on postgraduat mdical ducation and training. Undr th amndd Mdical Act, mdical practitionrs intnding to practis as spcialists must b rgistrd with th National Spcialist Rgistr (NSR). Th NSR allows doctors to indicat subspcialty as a fild of practic along with th main spcialty. Th NSR assists th public and mdical practitionrs to find appropriat mdical continud on pag 2

2 continud from pag 1 xprtis for consultation and rfrral. Th NSR will nsur doctors dsignatd as spcialists ar appropriatly traind and comptnt to practic with th xpctd lvl of car in th spcialty. Th nw rgulations ar bing put in plac to nsur our patints rciv saf car of th highst quality. With th amndd Mdical Act, th nd point of spcialist training will b to acquir crdntials for rgistration in th NSR. W nd to nsur our postgraduat training is fficint and ffctiv. Subspcialty training should no longr b in th xclusiv domain of th MoH; th rsourcs availabl in univrsitis and th privat sctor must b optimally utilizd. Th stablishmnt of a national body to ovrs th govrnanc of subspcialty training will allow bttr coordination btwn MoH, th Univrsitis, th AMM and th privat sctor. Th nw systm can crat mor training opportunitis and allow trains to rciv xposur in diffrnt sttings, and diffrnt managmnt approachs. Training sits must provid sufficint clinical xposur supportd by appropriat facilitis. For this to happn, w nd to stablish a propr accrditation and crdntialing mchanism. Th spcialty bodis of th AMM in consultation with th MoH, th Univrsitis and th privat sctor must dvlop formal, structurd and quality assurd training programms that will lad to crdntialing in thir rspctiv spcialtis. Training should b limitd to placs that provid high quality training and suprvision whch ar approvd and quality assurd by th rgulating bodis. Ntworking and collaboration with stablishd institutions ovrsas should b ncouragd to support th training programms. Th challng in spcialist ducation is not only to dlivr at th nd of th training programms but throughout th liflong larning procss. In an nvironmnt of rapidly changing scintific knowldg and incrasing sophistication of halthcar dlivry systm, doctors can no longr b considrd as traind for lif upon compltion of a training programm. It is important for us to rcogniz that subspcialty training is part of th continuum of larning in Mdicin. Th amndd Mdical Act 2012 rquirs mdical practitionrs to acquir compulsory CPD points for th rnwal of th Annual Practicing Crtificat (APC) and rvalidation of spcialist rgistration. Mdical practitionrs ar xpctd to tak rsponsibility for th maintnanc of liflong profssional comptncy. Th modrn doctor must rcognis that continuing profssional dvlopmnt is a continuanc of th spcialist training and ducation. W mad significant collctiv rsolutions rgarding subspcialty training in 2002; th dsir to achiv xcllnc in postgraduat training rmains. W must mak a concrtd ffort to formaliz subspcialty training. It was also indd an honour to rciv th Education and Rsarch Fund awardd by HKCR, Hong Kong Acadmy of Mdicin. Th Hong Kong Collg of Radiologists 22 nd Annual Scintific Mting 2014 was hld at th Hong Kong Acadmy of Mdicin Jocky Club Building at Abrdn, Hong Kong. Thr wr thr main tracts comprising Gnral Radiology, Oncology and Nuclar Mdicin; which includd gnral lcturs, oral scintific proffrd paprs and -postr prsntations. Th participants and invitd faculty wr from multinational countris including Australia, India, Unitd Kingdom and th U.S.A. Lcturr at UPM, Dr Hasyma Abu Hassan and two of our mdical studnts L Roy-Ming Chow and Nur Sharmin Sazali, was titld Contrast-Enhancd Computd Tomography for th Quantification of Non Alcoholic Fatty Livr Disas in Patints with Mtabolic Syndrom. It was indd a grat plasur to b invitd to attnd th jointly organisd HKCR and th UK Royal Collg of Radiologists Dinnr of th Collgs during this mt. An xciting lion danc prformanc and vocal prformanc by local mmbr radiologists including an inspiring piano and opra prformanc wr crtainly mmorabl highlights of th vnt. Apart from attnding th confrnc, I took th opportunity to visit Disnyland Hong Kong that is a major attraction not to b missd. I watchd th parad of th Disny charactrs that cam down Main Strt USA, took photos with Minni Mous, visitd th attractions thr and shoppd at th msmrizing mrchandiz shops. In short, th trip to Hong Kong was an xciting, fruitful and mmorabl on. I will crtainly ncourag my fllow Malaysian radiologists to attnd futur HKCR annual scintific mtings and participat in th many priz catgoris awardd including oral sssions, original manuscript and -postr prsntation catgoris. 4 Obituary on Dato Dr Khoo Kah Lin DIMP, AMN, MD (Singapor), MBBS (Singapor), FRCP (Lond), FRCP (Edin), FRCP (Glasg), FRCP (Ir), FACC, FCCP, FESC, FAMM, FASc 18 th Dcmbr 1938 to 7 th Novmbr 2014 by Profssor Dato Dr Mrs S T Kw Dato Dr Khoo Kah Lin was born on 18 th Dcmbr 1938 in Pnang, th ldst of thr childrn of Mr & Mrs Khoo Tng Kat. H grw up in Pnang, compltd his schooling in St Xavir s Institution, and wnt on to th Univrsity of Singapor to rad Mdicin. Upon graduation, h was postd to Hospital Alor Star as hous-officr, and latr as mdical officr. Dato Dr Khoo was appointd as Rgistrar in Hospital Kuala Lumpur undr Tan Sri Dr R P Pillay in H wnt on to th Unitd Kingdom to train as a Physician, obtaind his Mmbrship of th Royal Collg of Physicians (MRCP) in 1970, and subsquntly spnt a stint in Blfast to study mobil coronary car undr Prof Dr Frank Pantridg. Upon his rturn to th country, h was instrumntal in starting th first Coronary Car Unit in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Dato Dr Khoo s intrst and fascination with Familial Hyprcholstrolamia (FH) startd whn h was in Hospital Kuala Lumpur. This took him through a lif-long journy of cas finding, rsarch, ducation both for th halth car profssionals and for th public. Bcaus of his passion and intrst for FH, w larn about this gntic disordr, its rcognition and th appropriat managmnt. In rcognising his trmndous contributions, h was bstowd th Gold Mdal Award for Rsarch from th Rotary Club of Malaysia, as wll as th Gold Mdal Award and Outstanding Srvics Award from th Malaysian Mdical Association. H was confrrd Darjah Indra Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) which carris th titl Dato by KDYMM Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang in I cam to know Dato Dr Khoo in 1973/74 whn I joind th Dpartmnt of Mdicin in Hospital Kuala Lumpur as rgistrar undr Tan Sri Dr R P Pillay. H was at that tim th spcialist physician and cardiologist. Bsids bing an astut clinician, h spnt a lot of tim and ffort in training th youngr doctors and nurss on lipids and cardiology. I still rmmbr th rgular stram of patints coming for blood tsts to monitor thir lipid lvl. Dato Dr Khoo not only sourcd for patints in th Klang Vally, h got his patints also by rfrral of collagus from all ovr th country, and vn from nighbouring country i.. Indonsia. Aftr h lft th govrnmnt srvic, h continud his Cholstrol Journy as a Cardiologist in privat practic. This ld him to vntually obtain his Doctor of Mdicin (MD) basd on his work on Familial Hyprcholstrolamia from th National Univrsity of Singapor in Bsids th passion for FH, Dato Dr Khoo also had a passion to srv th profssion. H srvd as Dirctor of th Hart Foundation of Malaysia sinc Whn h launchd his book My Cholstrol Journy in Malaysia, h mad a sizabl donation of RM75,000 to th Hart Foundation of Malaysia. In turn, th Hart Foundation donatd th funds to Sau Sng Lum Foundation, a non-profit organization, for its H.E.L.P (Hparin-Inducd Extracorporal Low-Dnsity Lipoprotin Prcipitation) Dialysis Programm. Dato Dr Khoo srvd as th Prsidnt of th Malaysian Mdical Association from 2007 to H also srvd as council mmbr of th Acadmy of Mdicin Malaysia from 2003 to In 2013, h was lctd as Mastr of th Acadmy of Mdicin. Dato Dr Khoo also mad a prsonal donation of RM100,000 to th Building Fund of th AMM in In his own words, at th launch of his book, that I fl so blssd that th drams that I dard to dram at th start of my cholstrol journy cam tru, It was not just th cholstrol journy dram that had com tru for Dato Khoo, also his dram of srving th mdical profssion in th Hart Foundation, in th MMA and in th AMM had all com tru as wll. Dato Dr Khoo is survivd by his wif Datin Dr Liw Yin Mi, and thir childrn, Khoo Lay Sng and Khoo Po Ai. 5 Inaugural Intrnational Pathology Day 5 th Novmbr 2014 Th ida of having an Intrnational Pathology Day was first mootd about 2 yars ago during th annual mting of th Intrnational Liaison of Pathology Prsidnts. Th ida was knly takn up by mmbr organisations and latr on th World Association of Pathology and Laboratory Mdicin (WASPaLM). Finally, 5 th Novmbr was proposd to b th day by th Royal Collg of Pathologists of th Unitd Kingdom and accptd by all th participating pathology organisations across th continnts. Th ida was announcd on a spcial wbsit as wll as th rspctiv wbsit of th rspctiv pathology organisation. Th Collg of Pathologists, Acadmy of Mdicin of Malaysia, too clbratd th inaugural Intrnational Pathology Day on Wdnsday 5 th Novmbr A Clinical Cytomtry Symposium supportd by Bckman-Coultr was organisd and rprsntativ pathologists from various stats wr invitd to attnd th Symposium as wll as clbrat th occasion. Th cytomtr thn was monstrous in siz as it was watr-coold and occupid a whol room. Th first air-coold, small foot-print, flow cytomtr was acquird by a UKM rsarch group fundd through an IRPA grant in This singl-colour flow cytomtr was vry robust and srvd th rsarch group for mor than 20 yars. According to Prof S K Chong who mootd th ida to acquir this instrumnt, it was particular popular among rsarch studnts and young pathologists who first larnt about flow cytomtry. This cytomtr was finally rtird a fw yars ago as thy could no longr abl to find an nginr for maintnanc support. This cytomtr is now a musum pic savd from th scrap yard and placd in a cornr in th Stm Cll Transplant Laboratory of Hospital UKM. Th cours consistd of a day of talks and intractiv sssions, ld by Dr Ming Kng Toh, Had of Mdical Srvics Asia, MPS, dsignd to quip xprincd doctors with th knowldg ndd to act a mdical xprt. Th practical and thical considrations of bing a mdical xprt wr xplord and discussd, as wll as th widr contxt of th principls of mdical nglignc and th Malaysian lgal landscap. Exprt lawyr spakrs Raja Eiln Soraya, Sagadavn Thangavlu, and Slvamalar Alagaratnam, from MPS panl law firms Raja Darryl & Loh, Sharn Dlamor & Co and Skrin rspctivly, xpoundd upon th lgal aspcts with participation from collagus and dlgats alik, whil th xprt s prspctiv was covrd by Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Yahya, an O&G Consultant from Princ Court Mdical Cntr.
