Salad Club Established in OPRM March Hardin Library Workshops Attention: See pages 3-6 for additional Local Research Day photos and list of awardees Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz Receives 1st Place for Oral Presentation at Academy of Osseointegration Meeting Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz, Department of Periodontics, participated in the Oral Clinical Research Forum at the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) Annual Meeting, which was held in San Diego on February 19, His presentation, Efficacy of Socket Grafting for Alveolar Ridge Preservation: A Randomized Clinical Trial, was awarded first prize, Best Oral-Clinical Research Presentation. This large randomized clinical trial was completed at the College of Dentistry and was supported by a grant from Osteogenics Biomedical. Dr. Avila-Ortiz s collaborators included Drs. Mitch Gubler (2015 Periodontics certificate and MS in oral sciences), and currently in private practice in St. George (Utah); Chris Barwacz (Department of Family Dentistry); Miguel Romero-Bustillos (PhD student in oral sciences), Veeratrishul Allareddy (Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine); and Bridget Zimmerman (ICTS). Dr. Jennifer Hartshorn Becomes Fellow of Special Care Dentistry Dr. Jennifer Hartshorn, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, has successfully fulfilled all of the Special Care Dentistry Council on Fellowship requirements and has become a Fellow of Special Care Dentistry. The certificate officially stating her status will be presented to Dr. Hartshorn during the closing session of the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) Meeting, which will be held in Chicago on April Dr. Hartshorn is being recognized for her outstanding contributions to hospital dental practice, to special patient care, and for the recognition she has achieved among her colleagues in health care Local AADR Research Day News: Recap and Photos, Part 1 Dr. Aliasger Salem, keynote speaker The 2016 Local AADR Research Day was held February 16 at the College of Dentistry. Dean David Johnsen gave a welcome address before honoring Dr. Brad Amendt, associate dean for research, with the Dentistry Centennial Professor of Research. Dr. Veerasathpurush Allareddy, Department of Orthodontics and president of the Iowa Section of AADR, introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Aliasger Salem, professor and head, Division of Pharmaceutics and Translational Therapeutics, UI College of Pharmacy. He also has a secondary appointment at the College of Dentistry. Dr. Salem s presentation addressed his collaborations with several faculty at the dental college. Following his talk, there were oral and poster presentations. The awards banquet was held that evening at the Radisson in Coralville.

2 Page 2 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. Hong Chen The College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics and the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry welcome Dr. Hong Chen. Dr. Chen was born and raised in Liuzhou, China. She received a bachelor s degree in medicine concentrating on dentistry from the West China University of Medical Sciences in 1993, where she also completed a master s degree in medicine in dentistry in While at the University of Minnesota, Hong received a certificate in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and facial pain (2004), a master s degree in dentistry (2006), and a master s degree in health informatics (2009). In 2011, she completed a fellowship in the Clinical Research Scholars Program in Clinical & Translational Research at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Before joining the University of Iowa, she was a clinical assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry. Dr. Chen s clinical expertise is in the area of orofacial pain and TMD. As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Chen s research focuses on the impact of neural and hormonal regulations of stress on TMD and chronic pain. Dr. Chen is a fellow of the American Academy of Oral Pain, and is an active member of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Pain Society. She also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Research and Pain Medicine. Dr. Chen is married to Dr. Xi Chen, who is also a faculty member in Preventive & Community Dentistry. They have a young daughter named YiYi. In their spare time they enjoy cooking, fishing, hiking, and traveling. Drs. Ray Kuthy and Julie Reynolds Interviewed by KCRG Drs. Ray Kuthy and Julie Reynolds, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, were interviewed recently by KCRG about a UI Public Policy Center study on dentist workforce trends in Iowa. The UI Public Policy Center multi-year project is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) State Oral Health Workforce Program. The data have shown that the number of Iowa dentists older than 55 years has nearly doubled between 1997 and 2013, from 23 percent to 42 percent. Nearly half of these dentists are nearing retirement age. Dr. Kuthy anticipates there may be a scarcity of dentists in rural areas because of the steady decrease in the number of dentists practicing in rural communities, from 49 percent in 1997 to 36 percent in Thirty percent of Iowa s private practice dentists are found in Polk County (Des Moines area), Linn County (Cedar Rapids area), and Scott County (Quad Cities area). Dr. Reynolds noted that more group practices and services are located in metropolitan areas. There is also a trend towards group practice rather than single dentist practice; group practices are most generally found in urban settings. Forty Pre-Dental students attended. The program started at 12:30 p.m. with a welcome from Donte Nesbitt, president of Iowa s Pre-Dental Club, followed by an admissions overview by Rachael Kowbel, director of Dental Student Admissions, including building tours & impressions, courtesy of 19 generous current dental students. The day concluded with an ad for Iowa s Summer Academy (June 23-36) by Iowa American Student Dental Association (IASDA) president, Shaun O Neill (D3), and a wrap-up by Lizzie Axell (D2), Pre-Dental Club advisor. The attendees then met at the Airliner for supper. The visitors enjoyed the hands-on experience, presentations and interactions with current dental students. Thanks to the Student Affairs Office for hosting this experience and to the 19 dental students who volunteered!

Herwaldt, MD and Margaret Chorazy, MPH, PhD, both College of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology, will lead the discussion. The film will be shown Thursday, March 24, 6-8 p.m., at Hardin. Recognize Your Co-Worker The Ambassador Club Program recognizes a staff person who has shown a special commitment to promoting excellence in the teaching, research, patient care, or administrative functions of the College of Dentistry. One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. Nomination forms, program guidelines, and a listing of ambassadors are available on the IntraDent under Services > Dental Human Resources > Rewards & Recognition-COD. 9 Page 9 Jump Rope Competition Results Several students competed in the February 19 Outskip the Dean event (jump rope competition). Lucas won the Jump Rope Championship and an Amana ham. Taylor won the Alternating Jog Step Skills component, and Amanda won the One Foot Jump Skills component. They received certificates. 10 Page 10 Salad Club Established in OPRM: Successful? Lettuce Hope So! The Salad Club in Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine began because of a UI Live Well newsletter article about a daily salad club that was initiated by Wellness Ambassadors Deb Pfab and Laura Knosp at the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science. Kim Lake, Kaitlin Wenndt and Beth Burgess decided to create their own Salad Club for a week in OPRM as a method promoting easy, cheap and healthy meals for everyone in their department. They posted a sign-up sheet and sent out a departmental to invite participants. Says Beth, Many people brought items to share on Monday and more people trickled in throughout the week. I ve gotten great feedback about Salad Club from members of our department, and it has seemed to go so well that we are going to give it another shot next week! It has been fun to put on, and people really seem to appreciate the effort to promote healthy lunches as opposed to the usual cookies and donuts that we find in our break room.
