Instruction October 13 Noon Oral B Classroom Everyone is invited to attend 3 During the 2009 Alumni Weekend dinner on September 18, Dr. Jackson Roe and Mrs. Nona Seberg Roe received the Alumni of the Year Award, Dr. Michael Kanellis received the Dental Educator of the Year Award, and Dr. James A. Raecker received the Service Recognition Award. (Left) Dr. Jackson Roe (DDS '44) and Mrs. Nona Seberg Roe (BA 40) received the 2009 Alumni of the Year Award to honor their loyalty to the College of Dentistry. Their commitment to the College has included their support of the Simulation Clinic; the creation of the Jackson H. and Nona Seberg Roe Lectureship in Pediatric Dentistry; and the Jackson H. and Nona Seberg Roe Faculty Fellowship of the Special Care Clinic. The establishment of the Jackson H. and Nona Seberg Roe Professorship in Orthodontics also reflects their continuing loyalty to the College of Dentistry. (Left) Dr. Michael Kanellis (DDS '79), associate dean for patient care, was honored with the 2009 Dental Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Kanellis has made innumerable contributions to dental education and the pediatric oral health care of eastern Iowans and migrant workers. Working with Dr. Art Nowak, Pediatric Dentistry emeritus, and Dr. Steve Levy, Preventive & Community, he helped create a three-year combined pediatric dentistry/dental public health degree program, initiated several pediatric dentistry outreach activities. Working with Dr. Richard Burke, Pediatric Dentistry, he also helped establish the Muscatine Pediatric Dentistry Clinic in a collaborative effort between the College of Dentistry and the Muscatine Center for Social Action. His dedication to the implementation of electronic patient records and the transformation of the dental science building continues. (Left) Dr. James A. Raecker (DDS '59) distinguished himself during his professional careers in several ways: he was a member of the American Association of Dental Examiners (AADE) for nine years; served on the AADE's National Board Advisory Panel for seven years; served on the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) Steering Committee Board of Directors for three years; and served five years in the Iowa Dental Association (IDA) House of Delegates. He was also chairman of the IDA Insurance Council and chairman of the IDA Ethics, Intraprofessional & Public Relations Committee. To honor Dr. Raecker, his family established the James A. Raecker Service Award Fund, which supports one or more annual awards to deserving Iowa dental students who are involved with service to the community. 2 DSB Weekly Page 2 An Alumna Expresses Gratitude for Her Dental Education Dr. David Holmes, head of the Department of Family Dentistry, recently received this note from Dr. Erika Peddicord, a 2007 alumna from the College of Dentistry: I graduated in 07 from the U of I and my name at the time was Erika Barglof. I just wanted to drop you a note and ask if you could pass it on to Dr. Vince Williams. Dr. Williams worked very closely with me on multiple removable pros projects during my fourth year in Family Dentistry. I have done a few sets of dentures since being out of school but just a few weeks ago, I delivered a beautiful set of dentures to a frail old lady who had been hospitalized before coming to see me, due to malnutrition. She had been unable to eat because her old dentures did not fit well at all. She gave me a huge hug after she got her dentures and also a week later at her follow-up appointment, and she thanked me for making her such wonderful dentures. She said that she had already gained three pounds in one week because she was able to eat again! I m not sending you this to brag about myself but to thank Dr. Williams for all of the wonderful advice he gave me when I was in dental school. Without his help, I don t know that I could have done such a nice job for that patient! Not only did he help me become a more successful provider, he helped yet another patient in his long list of people whose lives have been drastically improved because of him! I thought I would give credit where credit is due and send an e- mail of gratitude. I m a VERY proud graduate of the University of Iowa. Sincerely, Erika Peddicord Successful 2009 Staff Retreat Approximately 200 collegiate staff attended the 2009 Staff Retreat, which was held at the College of Dentistry. Winners of the LaJames makeovers were Jo Ella Willis, Dows, and Diana Kreiss, Central Dental Supply. The Operative Dentistry makeover was won by Amy Kurtz, Prosthodontics, and the bleaching was won by Jan Lawler, Office of Student Affairs. 3 Page 3 Issue 871 Dr. Philip Wertz to Serve on Editorial Board Dr. Philip Wertz, OPRM, and Dows, has been selected to serve on the editorial board for the new online journal, Transdermal Magazine. It is the only journal that focuses on delivery of pharmaceuticals through the skin. The journal can be viewed at malmag.com. Its subscription is free. Dental Alumnus: Dr. Piyawat Phankosol During his recent trip to Thailand, Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics, and Dows (above, right), visited with Dr. Piyawat Phankosol (above, left), who in 1983 received his MS and certificate in removable prosthodontics from the UI College of Dentistry. (He also received a PhD in dental materials from the University of Tokyo and a certificate in maxillofacial prosthetics from the University of Texas, Houston.) Dr. Piyawat became the first trained maxillofacial prosthodontist in Thailand. Today, he is a faculty member at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand and is also King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand s dentist. To celebrate King Bhumibol s 80th birthday, Dr. Piyawat has been instrumental in fulfilling the king s goal of providing 100,000 dentures, made from silicon and resin, to elderly edentulous people in remote areas of Thailand. In order to fulfill this goal, Dr. Piyawat developed a method to shorten the production process as well as the denture-fitting procedures. Using his new method, a new set of teeth will be ready for the patient in one to three days. In addition to the daunting dentures project, Dr. Piyawat has also organized a mobile dental clinic, which serves more than 300 patients daily. In 2007, Dr. Piyawat won the Outstanding Technologist Award, which was created by the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the sponsorship of King Bhumibol. The award is given to technologists who use only local resources and raw materials to achieve their goals. Dr. Piyawat was named an awardee for developing various dental products such as implants and other dental prosthetics. (See more photos on page 4.)

One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. Nominations may be made by students, staff, faculty, alumni or patients. Nomination forms, program guidelines, and a listing of Ambassadors are available on the IntraDent under Services > Dental Human Resources > Rewards & Recognition-COD. Guidelines and nomination forms are also available from Jan Swartzendruber, assistant to the dean, N308 DSB. Lend a Hand to a Co-Worker Ralph Daniello (left), RN for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has always been one of the first to come to the aid of others. Now Ralph is in need of our assistance. Ralph has been placed on disability and needs time donated to his sick leave account to reach the 90 days necessary for his disability funds to begin. Please consider lending a hand to the valuable friend of the College of Dentistry. Aristotle coined the term physiognomy to support his own writings and inclinations on the subject. Since that time, the notion that character and personality are somehow imprinted in facial features has received considerable attention through a variety of approaches, nearly all of them unsupported by empirical evidence of any kind and many of them used for such nefarious purposes as racial stereotyping and the outright support of bigotry. 14 DSB Weekly Page 14 Regular Seasonal Flu Shots & TB Tests for Dentistry Faculty / Staff / Dental House Staff Regular seasonal flu shots will be given to faculty and staff (including dental house staff residents) in the DSB on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, from 11:30 am 1:30 pm. (Note: this is not the H1N1 vaccine. Information about it will be coming later.) TB tests will be given to faculty and staff in room S357 from 7:30 am 3:30 pm. Reminder: to receive a vaccination, you MUST have your University photo identification card. (Please note that this badge is different from the College of Dentistry photo ID badge.) Please wear short sleeves or a loose-fitting shirt/blouse. There will be no charge for: Dental House Staff will be given in the OPRM s Gil Lilly Conference Room, S355 Faculty and Staff (University of Iowa permanent full-time and part-time 50% or greater) will be given in ORPM s Gil Lilly Conference Room, S355 Adjunct Faculty given in OPRM s Clinical Lab, S357 (please note the different location). That's one every three minutes. There's something you can do to fight back against this disease, and we re asking for your help. Lee National Denim Day is one of the largest single-day fundraisers for breast cancer. On Friday, October 2, 2009, millions of people nationwide will slip into their favorite jeans and make a minimum $5 donation to support the Women's Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), who are bringing together world-class scientists to develop an early detection blood test and working in Lee Labs nationwide to find less toxic, more effective treatments for breast cancer patients. The College of Dentistry is proud to support this event and the fight against breast cancer. Your Staff Development Committee is coordinating the efforts for the College.
