Egea passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 at his residence in Plano, Texas, due to complications from lung cancer. He was born in Barranquilla, Colombia on June 1, He received a B.A. from the Universidad Pedagogica del Caribe, a M.A. from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature from Harvard University. His 33-year teaching career in Language and Literature, included Ohio State University, Emory University and the University of Texas at Dallas. Preceded in death by his loving parents and three brothers. He is survived by his wife Myrna, daughters Leonor and Verónica, step-son Michael, granddaughters Maya Rose, Jessica, Michelle and Timberly, great-grandson Alan, sons-in-law Julian and Juan Carlos, daughter-in-law Natelia. His life was dedicated to bridging differences among people and languages. Esteban will be remembered for his great humanity and devotion to his family, friends, and students. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at St. Mark s Catholic Church, 1201 Alma Drive, Plano, Texas Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park, Allen, Texas. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Allen, Texas. Memorials Dr. Egea's presence at Ohio State enriched my graduate-level experience. RABE, NOVEMBER 29, 2010 I graduated from UTD in 1989 with a degree in Literary Studies. Dr. Egea's class was one I had to take, and I had heard it was incredibly difficult. I tried EVERYTHING not to take this class...i tried taking a similar class at UNT, and I tried asking my advisor to allow me not to take it at all. Well, all efforts to no avail! Finally, someone suggested that I ask Dr. Egea about his class, and I remember speaking to him on the phone. I told him that I had heard that the class was impossibly difficult. He responded, "Really?" Well, I ended up having to take it, and it was, by far, one of my most favorite classes of my college years. I still, to this day, use him as an example of the fact that we can't always count on what we hear. The class was informative every single evening, and I am blessed to have known him and to have been in that class. Although I was in science and he in the languages program, we got to see and work with each other over the years with the Teacher Education Program. He was a person of integrity and scholastic honesty. Professionalism, tempered with humanity, was always present in his thoughts as we sought to give "birth" to a superior program for training teachers.
