Svral landscap placs hav bn listd by th National Trust, and th ntir campus was adoptd into th National Estat in 1980 by th Australian Hritag Commission. As wll, th Univrsity rcivd th inaugural WA Civic Dsign Award in 1986 and thr ar many formal spacs listd on th Stat Hritag Rgistr and Municipal Hritag Invntoris. Whil many of th landscap qualitis of th campus ar accptd today, idas such as crating a cathdral of pin trs (Somrvill Auditorium) wr quit radical for thir tim and not part of th original planning. Th Sunkn Gardn was cratd out of th opportunity to find a us for an xcavation sit, and th Tropical Grov was anothr unplannd accidnt a scrn of vgtation to concal gardnrs huts. Gordon Clif ton Harold Dsbrow-Annar won th 1914 comptition for laying out th Crawly sit for Univrsity purposs ; howvr it was th 1927 Wilkinson plan which has primarily influncd th dvlopmnt of th campus. Hampdn Road Th advic of Sir John Winthrop Hacktt in slcting th Crawly sit for Th Univrsity of Wstrn Australia in 1913 was that campus dsign should b basd on convnint, wid and spacious lins and that th rivrfront providd on of th rarst attractions offrd any of th univrsitis in Australia. Th Crawly Campus Consrvation Managmnt Plan (CCCMP) 2008 idntifis all buildings, placs and artworks of significanc on campus and is considrd as th dfinitiv consrvation manual for th campus. Ths buildings rspondd wll to th Wilkinson Plan 1927 and bcam th xmplar of futur campus architctur. Th grandur of composition, richnss of dtail and colour of th buildings hav st a formidabl dsign standard for subsqunt dvlopmnt. In th main, latr dvlopmnt has rspctd th qualitis of th original buildings and th Univrsity njoys a campus with a totality of dsign rar on campuss dvlopd ovr a priod of tim and undr a varity of influncs. Architctural Styl Th architctural succss of th campus is built on individual buildings, ach succssful architctural statmnts in thir own right, yt dsignd to b compatibl with thir nighbours. In 2002, th Univrsity built its scond major building offcampus at th Kn and Juli Michal Building, 7. Dsignd by Stv Woodland (Cox Howltt & Baily Woodland,) th building r-intrprts th campus asthtic whil introducing diffrnt matrials and an architctural form influncd by th original commrcial function of th building and local planning constraints. On campus buildings ar not subjct to ruls such as st-backs and hight rstrictions. Colonnads on th building hlp link it back from Broadway to th campus, with Winthrop Towr as an nd vista. Thr will b many mor Univrsity buildings built btwn campus and Broadway, and th Michal building is sn to b an urban planning xmplar of mting Univrsity and community xpctations. Dirctions 2031 and Byond classifid UWA-QEII as a Spcialisd Stratgic Cntr, and signals improvmnts in public transport and th nd for highr dnsity dvlopmnt, possibly stting minimum dnsitis as wll as maximum. Buildings of gratr scal will b considrd though incrasd hight should not unduly ovrshadow landscapd and othr spacs. In 1959, Gordon Stphnson rcommndd that it was undsirabl to mak provision for undrgraduat classs in buildings byond th third lvl. Whil this has not bn adoptd as a principl, it is prfrabl that th ntry lvl of a taching building on campus is th location of major undrgraduat activity. Th provision of mixd-us buildings is ncouragd in Dirctions 2031 and Byond as a mans of nlivning strts and sharing rsourcs such as car parking. Offcampus buildings, or thos on th primtr of campus, particularly fronting activ strts such as Broadway and Hampdn Road, hav th opportunity to intract with th community, through th us of ground floor rtailing or univrsity uss, with rsarch or rsidntial accommodation on th othr floors. Th siting of th Businss School (2009) on th southrn dg of campus not only gav th Faculty prominnc, but also hlpd rstor balanc to a campus which had for many yars bn focusd on th Hacktt Mmorial Buildings at th northrn nd. A nw roundabout and ntranc off Hacktt Driv gav additional prominnc to th Businss School, which now fulfils a similar anchor rol to th campus as Winthrop Hall. Th 2000 Plan cappd parking at 4,250 bays, of which 3,300 wr controlld by th Univrsity and th rmaining 950 by local govrnmnts. It is intndd to continu this cap. Th Univrsity has continud to grow in studnt numbrs dspit th cap and will grow to 25,000 studnts by approximatly 2015, indicating that accss has bn accommodatd by mans othr than privat vhicl and will continu to do so. Th policy of having mor studnts living closr to Crawly is likly to rsult in an incras in walking and cycling accss to campus. As th campus land ara xpands, th associatd parking provisions for taching and rsarch buildings will b maintaind.
