The award is presented to a senior student that showed interest and achievement in Community Dentistry and Dental Public Health. The award was presented to her by Dr. John Warren. (Above, left to right): Connor Elmitt (DDS 14) received the Delta Dental Award for Excellence in Geriatric and Special Needs Dentistry. The award is presented to a student who shows exceptional clinical proficiency and understanding of complex oral health needs of the frail elderly and medically complex adults. The award is presented to a senior student interested in special populations and above average clinically. The award was presented to him by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to a senior student who demonstrates compassion for those with special needs and possesses leadership skills. The award was presented to her by Dr. Howard Cowen. (Left to right) Abbie Otto (DDS 14) received the Brian Stone Memorial Award. The award is presented to a senior student who has participated in volunteerism and community outreach projects and/or provided service for the elderly, medically compromised, and/or people with disabilities. Dr. John Warren, Ashley Deemer (DDS 14), Katy Cook (DDS 14 ), Dan Branson (DDS 14), Jessica Grabouski (DDS 14), Eric Popp (DDS 14), Jena Hopkins (DDS 14) and Chong Shao (DDS 14). These students, along with Justine Stemper, Chad Waltz, Levi Zarbano, Ian Bell, Paul O Kane and Christina Schiltz (all DDS 14), who were unable to attend, were recognized for achieving Distinction in Dental Public Health. Heller Dental Public Health Graduate Research Award and the Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health, AAPHD, Third Place. The award is presented to students who show exceptional interest and leadership toward the improvement of health and the well-being of society through a commitment to preventive dentistry. Jonathan Meyer (above, left) accepts the W. Philip Phair Preventive Dentistry Award from Marsha Cunningham. (Left): Courtney Bohn (D2) was recognized for receiving second place, Iowa Dental Association Annual Meeting Table Clinic Competition. Her mentor was Dr. Michelle McQuistan, Preventive & Community Dentistry. (Not pictured): Trine Nielsen, a Danish dental exchange student, received special recognition for excellence in geriatric & special needs dentistry. She spent one semester at the UI College of Dentistry before returning to Denmark.

6 Page 6 Dr. Gerald Denehy Celebrates His Birthday! Dr. Gerald Denehy, Department of Operative Dentistry, recently celebrated his birthday with a cake his daughter, Allison, ordered from the Late Night Cake Company in North Liberty. The bakery also made teeth on sticks (see below, left). Dr. Denehy pronounced the surprise treats very creative and added, [The cake] did not last long in our seminar room!

8 Page 8 What Do You Enjoy About Summer? (Part 2) The bugs...not THOSE bugs...fireflies that put on a sparkling show in late June and early July, and the sound of crickets. Long day light hours, the greening of the countryside, and the 4th of July. (Dr. Jeff Banas, Dows Dental Research and Department of Pediatric Dentistry) I enjoy spring because it is a break from winter. I enjoy summer because it is a break from spring. I enjoy autumn because it is a break from summer. I enjoy winter because it is a break from autumn. Many years ago I lived in California for a little over a year. It was boring. I missed the seasons of the year. (Dr. Harold Hammond, faculty emeritus, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine) Catching lightning bugs with my granddaughter, feeling the cool dew under my bare feet in the early morning moon set. (Dr. Lauren Jensen, Department of Endodontics resident) Cool mornings, light breeze and gentle midnight rain on the roof with a kitty by my side. (Associate Dean for Research Clark Stanford) Boating. Family time at the lake, late nights on the deck looking at the sky. Sweet tea, motorcycle rides, the sound of birds singing in the early morning, and frogs croaking in the evening. Flowers. You Could be Selected to Present at the 2015 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition The ADEA Annual Session Program Committee invites you to propose educational programming for the 2015 meeting in Boston. (The deadline for educational program submissions was Monday, June 2.)
