3 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement Manasota BUDS provides programs and services for individuals with Down syndrome and their families from birth through the adult years. Our core programs and services include new parent kits, monthly meetings, scholarships for summer camps and other activities, family events, programs and workshops, and Buddy Walk (annual awareness event). Needs Statement 1. Increase Manasota BUDS scholarship fund for summer camp and enrichment activities for individuals with Down syndrome - $10, Provide dance and martial arts classes for children with Down syndrome - $ Provide partial Therapeutic Riding (hippotherapy) scholarships for 10 children - $ Provide scholarships to BUDS families to assist with the cost of registration and hotel to attend the National Down Syndrome Conference - $10,000 5.Provide events to promote community awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome - $500 - $1500 Background Statement Manasota BUDS was formed in May 2002 by a small group of families who wanted to network, compare notes, share stories, and support one another. We held our first Buddy Walk in October 2002 and will celebrate our 16th Anniversary Buddy Walk on October 21, Statement from the Board Chair Manasota BUDS is committed to serving people with Down syndrome and their families in our community. The current Board is comprised of parents or family members who have a child with Down syndrome. Many of our programs have been designed by parents who have found a void in the community or other services. We are strong believers in supporting children and adults with Down syndrome, siblings, and parents to help strengthen families. 5 PROGRAMS New Parent Kits Description New and expectant parent kits are available upon request. Kits include books and inspirational essays, local contact names and phone numbers, and information about Manasota BUDS, NDSS (National Down Syndrome Society), and NDSC (National Down Syndrome Congress). All materials are compiled and approved by Manasota BUDS parents, with families in mind. Budget $1, New Parent Kits are generally available at the following locations: Sarasota Memorial Manatee Memorial Lakewood Ranch Hospital Early Steps Healthy Start, Sarasota Healthy Start, Manatee USF Dept. of Genetics Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Education, General/Other Education, General/Other Yes People/Families with People of Developmental Disabilities Families Children and Youth (0-19 years) Less stress and fear of the unknown for parents of children with Down syndrome. Well-informed, confident parents of children with Down syndrome. Number of families who reach out to Manasota BUDS after receiving a kit; and feedback from families and other agencies who distribute the new parent kits. Program Success Examples A letter to the editor, SRQ Magazine, September 2011: When Mason's diagnosis of Down syndrome was confirmed, Katie (Katie Powers, Manatee Memorial, NICU) delivered a gift to us in the NICU that had a big impact on our lives. It was a New Parent Kit from Manasota BUDS that was filled with many excellent resources. It contained books and DVDs for us as parents and a contact person who I reached out to immediately." Most small group activities also have a therapeutic goal. Ex. Sensory integration, social skill building, community awareness. Small group activities provide an opportunity for networking with other individuals with Down syndrome in the same age range. Attendance at events. Recognized by Manatee and Sarasota School Boards as a resource for parents. Partner with several other local nonprofit organizations. Parents of YADS (young adults with Down syndrome) report appreciation of opportunities for social interaction. Parents of Little Buddies (age birth to five) report appreciation of friendships and networking that takes place during events. 6

7 Scholarships Description Scholarships to Hope Haven Down Syndrome Clinic in Jacksonville, FL; summer camp and enrichment programs; state and national conferences. Budget $15, Hippotherapy scholarship programs at any approved therapeutic riding program. Education conferences at the local, state and national level -- informed parents/families feel empowered and encouraged in making decisions for their loved ones with Down syndrome to help them reach their full potential. Short term success results in confident and well-informed parents supporting their loved one with Down syndrome. 8 Program Success Examples An example of our scholarship program success is when families return from a national conference eager to share what they learned with other families in the group at a monthly meeting, via social media, or at a BUDS social event. A family new to the area attended an event and was informed of services available for their child with Down syndrome in our community as a result.
