2 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement The Lemon Bay Playhouse will become the recognized community destination for arts activities serving as a learning space to harness local talent and extend community cultural awareness through the performing arts. In the last few years, community awareness and appreciation for Lemon Bay Playhouse has increased markedly. The demand for our performances has increased to the point where our plays presented in season, even with additional performances, sell out. In the past, many people were being turned away at the box office because of lack of seating capacity. In response, we added an extra week of five performances to our January through April schedule. And now, with the added people moving into the area, we find that we are having to turn away people again. The four Showcase performers, that are scheduled on the weekends between our plays during the season, bring Lemon Bay Playhouse to the attention of many more people, adding further demand for our tickets. Needs Statement It has become eveident that we need to grow. To that end we are looking to move to larger quarters. We are presently negotiating to purchase a larger building in the same area. We are undertaking a capital campaign to help pay for the building and its renovations.we would welcome any donation to the theater in general for upkeep of the facility and improvements to the building. Donations designated for youth programs/sponsorships are also welcome. Background Statement Lemon Bay Playhouse, The Englewood Community Theatre, Inc., was formed by a few local amateur actors and incorporated in April The group took over a rented store-front space in July of that year and acquired a non-profit 501 (C) 3 organization status. In August a two-performance talent night was held to raise funds needed to convert the space to a theater. The first full production, "Play On", opened September 24, The first few years were a struggle to find directors, actors, sets and props, even audiences, to support the productions. Traditional opening night galas were started in December 1989 and this got each future production off to a good start. Beginning with the fall, 1991 season, arrangements for group sales and whole theater rental were made and for the first time season ticket holders were given the opportunity to reserve their seats. Since then all seats are reserved. In the 1991 season there were 23 season tickets sold. w there are almost 900. A mailing list was begun in late 1989 and as telephone callers reserved seats we added their names, addresses and phone numbers to the list. In addition to local publicity and mailings we began telephoning those on the list to advise of a new play opening. By 1992 we were filling most seats and were able to open a savings account. The program book, supported by advertising sales, was begun with the fall of This book has continued to show a profit and has made many new community friends for the theater. The floods of the summer of 1995 convinced the Board of the desperate need for more adequate space. The building at 96 West Dearborn was available and in a great leap of optimism the Board negotiated with the owner to carry our mortgage and we closed on the sale in late September, An "open house" for the community in early October was well attended. Volunteers were signed up on the spot and many are now the back-bone of our large group of faithful volunteers. Thanks to careful financial management, profitable shows, generous donations, and welcome grants the theater has not only made great improvements in the physical plant, making it more comfortable for actors and audiences, but has also managed to pay off the mortgage in less than 6 years.however, the need for more space for costume storage, offices, and needed rehearasl space, led us to purchase the adjacent building at 80 W. Dearborn St. That mortgage was paid off in 2 years thanks to the generosity of our patrons and donors. Lemon Bay Playhouse has matured to a successful community theater because of the supportive community and the tireless volunteers. Statement from the Board Chair Lemon Bay Playhouse is and has been an active, vital part of the Englewood community for 32 yrs. We have 2

3 brought live theater to the community where none existed before. We strive to present some of the best plays available using local talent while maintaining a reasonable price making our entertainment available to the whole community. As with most community theaters, funding is a vital need for us. The Board of Lemon Bay Playhouse has been working on the needs of our organization. Our Strategic Plan, which was passed in 2013 and can be found on our web site, lays out our proposed plans for the 7 years ending in Many of the goals set forth have already been achieved. We feel that adherence to our mission statement is critical to our growth and well being. Increasing opportunities for the community at large to participate is essential to fulfilling our mission statement. The organization has been able to sustain itself with the proceeds of our high quality productions, but we feel the need to expand our outreach programs to include a more diverse spectrum of the community. We utilize a unique outreach program of our Readers Theater to bring live entertainment, at no charge, to groups and organizations throughout the area including nursing homes and shut-ins. In addition, we hold both adult and children's acting classes that are open to the community at large. We purchased the adjoining building to provide space for pre-performance activities. This enabled us to add a seventh production to our season and provide stage time for local children s groups to use our theater for their recitals. It also makes it possible to bring in musical groups on dark weekends, at reasonable prices, for the entertainment of our community. We are seeking sustaining patrons of all levels who share our vision for the future of our community. 5 Adult and Children's Theater Classes Description Basic and intermediate acting classes as well as a Shakespeare workshop for adults. A summer children's theater workshop. Budget $5, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Performing Arts Adults Children Only (5-14 years) Provide an entertaining and educational experience in theater presentation and production to Englewood. Bring a wider appreciation of the skills in acting and theater production to the community and expand our talent pool. Enrollment in the classes. Since we are just now resuming our classes after a short hiatus due to lack of instructors, we have no hard data at present. In the past, we have had satisfactory enrollment and have increased our talent pool considerably to the delight of our local community. Comments Program Comments by Organization We are a small community theater that supports ourselves by our ticket sales and donations of our members and friends. We continue to endeavored to keep our services to the community affordable and have not raised prices in several years. We have accomplished this through the generosity of our many volunteers, from our board of trustees to the actors on the stage and the people serving punch in the lobby. However, because of the growth of our community, we realize that we must grow. To that end, we are negotiating to purchase a larger building in the same area. We are starting a capital campaign to help pay for the new facility. We wish to maintain our pricing so as to remain available to the largest possible number of people in our community. To that end, we have undertaken donation appeals and will be holding some fundraising events during the season. However, this being a not so affluent community, these we expect will have only moderate success. Therefore, we are seeking grants to aid us in making the needed improvements so that we can continue to bring the first class entertainment to our community and the outreach programs that are so popular as well as continue with the education in theater to our friends and their children. 5
