2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Background Anthony Kennedy Shriver is the Founder and Chairman of Best Buddies International, which he created in 1989 to foster one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Recognizing the tremendous volunteer potential of university students, Anthony first inspired his college peers to personally collaborate in expanding the realm of opportunities that persons with intellectual disabilities should experience.today, through Anthony's stewardship and entrepreneurial spirit, Best Buddies has grown into a leading nonprofit entity with increasing international reach across six continents; establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.best Buddies is comprised of six programs that positively impact more than 700,000 participants every year. The organization is active in each of the 50 United States, and operates accredited international programs in 46 countries.best Buddies is also systematically implementing its 2010 Initiative that will witness the organization's continued significant growth, both domestically and overseas.a graduate of Georgetown University, Anthony has been recognized for his work on behalf of Best Buddies with diverse international accolades and honorary degrees; he resides in Miami Beach, together with his wife Alina and their five children. 3 Board Chair Statement The biggest challenge that Best Buddies faces is funding. Funds for the newly established state office were privately raised by a group of parents who wanted Best Buddies in Tennessee. w, not only do we need to raise funds to maintain the office, but we also needs funds in order to expand the programs throughout the state. 3

4 Programs Programs Friendship Programs - Elementary Schools, Middles Schools, High Schools & Colleges Description Best Buddies CollegesBest Buddies Colleges pairs people with IDDs in one-to-one friendships with college students. In the past, individuals with IDDs have not had the opportunity to have friends outside of their own environment. By becoming a College Buddy, volunteers offer a Peer Buddy the chance to explore a new way of life. College chapters have grown from one single chapter at Georgetown to active chapters on more than 425 campuses worldwide.best Buddies High Schools Since 1993, Best Buddies High Schools has paired students with IDDs in one-to-one friendships with high school students. By introducing Best Buddies into public and private high schools, participants are crossing the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without. Today, Best Buddies boasts more than 900 high school chapters worldwide. Best Buddies Middle Schools In today's middle schools, students with IDD often enter the same building and walk the same hallways as their peers, but they are left out of social activities. Started in 2001, Best Buddies Middle Schools is already active on 145 middle school campuses pairing students with IDD in one-to-one friendships. Best Buddies Elementary SchoolsGives children with and without disabilities without IDD a platform to connect, interact, and form friendships. Group activities are designed to eliminate stereotypes and social barriers, thereby creating a school culture of awareness and inclusion. Population Served,, Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The Friendship Update is a form completed monthly by the Chapter President that logs the progress of Buddy Pairs. Each participant reports on whether or not each member is meeting their commitments the friendships are measured on a 5 point scale. Mid- and End-Year Reports are submitted by student officers at the end of each semester. These reports detail chapter activities, number of matches, goals for the following semester, etc. Best Buddies' staff uses the information gleaned from these reports along with detailed information gathered throughout the semester from communication, observation, and chapter visits to complete their own comprehensive Mid- and End-Year Reports for each chapter. Each chapter is rated on a 5 point scale. The Hardman Survey, developed by Dr. Michael Hardman, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Education at the University of Utah, analyzes factors such as whether participants enjoyed their experience, whether they would recommend it to others, and whether they gained a better understanding of the challenges faced by people with IDD. It is the longest running and largest survey of its kind in the world. 87% of non-disabled high school and 97% of non-disabled college participants enjoyed their experience and would participate in Best Buddies again.90% of Peer Buddies and 95% of College Peer Buddies would recommend participation to others91% of high school students and 82% of adults with IDD would recommend Best Buddies to others91% of high school Buddies and 83% of adult Buddies enjoyed the experience 4

The introduction of the Adult Friendships program allows more citizens throughout Nashville and the surrounding areas to get involved with Best Buddies Human Services, General/Other Services for Individuals with Disabilities People/Families with People of Developmental Disabilities, Adults, Jobs Program Description Category Population Served Best Buddies Jobs is a supported employment program that secures competitive paying jobs for people with IDD, therefore enabling them to work as respecting individuals. The program develops partnerships with employers, assists with the hiring process, and provides ongoing support to the employee and employer.
