(USABDA) Public Supported Charity 1
2 Statements Statements Mission The Orlando Chapter is one of 180 chapters of USA Dance, a 501(c)(3) educational/charitable org to serve the community by promoting the benefits -- social, physical, mental -- of ballroom dancing - defined as ALL the partner, lead-and-follow dances - sometimes broken down into Latin, Swing, Smooth, and Country classifications. Impact In 2013, more than 100 volunteer dancers performed at more than 50 events, including other non-profits' fundraisers; schools, hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, arts and cultural events. We provided dance instruction for 75 Special Needs dancers, and 14 Visually-impaired dancers. We awarded more than $3,000 to young dancers who needed financial help. We donated $4,000 to support of children's hospitals, a van-load of food to Second Harvest Food Bank and a van-load of toys to BASE Camp/Children with Cancer All of this was accomplished with financial efficiency (no fundraising costs).in 2014, we plan to exceed in each of the above programs, plus establish a program for wheelchair dancers.. Needs We will need to continue to recruit volunteers who are enthusiastic about giving their time and talent and sharing their love of dance with the public, with youth, visually-impaired, and the Special Needs Population. We plan to expand the number of dance clubs and instruction in area schools and colleges, and expand our Special Needs population dance programs, visually-impaired, and minority/disadvantaged youth programs. Background The Orlando Chapter of USA DANCE was chartered in April 1991, and has grown to 300 members. We are a leader in the Central Florida dance community, providing major ballroom dance events for dancers of all ages, ethnicities, and abilities; promoting the professional dance studio/instructor community; educating the public about the many benefits of ballroom dancing; and helping the various dance communities and sub-communities communicate and cooperate with each other. CEO/Executive Director Statement Our chapter hosts monthly dances with dance performances; a charity ball benefiting Children's Hospitals; plus collection of food for Second Harvest Food Bank and toys for Toys for Tots. We have a youth financial aid fund; support high school and college ballroom dance clubs and lessons; perform outreach public dance exhibitions, co-sponsor dance lessons for minority/disadvantaged youth, visually-impaired youth, and Special Needs Populations; and provide information to the community about dance lessons, venues, and special dance events. We work in cooperation -- not competition -- with area dance clubs, studios, instructors, and venues, to promote their contributions to dancing. Board Chair Statement From the Orlando Chapter President: Since election in 2001, I have devoted all my time to improving the quality and quantity of dancing in Central Florida. We developed an Outreach Dance Program that won the Golden Rule Award in 2002 and the United Arts Best Organization Outreach A+ Award in We were awarded Florida USA DANCE Chapter of the Year for We have existing programs (and are always looking for new ways) to reach out and share the joy and elegance of ballroom dancing with the public, particularly with youth, disabled, and disadvantaged populations. Our Youth/Student Grant Fund for dancers is the only one in the area. We are the only organization that ties together all the diverse dance sub-communities in the area, informing them of each other's programs and events, and introducing them to new dance types and populations. We provide free dance performances for many other non-profit organizations, schools, and festivals in the area. We hosted a major Olympic Day Celebration on June 23, 2013, sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic Committee and featuring appearances by Olympic medalists. The event included ballroom dance performances and model competitions. Areas of Service 2
3 Geographic Areas Served Areas FL - Orange FL - Seminole FL - Osceola Most of our activities take place in the Orange/Seminole/Osceola area, but we also occasionally serve Lake, Volusia, Brevard, and Polk Counties, in cooperation with USA DANCE chapters in those areas. Service Categories Primary Organization Type Arts,Culture & Humanities Secondary Organization Type Recreation & Sports Tertiary Organization Type Education 3
4 Impact Goals Our Chapter's ultimate goal is to maximize the number of individuals with Special Needs, individuals with visual impairment, disadvantaged youth, and other school/college students, who can enjoy the physical and social benefits of ballroom dancing through our many programs. We will do this in a very cost-efficient manner through our use of volunteer instructors and dance partners, plus our very low costs of administration because all of our work is done by our Board members and other unpaid volunteers. Capabilities We are fortunate to have excellent relationships with the 20+ dance studios and 40+ independent instructors in the area, who donate their considerable talent to help our programs. And our 300 members are wonderful about volunteering their time and talent for our programs, also. We believe in the power of volunteerism to keep expenses to a minimum, thereby obtaining the most "bang for the buck." 4
