The faith-based ministry at th Ave. E. helps former prisoners get their life back on track. Jim Russo Prison Ministries was started in 1979 by Jim Russo. Prison was no stranger to Russo, who at one time was on the "10 Most Wanted List" for his activities as a con man and incarcerated in the federal prison in Atlanta. He was eventually freed from prison and joined St. John s United Methodist Church in Sarasota. He became a United Methodist minister and started the prison ministry by giving Bibles to offenders in Florida prisons and visiting in-mates. While in prison, Russo found God, which changed his life. His granddaughter is the current director of the program, continuing on her grandfather's dream. Statement from the Board Chair It is not the tax dollars that are saved when a man successfully reintegrates into society that matters most. It is the individual; his attitudes, his successes, and his joys in being free from the shackles that bound him to a life of crime and ultimate despair. Just as the weakest link in a chain determines its strength, so goes our society. Our Development Center re-forges society's weakest links into strong, productive citizens. It is your prayers, your dollars, and your donated goods that make this possible. You are the giver of renewed life and are an important member of the Jim Russo family! Statement from the CEO/Executive Director We offer a safe, peaceful, faith-based drug and alcohol free home where men can get the loving support, mentoring, and spiritual guidance to life a better life. We provide a place to live, food, clothing, transportation, assistance with meeting conditions of release, help with obtaining identification and/or other legal documents, Bible studies, AA/NA meetings, life skills classes, and more! 2
3 Areas Served FL The Russo Ministry accepts applications from prisoners released from all Florida prisons, who meet our requirements and are willing to follow our rules. We also accept men from county jail. Service Categories Primary Organization Type Secondary Organization Type Tertiary Organization Type Human Services Housing, Shelter Public & Societal Benefit 3
4 PROGRAMS Russo Developmental Program Description -Provide counseling and guidance to help men re-orient to society -Provide housing, food, clothing and basic needs. -Provide assistance in gaining employment -Provide bus passes and bicycles for transportation Budget $140, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Human Services, General/Other Services for Specific Populations Males Offenders/Ex-Offenders Alcohol, Drug, Substance Abusers At the end of five months in this program most of those participating in this program are well on their way to independent living and being successful citizens. The time spent in the program varies with each participant. We would like to see 100% of these men find jobs and never re-offend. We provide them with all the tools to be able to do this. We do random drug testing on the men. We also regulate each individual's finances, to encourage accountability and wise spending habits. The men are required to attend each of the meetings and are encouraged to speak with a private counselor if needed. Program Success Examples Emory Parks graduated from the program in 2003 and returned to work as a night manager for the development center. He spent ten years behind bars before coming to the Jim Russo Development Center. He credits the program with changing his life. Mintlow, who spent 15 years in Everglades Correctional Institution, had hoped someday to return to being a chef, his profession before going to prison. After coming to the Jim Russo Development Center he said, "It's very peaceful here. To me, it's home." "I feel good," he said. "When you come from prison and you're treated with dignity and respect, it helps." He was able to successfully find and maintain employment as a chef for several years. He has now returned to the Jim Russo Development Center as residential manager. 4
5 Mama Mia's Love Train Description Mama Mia God's Love Train has been put on hold this year. We will reevaluate for the upcoming year. Budget $16, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Human Services, General/Other Children & Youth Services Children and Youth (0-19 years) We would like to include more prisons in the upcoming year, so we can impact more families. Would like to provide many more prisoner's children with gifts at Christmas. Would like to increase it by at least 50%. We know this is working by heart felt thank you's. We also receive many letters from the prison chaplains about the success of this program. Testimonial: Some things one never forgets. It was Christmas Eve and I knew Santa wouldn't come because Mom was driving us to Atlanta Federal Penitentiary to see my Dad. We would drive most of the night, then stop at an all night truck stop to clean up and change our clothes. Then it would take several hours to be "processed" (searched and identified). I was so excited for Dad to see me in my pretty Christmas dress. When I finally saw him, he was crying because he didn't have a present for me. So he started this program. He never wanted another child to go without a Christmas present or for another parent who is incarcerated to feel the pain that he experienced. by Laura Russo The impact is great for the entire family. Christmas Socks Ministry Description Provide Christmas bags for local inmates in 2 local county jails with socks, comb, calendar, reading material and Christmas candy. Budget $3, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Human Services, General/Other Mentoring Adults At-Risk Populations Offenders/Ex-Offenders Unable to monitor due to changing populations. Unable to monitor due to changing populations. Speak with Chaplains annually to assess popularity of program and items received in Christmas bags, and the possibility of additional items for future bags. Much requested program from jail Chaplains. Comments 5
6 Program Comments by Organization One of our challenges, like any non profit organization, is finances. Another challenge is reaching the hearts of these men with our programs, to encourage them to change from the inside out, instead of just changing the outward. A complete change of heart that affects their whole being. Our greatest opportunity is to be able to help these ex-offenders reintegrate back into society. We are excited about the opportunities available for these men who enter our program and leave successfully. 6

There does not seem to be much interest by the general public to address or fund this problem. In light of the government cut-backs and the economy, we struggle to find the necessary funding needed now and to expand our programs to reach and help more ex-offenders. 7

The opportunities are helping those in need. We make productive citizens out of ex-offenders by teaching them the skills necessary to stay out of prison and live happier and productive lives. The government doesn't have to house and feed these men and can collect taxes from them, therefore, reducing its cost. 9

We provide food, clothing, classes and computer job search. The challenge is finding jobs quickly, for the men to pay their program fees, and begin to save for their future to transition back into society. We depend heavily on donations and since they have decreased over the past year, this has caused a financial burden on our men to supplement with their program fees. We believe this is hindering us from helping many who need and deserve a second chance. Our effectiveness is also decreased because of our lack of funds. That's why we need help from the Giving Partner! Financial Comments by Foundation Financial information taken from IRS Forms 990 and 990-EZ.
