2 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement Accomplishments:1. Prepared and performed both a Spring and Holiday Concert of 18 musical pieces at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center with 35 singers, some able to read music and some not. The chorus was accompanied by local musicians and soloists. It was very well received by the community.2. Diversity performed at the installation ceremony for the new pastor at Saint Andrew United Church of Christ.3. Successfully embarked on a search for a new Artistic Director and secured the well experienced and talented, Bruce Ensinger. 4. Formed a Recruitment and Retention committee where more that 20 new and diverse voices joined the chorus.5. Supported All Faiths Food Bank with a successful food drive during the month of vember Also, supported First Step's Mother and Infant program donating many items of need for both the moms and infants during the month of December Goals 2017: 1. To contribute to the artistic enhancement of the Greater Sarasota Community by providing at least 2 major choral performances.2. To continue to serve as advocates and supporters of LGBT youth causes and organizations. 3. To serve as a bridge in uniting the LGBT and straight communities through music and song.4. To extend our outreach and engagement to other diverse segments of the Sarasota community through partnerships with schools, churches, and mosques. Needs Statement Pressing needs:1. An underwriter for our holiday and/or spring concerts ($6,000 to $10,000.)2. Funding for updated brochures, concert playbills, advertising, and business cards ($2,000 to $4,000.)3. A laptop computer with updated software for accounting, management, and technical support of our website and social media presence ($3,000.) 4. Continuing funding to support the replacement of dated and deteriorated costumes and scenery ($2,500.)5. A color laser printer to assist with coping programs, inserts, news letters and documents for mailing to Diversity supporters ($800-$ ) Background Statement Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota debuted originally as the Gulf Coast Men's Chorus in December of 1997 and joined with the women's group Harmony in Today, together as Diversity, the chorus performs in many venues in the Greater Sarasota Community. Diversity regularly performs at the Pride Festivals of both Sarasota and Manatee counties, World Aids Day ceremonies and has participated in a joint concert with The Sarasota Pops Orchestra directed by Robyn Bell. Additionally, Diversity joins with the international LGBT community every four years at the GALA festivals nationwide, and performed Sing for a Cure at Carnegie Hall in New York City. As we have developed over the years, we have been fortunate to be inspired and led by some amazingly talented artistic directors. Our Interim Artistic Director is Bruce Ensinger. Bruce joined the Diversity family in January as our accompanist. When Jon Arterton was no longer able to be our conductor, Bruce agreed to accompany and plan our December concert. Bruce earned an AB degree in Music Education from West Liberty State College and an MM in Music History and Literature from Ohio University. He completed additional studies at the University of Zürich, Princeton University, Westminster Choir College, Duquesne University, WVU and St. John Lateran in Rome, Italy. Ensinger has been a church musician since he was a 7th grader and taught public school music in WV for 38 years. Here is a statement to you from Bruce Ensinger: To the Philanthropic Community: "The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity. What is there that can transcend deep difference and stubborn divisions? The arts. They have a wonderful universality. Art has the potential to unify. It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts can lift us up." Former Texas Congresswoman Barbara Jordan I am humbled to serve as director/accompanist for Diversity. The group made me feel so welcome when I became their accompanist in January. As I assume the role of Artistic Director and meet regularly with members of the board, I appreciate Diversity even more. t only do they share their love of music and care and concern for each other, they are assisting with a food drive in October and purchasing gifts for mothers and infants in need at Christmas. Daily we see one group of people positioned another. w, more than ever, we need to rejoice in our differences and help those who need our help. Diversity has members from various races, economic class, religious affiliation, and professional background but work together beautifully for the good of the entire organization. Their positive attitude and great work ethic inspire me. Come to one of our concerts and let us 2
3 inspire you. Statement from the Board Chair Seven years ago, I was looking for a place where I could feel comfortable and be accepted as part of a community. I joined Diversity: The Voices of Sarasota because I recognized it an organization which brings people together as one through song. I was asked to step forward and become the President of this group to lead us back from our losses, both financial and artistic. After losing our Artistic Director, accompanist, and Executive Board mid-season , my job was to help bring us back to being a loving family of performers. We are now on track and flourishing to fulfill our mission to inspire the LGBT and Greater Sarasota Community through song. Our expenses remain a challenge as we depend on members' dues, donations, ticket sales, and sponsors, all of which vary from month to month. While it is not always apparent to our audiences and supporters, our expenses are substantial. Some of our expenses include the purchase and licensing of music, venue rental, salaries for our artistic director, website management, costumes, rehearsal space, rent, storage and more. We are diligent with our budgeting just to make ends meet. Our margins are small. We are still in need of financial support to afford our two main performances each year. We are an LGBT and LGBTfriendly group, and we are unique within the Sarasota artistic community. We are made up of people who share a common belief in equality for all. Race, religion, and sexual orientation does not separate our chorus members. Our audiences represent the same diversity and love of music that the chorus does. I feel we are a family who shares all things in our lives. The hurtful things we do as a society can only be changed by people participating and supporting Diversity's mission in our world and community. This is why I love singing and serving with this group and I can only hope that we will continue to grow and work to enrich our community. In May we will be performing a program called "All About Love" featuring a number of songs by Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and more. We are honored to have been asked to perform an original piece written by Ann Hampton Callaway honoring the memory of a young LGBT man, Tyler Clemente a violin student at Rutgers University. The chorus will be accompanied by a violinist, soloist and other local musicians. S.
