The staff and volunteers at Abbott House work diligently to reduce further trauma for the children who come here. Several items are routinely used as a function of this work and are always in high demand. Teddy bears, blankets, washable markers and play dough are all welcome donations. Become a Child Advocate. The children who come through our doors have often experienced or witnessed a trauma related to sexual or severe physical abuse. The job of the Child Advocate is to welcome children to Abbott House, help them feel comfortable before and after their interview or medical exam, and interact with them through safe, fun play with games and toys. Child Advocates are required to complete the three-hour Abbott House training and orientation program and must submit to a criminal background check. Serve on one of Abbott House's Committees. Our committees help to plan various events, oversee elements of Abbott House's strategic plan such as fundraising, and help shape the course of specific aspects of programming, such as educational outreach. Committee members are not required to be members of the board. Join Abbott House's Board of Directors. Board members volunteer for terms of three years, and along with the executive director, oversee the general scope and vision of the organization. Be a sponsor for Abbott House's Annual Coaches' Luncheon. Sponsorships are available at several levels for our annual coaches' luncheon. Through a sponsorship, your name and company logo will be prominently displayed at our event, and you will be recognized at the event for your support. Make a one-time gift to Abbott House. As a nonprofit organization, we actively fund-raise for our programs and general operating expenses. One-time gifts can be given without restriction or in a designated manner. Make a contribution or bequest to Abbott House's endowment. While focusing on daily programs and services to children in a primary way, the board and staff of Abbott House are also looking toward the future. A healthy endowment is one way to ensure we will always be able to serve the children who come through its doors. Make a contribution or bequest to the Abbott House endowment and become part of that future. Statements Mission Mary Abbott Children's House's mission is to serve child victims of sexual and severe physical abuse and neglect through coordinated inter-agency investigation, intervention, education and advocacy. Background Founded in 1996, the Mary Abbott Children's House is a safe place for children to tell their stories after a sexual or severe physical trauma. 3 Programs Forensic Interviews Description Forensic Interviews What is a forensic interview? A forensic interview is a non-biased, court defensible fact-finding interview done at the request of law enforcement or child protective services. Forensic interviews are conducted by specially trained interviewers employed by the Mary Abbott Children's House. Abbott House's interviewers are highly experienced and maintain a victim-centered, child-friendly atmosphere in which a child can tell his or her story. What is the purpose of an interview? Without the forensic interview approach, various agencies involved in the investigation of a case of child abuse would need to conduct separate interviews to gather the information they need. Repeated interviewing would inevitably cause child victims to repeat the details of their abuse situation over and over, compounding initial trauma. The purpose of a forensic interview is to minimize the number of times children must tell their stories, and the multidisciplinary approach used at Abbott House encourages all agencies involved in the investigation of abuse, such as law enforcement, child protective services, the district attorney's office, and medical and mental health professionals, to work together. Who is interviewed at Abbott House? As a nationally certified Children's Advocacy Center, Abbott House interviews only children under the age of 18. Interviews must be requested by law enforcement agencies or child protective services. Cleveland, Garvin, and McClain Counties comprise Abbott House's official jurisdiction, judicial district 21, but Abbott House is authorized to serve any judicial district in Oklahoma in which a Children's Advocacy Center does not exist. In 2012, Abbott House served children in 19 Oklahoma counties. 4 Medical Assessment Program Description Category What is a medical assessment? A medical assessment is a simple, childfriendly process that looks at general health factors such as height and weight, vital signs, and an overall view of the child's body. In certain situations, forensic evidence is collected to aid investigators. Why might a medical assessment be offered to a child? To refer a child for further medical treatment or mental health needs. To reassure a parent and a child about medical concerns and to inform them about further resources. To assess a child for injuries or to photograph present injuries. To collect forensic evidence that may be used in an investigation. What is NOT part of the medical assessment? We do not provide any medications or provide a medical diagnosis for any conditions. We do not test for sexually transmitted diseases. We do not give any injections or draw blood.
