3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Sweet Blessings' mission is to convey Christ s love for His children by creating unforgettable birthday cakes for children living in poverty or experiencing life threatening illness. Because we believe recipients will feel as special as their cakes, all our cakes are covered in fondant, either multiple tiers or three dimensional, and designed with each specific child in mind. We accept referrals form churches, schools and service providers. The cakes are created by volunteers and delivered to the referral source who then gives it to the child/family, encouraging relationship development between children and the caring adults in their lives. Background Statement About eight years ago Ashley Gann s life was going in a completely different direction. She was working in the public health/substance abuse prevention field where she was recognized as one of South Carolina s leaders in the field. She was responsible for starting South Carolina s first Multijurisdictional Alcohol Enforcement Team and winning several local, state and national awards. The next step in her career was to obtain a Doctorate of Public Health. While going through the process of applying to DrPh programs Gann felt God tell her to make cakes. According to her, It was like God hit me in the head with a brick. A Frankfort native, Gann and her family moved back to Kentucky where she attended culinary school. Still unsure of why God put cakes in her life, and being offered a job in the public health field, Gann dropped out of culinary school and began working as Kentucky s Alcohol Prevention Enhancement Site Coordinator, helping communities combat underage drinking. She didn t decorate a cake for over a year. Eventually, Gann made a birthday cake for her daughter and began feeling God s tug on her heart once again. She took an entry level job in cake shop during wedding season, promising the owner she would work there at least six months. The Gann family used this time to pray intensely for God s direction and why He had brought cakes into their lives. Once again, Gann felt God working on her heart and telling her to, Spend more time making a difference and less time making a living. This all made sense when she heard her pastor talking about inner city outreach in downtown Lexington. It was at that time that she knew God was leading her to use cakes to reach children/families for Christ. Sweet Blessings was incorporated in October 2010 and received 501(c)3 status the following February. Its first recipient, Dalton, was referred by The Ronald McDonald House and received his cake February 26, In vember 2011 Sweet Blessings was featured on NBC Nightly News' Making a Difference segment. Sweet Blessings has grown by leaps and bounds, serving 163 children in 2011, 611 in 2012, 959 in 2013, and 1,100 in Sweet Blessings not only helps children feel special and loved on their special day, it helps adult professionals strengthen relationships with the children/families they serve, since it is those adults who give the cake to the children/families. Impact Statement In 2014 Sweet Blessings served 1,100 children living in 18 Kentucky Counties. In 2015 we plan to serve 1,500 children, diversify funding streams, establish a sponsorship program, and raise $85,000. 3
4 Needs Statement Our most pressing needs are as follows: Fully-funded, full-time Executive Fully-funded, part-time Production Fully-funded, part-time Administrative 100 individuals to sponsor a cake for a child each Volunteer Director of Marketing and Social Media Service Categories Primary Organization Category Human Services / Children's and Youth Services Secondary Organization Category Religion- Related / Geographic Areas Served Areas Kentucky Sweet Blessings works in Lexington and Frankfort and regularly arranges for delivery to referral sources in 10 Kentucky Counties: Franklin, Woodford, Anderson, Owen, Fayette, Lincoln, Scott, Jessamine, Bourbon, and Lee. Cakes may then be taken by the referral source to children living in other Kentucky counties. 4
5 Programs Programs Unforgettable birthday cakes for childen living in poverty or with a life threatening illness Description Sweet Blessings is a singularly focused organization and implements only one program, creating unforgettable birthday cakes for children living in poverty or with a life threatening illness. Children are referred for our services by a church, school or service provider, including hospitals, shelters, private social service agencies, etc. Sweet Blessings creates a multi-tiered or three dimensional cake which is covered in fondant and decorated for that specific child, highlighting favorite colors, hobbies, sports teams, etc. Sweet Blessings delivered the cake to the referral source who gives it to the child/family. Budget Population Served,, Program Comments CEO Comments Sweet Blessings works on a referral basis, accepting referrals from churches, schools, and service providers. There are many benefits of this model including the fact that Sweet Blessings does not have to employ a staff member to vet potential recipients. Perhaps the greatest benefit is that it allows adults who already have relationships with a child and his/her family to strengthen relationships with that family. We regularly hear anecdotal evidence from school social workers that family members with whom they have had very strained relationships suddenly have a much more positive view of the social worker and school in general after they have proved the child with a Sweet Blessings birthday cake. One of the drawbacks of this referral based model is that Sweet Blessings is constantly having to develop new relationships with referring organizations as they experience staff turnover. 5
