2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Mission of Saving Our Youth is to provide services to at-risk youth through programs designed to: stop juvenile delinquents from re-offending and going to jail; assist college bound students in low college entrance areas to attend good colleges; offer neighborhood assistance through a neighborhood watch program. The single, most important key to success is self love appreciation for yourself.liking who you are.enjoying you. Our mission is to help youth realize and appreciate who they are so they can realize their goals in life. Who you think you are determines your reality. If you have self-worth, self-love and self-appreciation, your reality will be a success. We aim to help youth understand their worth and create their successful reality through two different programs: our juvenile re-entry program and our higher education program. Background SOY was founded November 4, 2009 after deliberation of working with youth or homeless people. We affirmed that the youth are our future and they need help more than ever. With more and more youth growing up in single parent households, more and more drug dealers on the streets trying to introduce them to drugs, not to mention gangs trying to indoctrinate them, our youth really need our help. Jo White and Thomas Cox started this organization in the Highland Park section of Richmond where the need is great. Since inception, we've worked with youth from not only Highland Park, but other areas of the city as well. We re currently working with a grant writer to help us get funds to open up our first juvenile home to house six to eight juveniles as they go through our program to help them get on the right track to become productive citizens rather than jail inmates. Impact Accomplishments: Two students graduated high school that most likely would not have if they were not in our program. One of those students is heading to ITT Tech.We've seen an attitude transformation in three youths that suffered with sever anger management.one of our youths went from thug rap to gospel rap.26 students from John Marshall High are interested in joining our programwe now have 298 people in our community watch. Primary Goals:Recruit volunteers from VCU, University of Richmond and VUU students to help all 26 students from John Marshall that want to join the programcontinue to change the mindsets of the youths so that they can better control anger issuesincrease community watch membership to 350 Needs Mentors for Higher Education Participants: We need mentors for our Higher Education program to assist college bound students in high risk area schools to prepare for and get into good colleges. College Aid Coordinator: We need people to research grants and other financial aid available to students heading to college. You will help the students complete the proper paperwork and submit it in a timely manner.mentors for Juvenile: Become a mentor and be a big part of the solution by becoming a mentor for a Juvenile. Most of our juveniles have no father figures so they turn to the streets to be their fathers. Anger Management Councilors: Many of our juvenile have anger issues and need counseling.debate Coordinator: We need people to assist with our debates. The Juvenile Re-Entry Program (JRP) is being developed to promote social economic independence of disadvantaged youth years of age who are adjudicated and at risk for lifelong dependency. Our mission is to provide alternative homes with a comprehensive set of services designed to assist juvenile offenders in achieving a positive transition to their home community. The program will focus on providing assessment, vocational skills training, independent living training, individual and group counseling, as well as other skills needed to help stop the trend of young adults going from juvenile detention to jail. We will also use outsourced programs to assist in areas such as remedial education, GED preparation, substance abuse services, work experience and job placement. 2

3 Board Chair Statement Saving Our Youth Virginia s service is a value to the community. We ve taken youth off the street and helped to make them productive young men and woman. In a high crime, low income area, it s hard to break youth away from the peer pressure of doing the wrong thing. By offering them alternative programs to keep them involved in positive activities, we can keep them out of the grasp of drug dealers and gangs. As a person born and raised in the city of Newark, N.J. where the crime is overwhelming, I was able to keep my daughter off the streets and out of the criminal scene. She s now a medical doctor specializing in infectious diseases. I want to see the same for the youth in our program. 4 Programs Programs Higher Education Description "Putting meaning to No Child Left Behind." The Higher Education program is geared toward helping promising high school students from underresourced backgrounds to reach their goals of achieving degrees in law, medicine and politics. We offer the academic enhancements, life skills and social support needed to succeed in 4-8 years of college. We chose those three fields because there is a disproportionate number of minorities in those fields. Approximately 44% of the population of the United States is made up of minorities, with 11% of those being African American. Yet, only 10% of all attorneys in the U.S. are minorities. Very disproportionately low numbers hold true in the medical and political fields as well. Minority students are far more likely to become nurses, but not doctors; paralegals but not attorneys; governor's aids but not governors or senators. These students are left behind because they have economic and mental disadvantages. By mental disadvantage, I don t mean that they are illiterate. I mean that due to disadvantaged environments, they don t aim for the higher education because they simply don t believe they can do it. But we ll show them that they can. The SOY program will supply these students with community engagement, test preparation and academic enrichment so that students not only get to college, but they graduate from college. Community engagement includes mentorship with professionals in the field the student is entering. What better mental stimulus could there be for a student interested in law than for her/him to be mentored by a lawyer? Our mission is to provide alternative homes with a comprehensive set of services designed to assist juvenile offenders in achieving and maintaining a positive transition to their home community. The program will focus on providing assessment, vocational skills training, independent living training, individual and group counseling, as well as other skills needed to help stop the trend of young adults going from juvenile detention or jail, but rather become productive citizens for the communities. 5 Juvenile Re-entry (continued) Description When individuals enter the positive re-entry program, they meet with a Juvenile Case Manager to establish a unique customized program, based on their needs in the following areas: Counselor meetings Mandatory counselor meetings, one hour per day Mon-Fri. Mandatory group meeting once a week. Anger Management For those that have problems with controlling their anger, anger management counselor meetings are mandatory. Education Those who have not graduated from high school will be set up to finish school or get a GED.Mental Health Care Adjudicated youth with mental health problems are at an overwhelming risk of re-offending once they return to their home environments. Those that have been diagnosed with mental or emotional disorders will have routine scheduled meetings with therapists and other medical services to help them grow mentally. Nutrition counseling will be mandatory. They will receive proper clothing to attend business affairs, which we will set up twice a month. There may be meetings with companies that we hope will employ some of them in the future, college lectures, etc. Set the participants up with personal mentors. This mentor will help with some of the above items such as help them get their drivers license, class work tutoring, restoration dialog, etc. Restorative Justice Help them correct their wrongs by facing the people that they have hurt. These do not have to be face-to-face interactions, it can be letters or telephone conversations, and only with the consent of the victims. This will not only help to make the ex-offender understand how wrong their actions were, but, it could also help to bring closure for the victims. Exercise Physical activities are as important as mental activities. Therefore, exercise activities at a local gym will be available. Budget $0.00 5
