2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission SAFPAW has a dual mission; that of partnering with those who are homeless & those who are housed but live at or below the poverty level and their companion animals. For the animals our most critical program is our weekly Spay/Neuter transport that is free of charge to those we serve. We pick up all over Nashville, and bring each animal back fixed, completely vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas, and with a bag of pet food plus the paperwork & Rabies tag. We also assist with yearly vaccines plus minor veterinary emergencies, pet food, collars & leashes plus food/water bowls. For the people we assist our main program is Perian's Place, our recovery house for women. Currently we house 3, however this year we will be moving (with your financial help!) from our current location to a larger house in the Madison area. Our current Perian's Place is paid for, so your donations will allow us to sell this place and put the proceeds from the sale of our current place, plus your donations, into a place that will help even more women. Perian's Place also fosters animals surrendered to us, from our care they are fixed & vaccinated and then enter into the adoption program of one of our rescue partners. The women living at Perian's Place are in charge of their care. Women live here for up to 2 years, rent free for the first 2 months. After that rent is only $50 a month. They must either work part time or be on disability, and also work on their recovery, attend our classes, and work towards permanent housing. We also assist anyone homeless in Davidson County to recover their 3 forms of ID; State ID, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate. Background SAFPAW was the 1st animal welfare organization to bring a spay/neuter clinic run by an Animal Welfare group to our Davidson County. We introduced the concept of animal welfare groups owning & operating spay/neuter clinics to Nashville. In addition, we were the 1st agency to go into Tent City, Nashville's oldest & largest homeless encampment in order to help both the animals and the people living there. SAFPAW believes in a holistic approach to each family seeking our help. That family is the sum of its members, both the animals and the humans making up its whole. We are currently the only agency in Davidson County that serves both animals and people in this capacity. 2

3 Impact SAFPAW has officially launched Perian's Place, and we are currently housing 3 women in recovery. We offer a safe place for women where they can live in a home, and work towards a place of their own. We still work to keep those still living in homeless camps alive through the supplies we take out monthly, more often when weather is extremely cold or hot. We have also increased the number of people that we assist in obtaining their 3 necessary forms of ID; their State ID, Social Security Card and their Birth Certificate. For animals, our weekly Spay/Neuter & Veterinary Care Transport that is free to those we serve is still going strong after 16 years. This transport provides not only spay/neuter but also vaccinations, deworm, and treatment for fleas. They are returned with a bag of pet food. In addition we assist those we serve with keeping their companion animals current on their yearly vaccinations plus necessary items such as leashes, collars, food/water bowls, crates and outdoor shelters. Our primary goal for this year is to sell our current Perian's Place and move to a larger home where we can serve more women. We will also continue to grow with the number of surrendered animals that we can foster, fix and move into the adoption program of one of our rescue partners. The women living at Perian's Place take charge of the fostering, giving these animals another chance even as they receive the same! Perian's Place will continue to grow, offering a place to live that is rent free for 2 months, after that only $50 a month, a place to live for up to 2 years, with a part time job (unless they are on disability) while staying there a requirement in addition to continuing on with recovery & life skills classes offered as well. Throughout 2017, we will be looking for houses in the Madison area that will allow for Perian's Place to grow. The sale of our current place will go towards the purchase of a new place, your donations will allow us to purchase a bigger home plus go towards making it not only the best Recovery Place it can be but also a sanctuary for the animals we will be fostering. Needs 1. Experienced board members willing to roll up their sleeves and help us with ongoing fund raising. 2. Experienced board members that know how to promote an organization. 3. Volunteers that can take on a task or even an entire program and make it their own. 4. Volunteers who are willing to make deliveries of pet food or food boxes. 5. A volunteer(s) who can take on projects such as the transport to and from of dogs (or cats) that need to be groomed. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer You may also send tax-deductible donations to SAFPAW, P. O. 4 We serve Nashville, Davidson county. Board Chair Statement The biggest challenge that SAFPAW faces as we grow is how to keep up with the need presented to us. We have got to expand our reach to more donors and more foundations. I believe that SAFPAW is a most unique grassroots organization with our 1-on-1 approach. We seek out those that are falling through the cracks, those who are invisible. I know that how we are carrying out our mission is working because those we help refer others experiencing homelessness to us. They refer people & their pets to us. When I go into a camp and hear someone explaining to someone that their pet should be fixed, and that they need to call Miss Laurie, when I hear what I said to them in the past repeated to someone new I know that my efforts to educate are working. When an agency calls us to tap into our expertise, I know that we have the respect of our peers. Yet as I always say, without a solid financial base all the good intentions in the world are little more than words on paper. We can hit the streets and care, but to make a difference takes donations. So in 2017 we will research more foundations, write more grants, and introduce ourselves to more donors who had not yet met our amazingly unique organization. CEO Statement SAFPAW is truly an agency in the trenches. We believe that you cannot truly live your mission unless you know who you are helping. Our mission is to serve, help and change the lives of the homeless animals and people we serve. People in poverty and their pets. So we go to them, we seek them out. We believe in working from the ground up in order to help. In helping the pets we believe first of all they need to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and dewormed. Then they need an appropriate diet and basic pet care needs. As for the people we serve, ultimately they need a place to call home. But you have to start at the beginning. They must have all of their ID (birth certificate, SS card & state ID or TDL). Without ID they can receive no services at all. Then if they are homeless due to mental illness or addictions, this must be addressed. The goal is not to solve all of their issues, but rather to introduce them to the resources they need to begin climbing out of homelessness so that they are not being set-up to just fail again. Then we work on helping them with that climb off of the streets, along with all of those resources. 4

5 Programs Programs Homeless Pet Owner Outreach Description We provide pet care for homeless pet owners as well as pet owners housed but living in poverty. This includes spay/neuter, basic veterinary care, pet food and other necessary pet supplies. SAFPAW runs a weekly spay/neuter transport, and we have for 16 years. We go to homeless camps, homeless hotels, subsidized housing (MDHA) and the streets to meet pet owners and pick their animal up early in the morning, dropping them off at our veterinary partner, Animal House, then bringing them back that early evening with their paperwork and a bag of pet food. This is one of our most sought after programs, and stays full each week. Budget 32,500 Population Served Homeless,, 5

6 Helping animals, helping people. Description SAFPAW has opened Perian's Place, a Recovery House for women off the streets and who have completed detox & rehab. Here they can live for up to 2 years, rent free for 2 months and then only $50 a month. They must work at least part time or be on disability. We also house foster animals that have been surrendered to SAFPAW, getting them ready to join one of our animal adoption partners, so the women care for those animals while they are in our care as part of their house duties. In addition, these 2 years are to serve as a home they are safe in, sober in, and they attend recovery classes while living with us. They also attend our Financial and Life in Recovery Classes. Budget 50,000 In addition we also continue to help anyone homeless to recover their 3 forms of ID; State ID, Social Security card and Birth Certificate. And we provide necessary supplies to people in camps & on the streets. Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Animal-Related, General/Other Veterinary Services At-Risk Populations, Adults, Families Our programs will result in fewer animals born in the areas we serve, and more animals vetted and properly cared for in those areas. Other programs we offer will result in people coming off the streets that just did not fit into the criteria of larger agencies. And by working with a group previously ignored, homeless pet owners, we will be able to address both the areas of pet overpopulation, pet abandonment & homelessness among people that fit into the niche served by SAFPAW. So many of our homeless and their pets hide, and when we fail to seek them out we ignore a major source of our pet overpopulation numbers. They are also the most in need of our resources and most in need of pet care education. By making sure their pets are fixed and vetted, and by helping those falling through the cracks leave homelessness behind we will go a long way in addressing what has been ignored for so long. Those who are not found do not cease to exist simply because we do not look for them. We cannot end pet overpopulation in Davidson County as long as we fail this group. Reports by Animal control officers in the areas we serve indicate to us that our pet outreach is working, especially when someone is referred to us by police or animal control. When those we serve refer others to us, then we know that how we approach our outreach is successful. And when we go into a homeless camp, a homeless hotel or other areas frequented by those described in our mission and find the animals fixed then we see our impact firsthand. CEO Comments Our biggest challenge is educating our donors as to the scope of our mission, and the need that is not only addressed by SAFPAW, but is served so well by our programs and our approach. I would love for people to fully understand how effective we are in the field, and how many animals and people have been served by SAFPAW. Our mission is very unique, so it is not always easily understood. No one else serves animals and people in the way that we do, and while our impact is felt by those on the streets that we serve, it is not yet easily understood by those whose donations could increase the outreach ability of our organization. With the help of Giving Matters and the Community Foundation, the unique programs & mission of SAFPAW are becoming much better 6

For a small, grassroots group this is always a challenge. By our relationship with the Community Foundation we seek to expand our circle so that potential donors will have an opportunity to know who we are and what it is that we do. 9

11 CEO Comments The challenge to SAFPAW, as with all small non-profits, is to get and keep your name in front of those who would become major donors. Working on a board that has experienced members who can address this on a continuing basis and help us grow is an ongoing goal. 11

We are set to sell our current property, Perian's Place, a Recovery Home, that was fully paid for by a private donor. It has significantly increased in value. We seek to expand the number of women we can house up to 5. In addition we seek to continue to foster animals surrendered to SAFPAW by those we serve, so we can get them paired with one of our rescue partners. This new house will be fully paid for when we move in. 13

14 In addition we are seeking to add board members who are experienced in fund raising and promoting a nonprofit that is as unique as SAFPAW, yet at times one where our dual mission is sometimes hard to understand. Our funding has, at times, been up and down but we are setting 2017 in place to be one that sets us on a more professional path where our finances will be more upward in growth. We welcome any experienced professionals with a desire to work hard as a board member to contact us at safpawnashville@gmail.com. Our grant writing will continue, only more aggressive this year. In addition we have a consultant who is working with us on a pro bono basis for the year who is helping our fund raising and our presence to greatly increase. She launched her "debut" with us with her Holiday Card and it raised (in short order) over $3,000. We are looking forward to seeing what she can do in She is also consulting with us on board members from the community. GivingMatters.com Financial Comments Financial figures taken from Form 990.
