2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of Greater Bluffton Jasper County Volunteers In Medicine is to provide free medical care in a compassionate and professional manner to the uninsured of Greater Bluffton and Jasper County with an emphasis on preventative medicine and health education. Background As a member of the Volunteers In Medicine Institute, we comply with their proven medical standards and follow their "Culture of Caring" which treats patients, volunteers and staff with the highest standards of dignity and respect. Impact Reduce the number of patients going to the local emergency rooms for health care. Providing a free medical home for the uninsured to avoid serious health problems resulting in loss of work days or school days. Needs 1. Stable financial base for operating expenses. 2. Financial base to pay for referrals to other health care providers. 3. Keeping our medical equipment up to date. 4. Recruiting and keeping qualified medical professionals. 5. Making potential patrons aware of our services. 2

3 CEO/Executive Director Statement Services at our clinic are provided by a staff of caring and compassionate volunteers. These volunteers include administrative staff, nurses, doctors, translators, grant writers, fundraisers, program coordinators, media specialists and university interns. Through fundraisers and some private donations, the clinic is able to support one full time executive director, a part time medical director, a part time nurse manager and a part time office manager.. Together a total of 100 people work to fulfill our mission of providing free medical care in a professional and compassionate manner to the uninsured of greater Bluffton and Jasper County with an emphasis on preventative care and health education. If necessary our clients may be referred to area health care providers for comprehensive hearing tests, neurological exams, CT scans, outpatient surgeries, gastroenterology services, dermatology consults, and echo exams. We negotiate reduced rates and pay for services provided. The clinic is fully equipped with gynecological supplies, diabetic needs and pharmaceutical supplies. Thanks to a grant from Palmetto Electric Trust we now have a clinic in Ridgeland. This clinic has a state-of-the-art ophthalmology exam room. Recently BJVIM has collaborated with MUSC to bring a diabetic telehealth program to our patients. Medical records are maintained in Practice Fusion, a free electronic medical records software program and E- prescribing will soon be implemented saving time for the doctors, patients and pharmacies and more cost effective on our budget! Finances for our organization are provided by Board fundraising events and through grants. Grants are written by a volunteer team. The clinic is governed by a fourteen member Board of Directors who meet every other month and oversee the clinic program, help to raise funds, monitor the budget, and recruit doctors. The Board is chosen to represent a cross section of our community. The Bluffton Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine is a member of the South Carolina Free Clinic Association, the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, Health Access of the Low Country, the Hilton Head/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. Through our design and mission we are also a member of the Volunteers in Medicine Alliance, a national organization of 100 clinics. The Bluffton Jasper Volunteers in Medicine is here to provide the best possible care to our patients through the tireless efforts of our volunteers! 3

4 Board Chair Statement I m very excited about the growing opportunities to expand our clinic and to better serve our communities healthcare needs. In the short, five year history of BJVIM, we have grown our non-profit medical practice to over three thousand patients, supported by over one hundred dedicated, local volunteers. However, the need for quality healthcare in our most rural and poorest communities continues to be our critical challenge. Today, thousands of our residents do not have health insurance, lack resources to pay for medical treatment or do not have a mode of transportation to travel to our clinic. Driven by a shared sense of urgency, our organization is committed to finding solutions that enhance the delivery and streamline the access to quality healthcare for everyone. Today, these many challenges are being addressed by our Board of Directors. However, we understand that the needed solutions will ultimately come from a much larger, collective and collaborative partnership with our community leaders, private businesses, local churches, sister non-profits and our donors and supporting foundations. Similarly, the total resources required to provide free, high quality healthcare to our own uninsured is enormous and continues to grow. The good news is, the BJVIM organization, as a whole, is constantly evolving and growing into a world class non-profit. By continuing to recruit highly experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers that share our passion, we become stronger and more able to complete our mission. I became a volunteer to help lead our talent and to leverage their collective skills and vital know-how and to focus this energy into serving our neighbors in need. Though we are still in our infancy, I am overwhelmingly confident that we will make significant progress in our infrastructure, organizational development, strategic plan and our messaging over the next few years. Collectively, this will enable our organization to expand both our clinical and educational services and to establish a physical presence in our most under served communities. At BJVIM, we re zealous about healthcare, but more importantly, we re passionate about our patients and the health and well being of our community. We have been able to collaborate with local dentists who provide services at a reduced rate to the clinic.
