2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Since 1985, the Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City has remained dedicated to making dreams come true for the critically and chronically ill children of our area. As a 100 percent volunteer organization, granting dreams is our mission, smiling children is our vision. And in more than two decades, our devoted volunteers and generous business supporters have created thousands of smiles. We are proud to say that all the funds raised or donated to the Greater Kansas City chapter of the Dream Factory remain right here, granting the dreams of deserving children in our community. Unique aspects of our organization are the ongoing relationships and events we maintain with our dream families. Once a child is granted a dream by the Dream Factory, they are part of our family forever. We maintain an ongoing connection with our dream kids with an annual special event for every season. It s one more way for us to stay in touch and continue that valuable support network between our volunteers and the dream families. Background Statement The Dream Factory was founded nationally in 1980 by Charles Henault of Hopkinsville, Kentucky after he and his friends provided a trip to Disneyworld for a young girl dying of leukemia. It was to be the first of thousands of dreams to come true for chronically and seriously ill children in the United States. The Greater Kansas City Chapter of The Dream Factory was formed in January, 1985 with a $250 grant from the Optimist Club. Our cofounder Larry Moore, long-time news anchor for local news station KMBC-TV 9, continues today as the Kansas City Dream Factory's dedicated spokesperson. Since 1985, thousands of dreams have been granted to children ages 3 to from shopping sprees, trips to Disneyworld, concert tickets, computers, new pets, meetings with sports heroes and movie stars -- allowing these special children to dream big, find hope and to take their minds off their overwhelming day-to-day medical conditions. Impact Statement Accomplishments in 2014: Granted over 140 dreams to area children in the last 2 years.hosted four special events for all past & present dream recipients and families, including Royals Day at the K, Fishing for Dreams, Family Picnic and Movie NightMaintained relationship with KMBC-TV 9, including weekly dream feature on Fridays at 5:00 Remained all volunteer organization, no paid staff in KC Chapter Goals for 2015: Grant more than 80 dreams to area childrencontinue four annual special events for dream familiescontinue relationship with KMBC-TV 9 Increase in-kind donations for dreamsincrease external fundraising opportunitiesincrease annual gala fundraiser attendance and amount of funds raised with celebrity keynote speaker and change in event format Remain all volunteer organization with no paid staff in KC chapter Needs Statement Funding Volunteers Referrals of children with dream needs In-kind support from corporate suppliers, especially airlines, hotels, other travel-related industry providerscommunity awareness 2
3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement As we begin the new year, we are faced with challenges similar to all charitable organizations. Expenses, the cost of dreams for sick kids, are up and contributions from people who want to help us are down. To fulfill the children's dreams we've projected for the next 12 months will cost more than $400,000, a large amount to be raised by volunteers. So anyone who sees or hears of someone wanting to help, we'd certainly welcome them with open arms. We have a wonderful message to convey in the community. We are all volunteers so all of the money donated to the Dream Factory goes to the children. We are also media partners with KMBC-TV, Channel 9, a relationship that has existed almost since the first dream was granted in Since that time the volunteers of the Dream Factory have fulfilled the dream requests of more than 4,500 children in our Kansas City area between the ages of three and 18 who have life-altering illnesses or disabilities. Those dreams run the gamut of a child's imagination, from trips to Disneyworld to backyard playground equipment to meeting famous people. Because we are media partners with Channel 9, I spotlight the children who receive dreams on the KMBC Nine News at 5 each Friday. During the Royals season, we spotlight children who get to go to Royals games each Friday night on the 10 p.m. news those Friday nights. During the Chiefs season, we spotlight children who go to the Chiefs games each Monday night at 6. That partnership helps us get our message out to the community. And the community has truly responded. Since we founded the Dream Factory in 1985, we have never had to turn down a child because of lack of funds and I sincerely hope that will always be the case. Sincerely Yours, Larry Moore, Dream Factory Volunteer Spokesperson KMBC-TV 9 News Service Categories Patient & Family Support Health Support Areas of Service Areas Served Areas MO - Jackson County MO - Clay County MO - Platte County KS - Wyandotte County KS - Johnson County MO - Eastern Jackson Co MO - Jackson County Urban Core KS - Wyandotte County Urban Core 3
4 Programs Programs Granting Dreams Description Category Population Served Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Our program is strictly about granting dreams to children who meet the following criteria: Ages 3-18; Have a serious or chronic illness as determined by their physician Have not received a dream, wish, or gift from other wish granting organization; andthe dream must be the child's, not that of his or her parents or another concerned party. Human Services, General/Other Children Only (5-14 years), People/Families of People with Health Conditions, The child experiences happinessthe child feels good about themselvesthe child lives out their dream That every child in Kansas City, who suffers from a serious or chronic illness, will have the opportunity to experience a dream of theirs. We monitor our success by how many dreams we grant and from personal feedback from dream makers and the children and the families we serve. Patrick Gratton had his dream come true some 11 years ago when he got to fly over Kansas City and see his hometown from the air before having a painful bone marrow transplant at UCLA. "I still remember that cold February morning," Patrick told KMBC-TV's Larry Moore in an interview. "I remember the snowfall, I remember seeing Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium from the air. I remember looking out from that helicopter." Businessman Del Dunmire loaned his chopper to The Dream Factory to make Patrick's dream come true. His trip in the skies over Kansas City remains one of the most memorable dreams fulfilled by the Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City in its more than 15 years of granting wishes. "I've never been hugged any tighter than by that little boy when we got off the helicopter at Downtown Airport," Moore said. "He was truly excited and I know it made a big difference in his attitude as he went off to UCLA Medical Center for the transplant procedure." CEO Comments To ensure we follow our vision to make children smile, provide Dreams to children with life-altering illnesses and build relationships with these children and their families through special events and other ongoing programs. 4
