2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Background Komen s mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever is carried out on two levels: the national organization and the Affiliate network. The national organization is solely responsible for granting and managing research grants. Second only to the U.S. government, Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world, having invested more than $804 million in research. Komen-funded research has laid the groundwork for many promising treatments tamoxifen, arimidex, and herceptin as well as the discovery of the gene indicators BRCA1 and BRCA2 for inherited forms of breast cancer. Komen s research investments have touched virtually every major advance in breast cancer science. The 117 U.S. Affiliates of Susan G. Komen are responsible for studying the state of breast cancer in their local communities and identifying disparities in accessing breast health services. Each Affiliate raises money and grants it to local organizations to close the gaps in health care. Supporting Komen Central Virginia is an investment in your community. Up to seventy-five cents of every dollar we raise stays in the local community to fund breast cancer education, treatment, and screening. The remaining twenty-five cents goes into a pool to fund research grants at the national level. Impact Since its creation in 1998, the Komen Central Virginia Virginia has raised over $7.8 million for both local programs and Komen s National Research Grant Program. Of that, more than $5.8 million has funded local community grants. And, more than $1.9 million has funded research grants at the national level. The Komen Central VA Affiliate is supported by hundreds of volunteers. This enables the Affiliate to keep its administrative costs as low as possible and allows the organization to fund many worthy programs that provide assistance to underserved women. Komen is Central VA's only breast cancer organization committed to funding free services and education for every step of the breast cancer journey. One in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime is a very well-known statistic, but it doesn t begin to convey the heartbreaking effect of this disease on women, men, and families. While we are proud of our history of community commitment, we recognize that so much more needs to be done. We know the need is very real because we continue to receive more qualified requests for support than we have the funds to fill. Just this year, we received twenty-five requests to fund over $1 million in community grant programs, and were only able to meet about thirty-four percent of the need. Our goal is to continually be able to fully fund all qualified grant requests. With your help, we will target local grant programs that: Pay for mammograms for women who cannot afford them. Educate women, particularly those who are medically underserved, about the importance of breast selfawareness, professional screening, and mammograms. Focus on treatment support as well as providing easier access to existing treatment resources for women with breast cancer. 2

4 Programs Programs Grants Description We are a funding organization that provides grants to central Virginia organizations that deliver breast health education, screening, and treatment services to primarily uninsured and underinsured women. Examples of what our funding could provide include: mammograms and other necessary diagnostic screenings; transportation to and from treatment; educational programs which increase appropriate breast health and screening; staff to support these programs; and supplies needed by women undergoing treatment. Budget $600, Education Description We provide several educational programs each year to the general public, about increasing awareness about breast health. In addition, we provide the community with thousands of educational materials regarding breast cancer and support for those going through the disease. We also provide volunteer breast health educators to staff information tables or speak at hundreds of community venues - such as health fairs, places of worship, schools and fundraising events. Budget $0.00 Survivorship Description Each year, we present a Survivor Celebration which provides breast cancer survivors at all stages the opportunity to enjoy fellowship, a meal, and an educational program. The past eight events were held at The Jefferson Hotel and included a prominent author as speaker. Budget $0.00 Race for the Cure Description The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series is Komen s signature event. It is the world s largest and most successful fundraising and education event for breast cancer ever created. The event helps us provide significant funds and bring awareness about breast cancer to our local community. It helps us save lives and provide support to those in need. Budget $0.00 The Komen Central Virginia Race is consistently one of our area s favorite charity run/walks, attracting more than 5,000 participants, 400 volunteers, and a number of corporate and community sponsors. Funds raised from the Race provide the support necessary to fund breast cancer education, as well as screening, and treatment initiatives throughout our service area for those in need. 4

As a grassroots organization, earlier boards were also the leaders of every aspect of the work of the organization. At this point, we have added staff to provide operational leadership and are working toward building strong committees with members that are comprised of both board and general volunteers to allow the board to focus primarily on the responsibilities of governance. We are seeking better ways to develop our board and our board recruitment to this end. 6

8 advocate through public policy on behalf of breast health. In addition, we are a leading partner in Paint it Pink Petersburg, a grassroots, breast health coalition in the Petersburg. We also often work with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, the Virginia Department of Health Every Woman's Life Program, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia.
