In order to provide free grief support groups to children and families, Calm Waters relies on the support of our community via corporations, foundations, individuals and fundraising events. Volunteer opportunities include: Grief Group Facilitators Divorce Group Facilitators In-Office Administrative Support Event Volunteer Statements Mission Calm Waters provides free grief support services for children and families on their grief journey caused by death, divorce or other significant loss. Background Calm Waters (CW) was founded in 1992, by a Jason Woodruff, a nine-year old boy whose father had just died and his mother, in partnership with the Baptist Medical Center Outpatient Counseling Department. In 1999, CW achieved 501(c)(3) status. In FY16, CW served approximately 2,200 children, youth and adults whose lives were affected by death, divorce, and other major grief issues, including incarceration, deployment, deportation and foster care. CW provides a variety of services, including: Free Center-Based Grief and Divorce Support Groups Groups are offered to children ages 3 18 years of age and their parents/guardians. An adults only group, for those years old, is hosted on an as needed basis. Because children s abilities to understand and express feelings vary with age, children meet in developmentally-appropriate groups. Led by trained facilitators, participants are guided through a curriculum filled with art and play activities and discussions aimed at developing healthy coping skills. Adults find support as they meet with other adults, share their concerns and learn from each other how to help themselves and their children through turbulent times. Young adults find peer support in their own group. Groups are curriculum-based, and promote healing in a safe, supportive environment. Divorce groups are held weekly for eight weeks, while grief groups are ongoing. All children who attend CW support groups must be accompanied by at least one adult. School-Based Support Groups contain similar components as Center-Based Support Groups but serve students in schools (Pre-k through 12th grade). A wide variety of grief issues are addressed, including incarceration, deportation or the deployment of a loved one, foster care issues and community disasters. Parenting Through Divorce Seminars focus on keeping children out of the middle of divorce. Seminars are four hours and a small fee is charged. These seminars are court mandated and approved. School-Counselor and Educator Grief Workshops, Volunteer and Community Grief Training and Crisis Interventions are also provided by CW staff and volunteers. 2

3 Impact For 25 years, Calm Waters Center for Children and Families (CW) has provided free grief services in the Greater Oklahoma City Metro area, focusing on children's grief. In 1992, CW provided grief support groups to 47 children and their parents. Since the agency's inception, more than 35,000 individuals have received CW services. CW utilizes 125+ volunteers annually. Volunteers are the backbone of the agency. Volunteers are extremely dedicated and devoted to helping grieving children and families by facilitating small support groups for 8-12 weeks. Our amazing volunteers also help with various fundraising and/or special events. In FY17, CW provided direct services to more than 2,500 individuals annually, including approximately 1,600 students in 22 public school systems within the metro area. Students (Pre-K through 12th grade) participate in CW's School-Based Support Groups during school hours. They attend groups approximately one hour per week. Family issues such as: death, divorce, foster or adoptive care, deployment, incarceration or deportation of a parent or guardian as well as community disasters (such as the 2013 May tornadoes) are the types of family loss issues facing these students. Needs Calm Waters' (CW) Center-Based Grief Support Groups are free to participants. However, the cost to CW per Center-Based participant is approximately $350 per person. For a student to attend School-Based Groups, the cost is approximately $125 per student. CW Board of Directors continues to understand the turmoil that a death or divorce can cause a family and therefore; the agency does not charge participants for attending support groups. Divorce can cause financial difficulty, as well as the death of a family member. Donations are needed to continue our free services. CW is in need of volunteers to facilitate groups. Volunteer Training is held periodically through-out the year. Please call CW at for dates of upcoming Volunteer Training. A volunteer facilitator must attend training in order to co-facilitate support groups. CEO/Executive Director Statement Calm Waters Center for Children and Families (CW) focuses on children's grief, specifically death, divorce or other family loss issues. CW does not provide free one-on-one counseling but we do provide free Grief Support Groups. The agency began as a grief center for children but expanded to include divorce support in The agency is non-faith based and provides free Center-Based Groups for families affected by the death or loss of a loved one at CW's Center as well as, our Edmond site at Clegern Elementary. Children (3-18 years) and their parent or guardian are invited to participate free of charge. An application is required as well as an intake for all members of the family who will attend. Grief Groups are 12 weeks in length and Divorce Support Groups are 8 weeks in length. Knowing that many families are unable to attend CW Center-Based evening groups, School- Based groups are provided to metro area schools. School-Based Groups address death and divorce as well as additional loss issues such as: foster and/or adoptive services, deployment, deportation or incarceration of a parent or guardian, as well as community disasters. School-Based Groups meet during school hours. Presently, Calm Waters provides free School-Based Groups to more than 150 schools in 22 public school systems. Board Chair Statement Calm Waters (CW) is a unique organization because our mission trancends socioeconomic status, race and religion. Loss affects every single person at some point. Grief will affect each and every one of us. None of us are immune to grief and we all handle it in different ways but it is so important to know that you are not alone. I serve as the board chairman for this wonderful organization to give support to the thousands who need to know that they are not alone in their journey with grief. Calm Waters is experiencing an exciting time of growth and transformation. We are expanding services in the Edmond area as a prototype that we would like to replicate in other communities around the Oklahoma City Metro. This will allow us to strategically plan smart growth in order to better serve our community. We are extremely excited about the experience and ideas our new members have brought to the organization. I believe the organization is at a turning point with a very bright future and I am excited to be a part of this change. Area Served Area Served 3
