2 Supporting Organization Coffee Creek Riding Center Year Founded 1976 IRS Ruling Year 1977 Registered with the Secretary of State? State Registration Expiration Mar 2019 Other ways to donate support, or volunteer Volunteers: Our program covers three semesters a year -- fall, spring and summer sessions -- and follows the same schedule as the school term. We accept both teen (age 13 and over) and adult volunteers to help with classes in each semester. Training is provided prior to start of each semester and during the semester new volunteers train in with a team of experienced volunteers. Volunteers work directly with the students in classes assisting them in participating in specially designed games and exercises. Prior to the class volunteers help get the horses groomed and tacked up for class and prepare the games for the day. Contact us at coffeecreekriding@sbcglobal.net or call Statements Mission To help children with disabilities gain strength, coordination, balance and self image utilizing the horse as a motivator in therapeutic riding classes. Background Coffee Creek Riding Center is the realization of a dream of Mrs. Lucille Fancey, co-founder with her daughter Joy Milligan Director of the program. She taught English riding and jumping for 38 years and served as Master of the Lost Hound Fox Hunt for 32. In 1977, the center was started as the joint effort of Mrs. Fancey and her daughter, Joy Milligan who has a medical background. w in its 40th year, Coffee Creek Riding Center continues to provide "free" therapeutic horseback riding to a total of 261 students served last year with the help of 180 volunteers. The center serves approximately 180 students during the spring/fall semester and 80 during the summer session. The centers students come from both special education classes bussed in from the greater Metro Oklahoma City area and individual students brought by their parents. The program is designed as an educationally based program utilizing specifically designed games and exercises impacting students in mental, physical, emotional and self image areas. The activities provide benefits in speech, ability for phonation, core muscle strength, impacts balance and fine and gross muscle coordination as well as following directions. A wide variety of disabilities are served including autism spectrum, Downs Syndrome, mentally/learning challenged, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, hearing impaired and visually impaired. The center's facility includes an 85" X 200" indoor heated riding arena (with outdoor area as well) and is attached to a classroom complex which allows for year round classes. Our volunteers range in age from 13 through senior adults. Many of our teen volunteers have gone to choose careers in allied health fields and education including special education. 2

3 Impact As a long-time physical therapist in a public school system, I've had the privilege of accompanying the Special Education students to Coffee Creek Riding Center. Even with my experience working with handicapped children and adults, I must fight back tears when I see a great big smile spread across the face of a new student with severe physical limitations, the first time he gets to sit on a horse and ride.each student is required to greet his horse, go to the ramp, mount and ride. Usually this requires three volunteers: one to lead the horse and two to walk on either side. Saddles are not used with our little students at this stage in their training, but they ride with a large soft pad and a surcingle with two handles. Riding helmets are also required for safety.many of our little children are dependent upon others for their mobility, but when they are riding, their legs are replaced by the legs of the horse and wheelchairs are left behind. Cognitive and physical benefits occur from riding. Motor planning skills, improvement of posture and vestibular stimulation are among the physical benefits. Sensory stimulation from tactile, auditory, visual, skeletal and vestibular systems is experienced. However, the kids don't know they are stretching their hamstring and lower back extensors and stimulating their joint proprioceptors; they just thought they were leaning forward to give their horse a hug. Or that they were increasing trunk rotation, weight shifting, increasing strength and range of motion, visual tracking, and increasing self-esteem, when they were only shooting a ball through a basketball hoop. Horseback riding is something every child dreams of doing. Because of Coffee Creek, handicapped children have the opportunity for this dream to come true. Provided free by the wonderful people who volunteer their time and charitable contributions, this is a tremendous opportunity for the children and for those of us fortunate to share the experience.maxine Gunter Needs 1) Volunteers for classes throughout the week to work with the 270 students (generally utilizing about 180 volunteers per year ranging in age from 13 through adults.)2) Funds for Staff Horse Support includes : Coffee Creek has 10 horses on staff to serve the children and their expenses include (feed, vet and farrier) 3) Replacing and updating older riding equipment used with children in classes with their horses. 4) Purchasing new games utilized with the children during their riding session5) Overall general budget for operating the year round program and keeping it Free for all the participants as we have since CEO/Executive Director Statement It has been our joy and privilege to provide therapeutic riding opportunities to the community impacting children with challenges and disabilities. By many miracles, God's faithfulness to His promises, and being included as a United Way agency and a wonderful outpouring of support from the community in volunteers and finances, For the past 39 years the program has been free for every child that has participated! We have the honor of assisting families (along with all the other therapeis that their child receives), in being a part of helping that child to reach their fullest potential.
