2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of FACES is to serve and support families by helping to dissolve the stigma surrounding mental illness. Our goals are to educate the public, provide educational resources, advocate for access to services, and create a model residential center. Background FACES is a grassroots organization with an active board of directors that is involved in all aspects of the organization. Our board is made up of family members that have firsthand knowledge of the devastating affects brain disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizo-affective disorder and schizophrenia. FACES started in 2005 when a group of people who had met at a NAMI Family to Family class and become friends, decided that they needed to continue to support each other and maybe even other families that were going through the same trials, frustrations and fears that they had been navigating. Just as this idea began to take shape, Justin Myers, the son of Pat and Ed Myers, committed suicide. Justin was 20 years old and he suffered from bipolar disorder. The pain and reality of Justin s loss catapulted the group of friends to form an organization that would reach out to families that struggle each and every day with a loved one that has a brain disorder and create a place that would not only provide that family with support but education, friendship and a sense of solidarity. FACES wanted families to know that they were not alone, that there is a strong advocate fighting for them and fighting to break the stigma commonly associated with these brain disorders. FACES wanted to change the way brain disorders, these mental illnesses, were viewed and treated. The tragic loss of Justin happened 10 years ago, but the fight for understanding and acceptance of people with brain disorders and the support of their families continues. In ten years FACES has consistently offered two support groups a month, an advocacy meeting per month. FACES has also expanded its outlook and hosted two suicide prevention seminars, partnered with Community Service Boards in Chesterfield, Richmond and Henrico to advocate for better funded services, participated in community outreach programs for Gateway Homes and Central State, become involved in the planning and implementation of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for Chesterfield County Police Department and are presenters at CIT training sessions, produced a newsletter that goes out every other month to our 600 plus members and successfully holds two fundraisers a year. The original Board of Directors, those friends from a NAMI Family to Family class, are still the heart and soul of our organization. Those pioneers, Pamela Weiseman, Pat Myers, Candy Watt, Steve Watt, Debbie Tucker, Dee Edwards, Ruby Fitzgerald and the original Executive Director, Barbara Kunowsky, had the drive and the vision to make the mental health community a better place for the people it serves. Our current Board of Directors still includes several of the original Board members and they inspire us each day with their commitment, love and dedication. FACES has weathered the passing of Steve Watt, Dee Edwards and Pamela Weiseman. In their honor, and in the memory of Justin Myers, FACES remains dedicated to its mission of creating education, advocacy and services for its families and we are as passionate as ever about breaking the stigma that surrounds brain disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, schizo-affective disorder and schizophrenia. FACES also recognizes all those that have advised, supported and worked with us in our mission. We thank St. Mark s Methodist Church for their generosity in allowing us to be housed on their campus. 2

3 Impact FACES is the only entity in the Central Virginia mental health community that focuses on advocating, educating and serving families with a loved one affected by brain disorders. FACES runs bi-monthly, free and open to the public support groups. FACES conducts monthly free and open to the public advocacy meetings. Our speakers include an internationally renowned genetics researcher from VCU, a representative from Treatment Advocacy Center of Arlington, Virginia, noted local psychiatrists, a member of the Governor's Task Force on Mental Health Services and Crisis Response, members of Chesterfield CSB, physicians discussing psychotropic medications, local estate, trusts and wills attorneys regarding crafting trusts and wills to protect your loved one with a brain disorder, Chesterfield and Metro Richmond law enforcement representatives, and more. We strive to present topics from a family, a research, a legal, a government & a law enforcement point of view and we hope that our speakers will educate and will bring greater understanding and cooperation between all these entities. FACES sends out an informative newsletter every other month that conveys the latest local and national trending mental health news. FACES has participated in the planning and implementation of CIT, Crisis Intervention Training, in Chesterfield County. Members of our Board are continuously invited to present at the training sessions of law enforcement officers. FACES contributed to the ground-breaking research being done at VCU's Virginia Institute of Psychiatric and Behavior Genetics. FACES has supported other related mental health support organizations providing facilities and administrative help so they may continue their work to break the stigma of mental illness and brain disorders. FACES added one part-time employee, an executive director position in March Our goals for the upcoming year are to grow our presence in Central Virginia. Continue free and public support groups and advocacy meetings while adding yearly seminars on mental health related topics like suicide prevention and mental health education in area schools. Improve our information outreach by upgrading our newsletter and website. Start a volunteer program. FACES is a nonprofit that relies on individual donations. We encourage you to support FACES so we may continue our dedicated efforts to reach families struggling with the life altering effects of mental illness. Needs FACES would like to expand its goals of hosting annual suicide prevention seminars, beginning a volunteer program, funding for its community outreach program, funding for upkeep of FACES House, continue its partnerships with Central State and Crisis Intervention Training programs, continues it free and open to the public support groups and advocacy meetings. 5 Programs Programs Community Outreach Description FACES has several programs that we do throughout the year. Our Gateway Homes and Community Outreach Programs involve giving a gift cards from Wal-Mart to residents at Gateway Homes and to consumers that are mainstreamed in the community. The Gateway Outreach is an every other month gift of $20 and the Community Outreach is twice a year gift of $60. Budget $3, FACES monthly Community Education Meetings include securing a speaker in the area of mental health research, medical disciplines in mental health, pharmacology, mental health and law enforcement, Chesterfield Public schools, to name a few areas. Costs for our Community Education meetings include advertising for event, snacks for event and administrative time. Participation in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) with Chesterfield Mental Health and Chesterfield Police which includes materials for training session. CIT training is generally every other month. Community Forums on Suicide Prevention and Awareness. These Forums are a once a year event. They focus on educating the general public on the facts, myths and stigma of mental health and suicide. Cost includes materials for Forums such as resource lists, brochures and flyers to advertise for events, securing keynote and panel, speakers; food for event, venue for event. FACES supports Virginia Treatment Center For Children (VTCC) at VCU with a generous twice a year donation in the form of a Visa gift card. The gift card is used to purchase items for children under the age of 18 that are in treatment at VTCC such as clothing, toiletries and items for therapy sessions like craft supplies. The care packages and gift cards allow the residents to improve their environment and the gift cards allow them to make a decision and purchase something that is important to them. Residents anticipate and appreciate our care packages. It shows them that someone cares recognizes them. 5

The board participates in all programs, events and other activities of FACES. Our challenge is that FACES board is small in size and because we require 100% participation may be limiting in recruiting new members. 7

Yes 0 Comments Organization Comments FACES has been working in mental health community over 10 years and since our inception we have been solely privately funded. We are expanding our reach to include participation in a local Suicide Prevention and Awareness Coalition, CIT training and projects that require some funding. In order to address these financial challenges, we are forming partnerships with other organizations to help with the financial burden. However, we must also look to other venues such as Amazing Raise to help us reach our financial goals and thereby broaden our outreach to the community. 10
