Statements Mission HeartLine connects Oklahomans to help, hope and information - 24 hours a day. Background HeartLine, Inc. has been serving Oklahoma since 1971 and provides suicide prevention outreach programs, compassionate listening, information and referral services, and crisis intervention services. Call specialists are available around the clock answering HeartLine s various helplines, including: 2-1-1, 848-CARE, the Oklahoma Problem Gambling Helpline , and two national suicide prevention lines, SUICIDE and TALK. HeartLine staffs the state helpline in 40 counties in central and western Oklahoma, the two National Suicide Prevention Lifelines in 76 Oklahoma counties, and the Oklahoma Problem Gambling Helpline for the entire state. In fiscal year 2014, HeartLine served 198,736 Oklahomans. HeartLine s roots stem from the LifeLine telephone ministry, which originated in Sydney, Australia, in 1963 and grew to a worldwide movement by In 1967, the program arrived in the United States under the name CONTACT. By the mid-seventies, CONTACT centers were the largest provider of telephone helpline and crisis intervention services in the country. In 1971, through the hard work and dedication of the mental health and faith communities of central Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City CONTACT Center was opened. In its first year, 100 volunteers were trained, and 8,200 calls were answered. On January 1st, 2005, the organization was renamed HeartLine and charged with a new, broader mission: Connecting Oklahomans with help, hope, and information 24 hours a day. Today, HeartLine has a service area of over 3.8 million people in Oklahoma through its various programs and services and is a trusted community partner in information referral and crisis intervention. In 2011, HeartLine was accredited through the Alliance for Information & Referral Systems (AIRS). AIRS is a professional association for information and referral organizations which stipulates 27 best practice standards and assesses more than 200 distinct operational components for accreditation. The standards address all aspects of the agency, including service delivery, resource database, reports and measures, cooperative relationships, organizational requirements, and disaster preparedness. Impact HeartLine helps 200,000 Oklahomans each year, connecting them to more than 9,000 services. 2

4 Description Call specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our Call Center Help Lines include the following: HeartLine s information and referral line for health and human service needs. HeartLine answers this line for 40 counties in central and western Oklahoma 24 hours a day, seven days a week. HeartLine s database of over 3,000 partner agencies and 6,000 individual services connects Oklahomans with help, hope, and information. 848-CARE - Family Careline, offered in partnership with Family Builders. HeartLine Call Specialists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help parents in Central Oklahoma find the assistance they need to build a healthy family TALK and SUICIDE - two national suicide prevention lifelines answered in the state of Oklahoma by HeartLine Oklahoma Problem Gambling Helpline, answered for the entire state by HeartLine certified call specialists. In partnership with the Oklahoma Association for Problem and Compulsive Gambling, HeartLine brings those addicted to gambling and their families help, hope and information. 5 Suicide Prevention and Outreach Description HeartLine s suicide prevention and outreach initiative, the Healthy Education for Life Program (HELP) provides free, interactive training to increase awareness and empower students to prevent bullying and suicide among peers. Since its inception in 1997, HELP has reached over 65,000 students in the Oklahoma City metro area with its in-class presentations and seminars. HELP learning opportunities focus on dispelling the negative stigma of getting help for mental illness and suicidal tendencies, understanding the warning signs of suicide in peers, and learning how to take action so that at-risk students are identified and receive the help they need. ASK- LISTEN-TELL is the cornerstone of HELP and is a simple and easily remembered model that students can employ if they suspect a peer is depressed or suicidal. In 2008, HeartLine s HELP initiative was recognized on the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention s Suicide Prevention Resource Center Best Practices Registry. The initiative includes a 20-minute video, role playing activities, an interactive story board activity, and the cornerstone of HELP: the Ask-Listen-Tell model. HELP presentations also include a brief evaluation in which students have the opportunity to self identify as being at risk for depression or suicide. In the summer of 2011, HELP was redesigned and updated to be more interactive and relevant in light of teen bullying and unreported suicidal ideations.
