2 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Background Statement Founded by Clara Barton in 1881, the American Red Cross was granted a charter in 1905 by Congress. First Aid and safety programs began in 1909 and the water safety program was established in Since 1881, people have turned to the American Red Cross for emergency services. Today, trained and dedicated volunteers and staff are helping their neighbors across the country. Although not a government agency, the Red Cross is chartered by Congress to provide special services to members of the US Armed Forces and to disaster victims. A Bluegrass Red Cross office was established in Today, the local Red Cross remains a vital part of this community providing services to the residents and supporting efforts across the country in times of disasters. A critical component of Red Cross services is helping to build a "culture of prevention." Community preparedness educational programs assist families on how to make a plan, build a kit, get trained, and volunteer. Red Cross workers assist members of the Armed Forces and their families in emergencies. Impact Statement Led by our volunteers, we serve the community through programs that provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Our chapter assists clients in a local ten county area consisting of Bourbon, Casey, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Harrison, Jessamine, Nicholas, Powell, and Scott Counties. In addition we support and manage eight community chapters and provide services to a total of 55 counties throughout the Bluegrass Region. Recently, our chapter experienced a significant number of disasters in our area. Our volunteers and staff were deployed locally and statewide to major disaster relief operations including the West Liberty tornado and Superstorm Sandy. Needs Statement Education in Schools for CPR/FA/AED Disaster Relief. The best time to prepare for a disaster is before one happens. Volunteers Master of Disaster Program Pillowcase Project CEO/Executive Director Statement Thank you for your continued support as our mission at the Red Cross is to help prevent, prepare and respond to disasters. Without your continued support our mission would not exist. It is with your support that we can help individuals and families in a time of need. 5 Impact Impact Goals Led by our volunteers, we serve the community through programs that provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Our chapter has experienced a significant number of disasters in our area. Our volunteers and staff were deployed locally and statewide to major disaster relief operations including the West Liberty tornado and Superstorm Sandy. Our goal is to continue to support these communities so that families can continue to live the way they are used to and get back on their feet in a timely manner. Strategies Our strategies are to make more awareness. We need others to know the good that the Red Cross does and that we always are stepping in as soon as a disaster happens to alleviate suffering for families and allow the to get back on their feet quickly. We cannot do this without the help of the community through donations, volunteers and time. Capabilities We are a very strong, national organization that continues to do good work and fight for donations. We look for the good in everyone and will begin our FY15 year by opening new doors and opportunities to raise money so that we can continue to support families in a time of need. Indicators We measure our success by the number of families we provide assistance to and the amount of money that is raised to provide this assistance. We grow our organization by the people that want to get involved with the Red Cross. We are constantly recruiting volunteers to help our organization and be part of the One Red Cross. Progress We strive to make more awareness on the good that we do and provide for families in your community across the Bluegrass Region. We want to make others know that the Red Cross is always the first one to step in and assist and your dollars can help us provide that assistance. If you lost your house due to a fire or storm you would welcome the assistance and we can only provide that assitance through our donations and fundraising efforts that we strive to reach for. 5
6 Programs Programs Disaster Services Description The term disaster services encompasses many different programs which, depending on the case, might include providing shelter, food, water, clothing, emergency medical care, clean-up kits, bedding, and rental assistance to disaster victims. It also means providing free disaster preparedness training for the community. Additionally, disaster services involves training our volunteers to work with local, state, and national government agencies and to provide a coordinated response in times of disaster. The American Red Cross is the only organization chartered by Congress to provide disaster relief to ALL Americans. Population Served,, Service to the Armed Forces Description Service to the Armed Forces incorporates a variety of different programs aimed at assisting the members of our military and their families here at home in the Bluegrass. The most common service we perform is emergency messaging. This is when our staff sends a verified message to a soldier informing him or her of an emergency situation back at home such as a death or illness. Often the American Red Cross assists soldiers with logistical arrangements to ensure they can return to their families. Service to the Armed Forces might also include assisting families with financial concerns, linking service members and their families with support services, or assisting our veterans with their benefits. Population Served,, Health & Safety Description Health and Safety Training are classes taught by the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross, or one of our authorized providers, to our friends and neighbors here in the Bluegrass. The Bluegrass Chapter teaches these life-saving courses both at our offices, or at sites throughout our region. Among the classes we offer are: First Aid; Adult, Infant and Child CPR; Automated External Defibrillation (AED); Life Guarding; CPR/PR for the Professional; Pet First Aid and Babysitting Certification. Population Served,, WHEELS Description The Bluegrass Chapter s Wheels program is designed to meet the needs of local residents with disabilities by providing economical and accessible transportation throughout Fayette County. The Wheels program provides independence to riders by transporting them to work, to doctor s appointments, on errands, or even out for social occasions. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with LexTran. Population Served,, Program Comments 6
