2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Mother To Mother is a nonprofit that empowers social workers, nurses and public school teachers to request vital health, safety and wellness items for the babies and children that they serve. After twelve years of collecting and distributing baby items in Nashville, Mother To Mother has launched a new website to expand our reach. We have developed a website where social workers and teachers can post their needs for the children that they serve. MTM will have donors fund the projects and distribute the items to the low income children in our state. Background Mother To Mother was started in 2004 by Janie Busbee, with the missions to provide the basic necessities to low-income children in TN. To leverage our impact, we partner with community hospitals and organizations, including: Mercy Family Clinic, Hope Clinic, Nashville General Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, YWCA, Caring Choices, Families First, Martha O'Bryan, Safe Haven, McNeilly Center, TriStar Centennial, St. Thomas Midtown, Gateway Medical Center, Summit Hospital, Catholic Charities, First Steps, TN Department of Children's Services, Family and Children Services, Alive Monarchs, and the Ronald Mcdonald House. Mother To Mother believes that babies and children are the innocent victims of poverty. We aim to bridge the gap and provide the basic necessities that every child deserves: diapers, car seats, safe places to sleep, clothes, shoes, toys, formula, and blankets. We distribute these items when social workers notice the family struggling to provide for their child. After serious health events, parents often struggle to visit their child in the hospital due to the cost of transportation. We have recently provided two bus passes for a mom who wants to get back to work. We have provided a double stroller to a medically fragile baby leaving the hospital with a ventilator and medical equipment in the second part of the stroller! These are the realities of low income families in Nashville and Mother To Mother is fighting to help! Impact Mother To Mother has made some significant changes to our operation in order to expand to serve a greater area. We have spent the last nine months working on a website where projects can be posted to raise money for needs. This will enable Mother To Mother to expand outside of Nashville, and outside of Tennessee. In 2017, Mother To Mother has made significant strides in expanding outside of the Nashville area. We have added several hospitals to our partner organizations, including: Gateway Health Systems, Summit Hospital, Smyrna Medical Center, TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center, Saint Thomas Rutherford, TriStar Hendersonville, and Knoxville Community Action Committee. We have also been fostering our corporate partnerships, and have had six corporate campaigns to raise funds and awareness for Mother To Mother! Needs As a result of our expansion, Mother To Mother needs donations! As we apply for more grants and corporate sponsors, we really need individuals to go on our website and DONATE! Pick a project that excites you and makes you care, and donate. Then spread the word and get your friends to donate. We need weekly diaper drives to keep up with the diaper demand. Any groups that you belong to, girls night out, birthday options- get involved and do something really impactful!! Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Mother To Mother accepts donations through our website at Donors can fund specific projects, make a one time donation, make a recurring monthly donation or write a check and mail to our address. The website accepts all major credit cards as well as PayPal.Volunteer opportunities include helping with fundraising events, data entry for our donor database, writing thank you notes and general office help in our warehouse. Because we are headquartered in Nashville, we naturally serve more people from this area. As we expand outside of Nashville, we hope to have the resources to support all of Tennessee's low income children. We have recently added partner hospitals in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Hendersonville, Clarksville, and have our first in Knoxville! Board Chair Statement Mother To Mother has done so many wonderful things for mothers and children in our community over ten plus years. They provide essential items to new parents and children every day. Whether it is a safe crib for a baby, a car seat to get home safely, diapers when the mom doesn't have any way of obtaining diapers, clothes for school, or coats in the winter, I see the joy and calm that our donations make in the lives of our fellow Tennesseans. The challenges that we face are good challenges: we always need more items to distribute, more space to house our items, and more volunteers to help everything get counted and ready for distribution. Mother To Mother is applying for grants for the first time, having drop spots in popular children's places, and getting its name out to the community. Mother To Mother is growing to match the need and will continue to do so until every baby is safe, clothed, and warm. Ms. Rosemary VerHulst CEO Statement Mother To Mothers serves a significant need in our community and one that does not have a lot of other organizations to turn to. I have asked numerous social workers at the hospitals about who they have as an alternative or support for what Mother To Mother provides for their patients. The answers are always the same, they don't have any other hope for providing these babies with the essential items to keep them safe and healthy. Mothers with low income can receive WIC, which gives them formula and food stamps for cheese, bread, milk, and staples for their child. One large hole in this service is diapers. They have no access to diapers other than paying for them like anyone else does. They often lack the funds to buy in bulk, and end up paying more for their diapers than other moms. Diapers are expensive and can't be passed on or reused. This is one of our primary focuses and we hope to have more funding for diapers! We are also focused on lowering infant mortality in TN. TN is consistently ranked in the bottom five in infant mortality. The Governor has demonstrated that he intends to put the state's resources behind the problem. Mother To Mother is joining all of our partner agencies in order to aid in solving this problem. We will continue to expand our Safe Sleep Program until we can provide all of our agencies with cribs for their babies! This program will make a significant impact in the health of our newborns, helping more babies make it to their first birthday! 3
