3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The mission of the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation is to reduce cancer mortality in Kentucky and beyond by supporting innovative cancer research and treatments, education, community engagement, state-of-the-art facilities, and compassionate patient care at Markey Cancer Center. Background Statement In 1978, Ben Roach and a dedicated group of volunteers began the planning and organization to build a cancer center at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Roach established what is now called the UK Markey Cancer Foundation in recognition of the late Calumet Farm owner and philanthropist Lucille Parker Markey, whose generosity has made a significant and enduring impact on the lives of Kentuckians. With tremendous support from Lexington's thoroughbred industry, along with other businesses, civic organizations and individual donors, funds were raised to build patient care facilities where thousands of patients have come to find hope and healing in their fight against cancer. Over the past 35 years the Markey Cancer Foundation has raised more than $75 million for facilities, research, treatment, education and patient support for UK's Markey Cancer Center. Impact Statement Accomplishment: Markey Cancer Center NCI DesignationIn 2013, the Markey Cancer Center received NCI (National Cancer Institute) designation, ranking it among the Nation's elite Cancer Center's and enabling it to receive additional research funding and increased access to clinical trials for patients. The Markey Cancer Foundation continues to raise support for much needed research and recruitment funds to ensure that Markey maintains this important designation. Advances in Metabolomic Research and EtiologyThe Markey Cancer Foundation supported the recruitment of four of the leading researchers in the nation for the study how cancer metabolizes in the body and what "feeds" cancer cells causing them to spread. Through their innovative work, these researchers hope to turn off the mechanisms that cause cancer to spread in the body. Rebranding the Markey Cancer Foundation: Over the past year, the Markey Cancer Foundation rebranded itself to the "University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation" to further solidify it's mission focused on providing support to UK's Markey Cancer Center. The organization has taken on new initiatives including the Cathy Wolterman Coop Patient Support Fund, increased support for cancer screenings with a focus on rural Kentucky counties and a campaign to build a new cancer patient floor in UK's new hospital. Lung Cancer Surviorship Grant: UK Researchers and Markey Cancer Foundation are pleased to announce a $7.2 million initiative funded by the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation aimed at improving lung cancer survivorship in Kentucky. This program will include increased lung cancer screenings and education for care givers and patients. MCF has supported a unique crowd-funding project called Ironcology.net along with Radiation Oncologist Dr. Jonathan Feddock. The goal of this project is to raise funds for a new Brachytherapy suite to treat breast, prostate, head, brain and neck cancers. Needs Statement The Markey Cancer Foundation's Top Five Needs for 2015: - Increased Funding for Research & Recruitment of leading physicians and physician/scientists for Markey Cancer Center.- Event Sponsors for the Markey Golf Classic, Concert on the Lawn at Keeneland and The Betsy "Jump for the Cure" equine show jumping event at Kentucky Horse Park.- Funds to support the building of a state-of-the-art cancer patient floor at UK Chandler Hospital- Funding to expand Markey's Cancer Prevention and Control programs, including cancer screenings across the state.- In-Kind Donations for Events such as auction items and media sponsorships. 3

4 CEO/Executive Director Statement As the President and CEO of UK's Markey Cancer Foundation, I have the privilege of working alongside some of the nation's top physicians and scientists who are united in the common cause of conquering cancer in the Commonwealth. Kentucky has the highest incidence and death rate of cancer overall in the United States. It is the mission of the UK Markey Cancer Foundation to change that dismal statistic. With our recent National Cancer Institute designation and increased opportunities for research, access to clinical trials, and better treatments, we will measure our success by lives saved. Our cancer prevention and control programs are spreading out across the state and to our affiliates providing screening programs for various types of cancers and education on ways to prevent or reduce the risk of getting cancer. And while we are working on prevention, research and treatment, we also provide emotional and financial support to patients who are battling cancer through a number of patient support programs. We understand that cancer takes a physical, emotional and financial toll on patients and their families and the Markey Cancer Foundation provides basic necessities like transportation, groceries, gas and help with utility bills to enable patients to focus on their healing. Our cancer burden is great, but our drive to eradicate it is even greater. We are asking ourselves bold questions like "how can we decrease cancer death rates in Kentucky by 50%". We did not become a National Cancer Institute designated center by taking the easy path. This race is a marathon, not a sprint, and now, more than ever, we need the support of our community, our state and our nation to change the outcome. Board Chair Statement The Markey Cancer Foundation board is an all volunteer board coming from many different perspectives, all committed to one goal: eliminating the suffering of Kentucky's citizens, and beyond. There are always economic challenges and downturns, but cancer doesn't have a downturn--it still keeps rising and touching more lives. Hard times call for hard work! Cancer touches everyone--it's touched our family and that's why I am committed to the cause of the Foundation. 5 Programs Programs Patient Support Description The Markey Cancer Foundation provides snacks, coffee, and water to patients (and their families) while taking chemotherapy and radiation treatments. These are lengthy procedures and they sometimes create a bad taste in the patients' mouths. The snacks help eliminate the taste and provide comfort. Periodically, the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit needs supplies for patients and families. This procedures requires weeks of stay in the hospital. Examples of items purchased include hangers, small refrigerators, coffee makers, and hair clippers. Classes are provided to survivors of cancer. The Foundation provides food for class attendees. Budget Population Served,, Cancer Research Description The Foundation supports the Markey Cancer Center's goal of finding a cure for cancer. Financial support to the Center by the Foundation helps recruit physicians and scientists, pays for lab equipment, and assists with educational needs.
