Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better forever. Background Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville has been serving Montgomery County and the surrounding areas since The agency carries out its mission of serving youth facing adversity by welcoming children in single parent homes, from military families, those who have lost a loved one or are just a little lost themselves as they try to grow and mature. Through the years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has reached out to become a premiere mentoring agency, pairing children between the ages of 6-15 with caring adult mentors. Once matched, the volunteer and child schedule outings based on their common interests. They meet 2-4 times a month with each outing lasting 1 to 4 hours. Through the simple act of building a friendship, the child ends up building selfesteem, social and academic skills, and finding a path toward success in life. Children paired with a mentor do better in school, report better relationships with their parents, set and achieve higher goals and make better choices pertaining to risky behaviors like drugs, alcohol and violence. Impact Children face many challenges in current society, from living below the poverty line to bullying to violence in their neighborhood. They need stability, consistency and the support of caring adults. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville matches these children facing adversity with adults from the community who meet with them regularly 2-4 times a month for 12 months. The pair go on outings to the park, the movies, even just a walk in the park. They build a friendship that encourages the child to reach higher, knowing their Big is there to support them.children in the BBBS program report better self esteem, learn to trust adults in their lives, value school more, and make better decisions when faced with hard choices. Needs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville is growing in the number of children served. To provide the level of support needed to ensure a genuine and safe experience for the child, we need financial support to hire a new staff member who can properly carry out the service delivery model to achieve success for the match and for the child. We need support from volunteers who are willing to spend a few hours with a child two to four times a month in the community or once a week in a school setting. BBBS employs interns every semester to help guide families and volunteers through enrollment. Due to past downsizing, our office is limited in its technology. In order to fully utilize this free resource, we need to purchase at least two additional computer systems and a desk to house them. While we emphasize the one-to-one relationship, BBBS understands the need to come together as a group. We aim to hold 3-4 group activities per year and need partners to provide free services as well as financial support for these Match Activities where Bigs and Littles can come together once a quarter to enjoy an agency-organized event. Strong leadership is always a focus for the agency. Our board has 6 seats open for a civic-minded professional/retiree/community member to step up to the challenge and the excitement of rebuilding the mentoring program. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Our agency is always in need of volunteers, especially male, who can spend quality one-to-one time with a child mentoring them. Monetary donations can be made online, or can be mailed to our office. 3 Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Montgomery We serve the Clarksville-Montgomery County area and Fort Campbell, KY The zip codes covered include: CEO Statement Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville is driving through an intense rebuilding year. Agency numbers are well below our client population and the blatant need in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area. The support of our stakeholders and those who believe in the mission is encouraging and reassuring to staff and volunteers. We truly appreciate the dedication of our donors and the generous giving of your time, talent and treasure. It is necessary that we bring in more resources to reach more children in this community to invest in their future. It is imperative to place our youth on a pathway to successful education and a reduction in risky behaviors. By investing directly in changing their attitudes and perspectives about themselves and their ability to succeed in school, we ensure that our youth will succeed in life.the 2018/2019 fiscal year will see the agency grow tremendously. We are working toward finalizing the enrollment of more than 60 Littles and roughly 80 Bigs so we can pair them into productive mentoring relationships. We have resurrected the School-Based Program where Bigs go into the schools during the school day to meet with their Littles. We are looking for new funding partners and sources as well as pursuing new grant opportunities. Thank you for coming with us on this journey of regrowth. Ever Grateful, Chris Buerck 3
Programs Programs Community Based Mentoring Description Our Community Based Mentoring program is designed to match children, ages 6-15 with a caring adult role-model who will spent 4-8 hours per monthwith the child doing activites the two enjoy. This mentoring relationship is designed to last at least one year and can last longer depending on the child and volunteer's interests. The child and volunteer can engage in a number of activities the two have in common. Budget Category Population Served Human Services, General/Other Mentoring Children Only (5-14 years), At-Risk Populations, Minorities 4
School-Based Program Description In the School-Based program, we partner with local elementary schools to recommend children in 1st through 5th grades who could benefit from one-to-one attention. Once a week the volunteer goes to the school during the school day and meets with his/her Little. The two meet in an area of the school and play board games, do homework or make crafts while talking about their day and their week. These matches meet from August to May and continue each school year, supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Support Specialists. Budget Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Human Services, General/Other Mentoring Children Only (5-14 years), At-Risk Populations, K-12 (5-19 years) The effects of mentoring can be seen in less than a year. We estimate children who meet regularly with their mentor will be more likely to achieve educational success and project that 85% of the children who complete our surveys will have a better attitude about finishing high school and attending college as a result of having a mentor. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program sees positive outcomes in reference to children having better relationships with their peers. We predict that 85% of the children who complete our program and survey will show an improvement in the area of peer relationships as a result of spending time with their mentor. The School-Based Mentoring program will help children realize their potential through weekly, one-to-one meetings with a caring adult mentor. It has been shown and is expected that Littles from Big Brothers Big Sisters, because of their relationship with their Big, make better choices through their childhood and ultimately make better decisions in their adult life. The goal of mentoring these children is to break the cycle of poverty, incarceration and insecurity. In Clarksville, 92% of the families in the program are living below the poverty line. By pairing these children with a caring adult role model, Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to increase these children s individual school performance, decrease their attitudes about engaging in risky behaviors, and give them a better outlook on life, the tools and confidence to pursue and attain higher goals after high school, contributing to their future and making our community better and stronger. At the beginning of each match and at the 1-year anniversary date, children will be administered the Youth Outcome Survey, a 33-question proprietary research tool that measures attitudes toward different key outcomes areas, including how they feel about key areas such as academic performance, school attendance, educational aspirations, family connectedness, risky behaviors and more. Information for the Clarksville BBBS School-Based program is not yet available as 2018/2019 will be the first year for the program. Nationally, in both programs, children report higher in areas of academic, social and emotional categories. According to national numbers, 97% of Little said working hard in school is very important and 94% said graduating from college is very important. A survey of alumni Littles found that 65% agreed their Big helped them reach a higher level of education than they thought possible. 5
Mentoring Children of Prisoners (Amachi) Description The Amachi program, or Mentoring Children of Prisoners, is designed to mentor children who have one or both parents incarcerated in a state or federal prison. These children are living with the parent who is not incarcerated, with other relatives (grandparent, aunt, uncle) or in foster care. These children are at the highest risk of becoming deliquent themselves. The program is faith-based, matching volunteers who are affiliated with a church, with children ages 5-15 who qualify by having a parent who is in prison. One of the biggest barriors to growth in this program is locating and evaluating the children who qualify for the program. Population Served Children Only (5-14 years),, CEO Comments Our agency has the capacity and opportunity to grow and serve additional youth in our area. Since new leadership took over in December of 2017, community outreach and marketing efforts have resumed. The agency has engaged in speaking opportunities with local Rotary clubs, Kiwanis clubs, Civitan clubs and other civic-minded organizations to promote the program and recruit volunteers and potential supporters. New management has a special focus on the military population, both to offer soldiers the opportunity to mentor a child and to offer children of military families the services of a mentor and friend. Growth can be quick -- as seen by the rapid rising number of children and volunteers enrolled in our program. And growth can be slow -- as we fear is the case with fundraising and tithing. We look forward to you joining us on this journey of success. 6

most beneficial ways. BBBS Clarksville has reinstated several program requirements, improved certain processes, updated materials and invested much time and effort into shaping a strong future for the program so that children we enroll may be matched with the best possible mentor to experience and realize the best possible outcomes. The challenge remains to identify and secure sources of funding ranging from grants and corporate sponsors to events and individual donors. The agency staff has worked hard to reignite the program and we are confident our program is successful and worth investing in. GivingMatters.com Financial Comments Financial figures taken from 990.
