2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission For the 2014 Amazing Raise, the Bon Secours Health Care Foundation is asking the community to support the Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center. In conjunction with the mission of Bon Secours to provide good help, the mission of the non-profit Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center is to help people live the new normal. This important patient inspired definition of quality of life guides us in all our services to brain tumor patients and their families. Our nurse-run facility provides practical help for coping with this life-altering condition free of cost, filling in where traditional services lack. In the last four years, the Cullather Center has served more than 700 families at no cost, and continues to add new services every year. We currently serve more than 450 patients and their families. 100% of donor support goes to families in need. All staff administrative costs are covered by support from Bon Secours Richmond Health System. Bon Secours means "good help" in French. The Sisters of Bon Secours began their ministry more than 200 years ago in Paris, France and were the first to care for the sick and dying in patients' homes. That ministry continues today and the mission of the Bon Secours Health System is to bring compassion to health care and to be good help to those in need, especially those who are poor and dying. Recognizing the dignity of all persons, we provide compassionate healthcare services contributing to the physical, social, emotional and spiritual well-being of those we serve. Background In fulfilling the health care mission of the Sisters of Bon Secours "Good Help To Those in Need" -- Bon Secours Richmond Health Care foundation was incorporated for the purpose of soliciting, receiving, and administering gifts and contributions for the benefit of the not-for-profit entities of the Bon Secours Richmond Health Corporation like the Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center. Impact The Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center has served more than 700 families in the last four years at no cost, and continues to add new services every year. We currently serve more than 450 patients and their families. Needs The Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center is a non-profit organization and is dependent on charitable donations to fund our patient services. We do not charge our patients for any services provided, nor do we receive federal funding. 100% of monies raised goes to families in need of the Cullather Center's services. All of the administrative costs of the Cullather Center are covered by support from Bon Secours Richmond Health System. 4 Programs Programs The Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center Description Hope, Inspiration, Care.At the Cullather Center we strive to offer comfort and care for brain tumor patients and their familes. The Cullather Center is a non-profit, free-of-charge resource center with an emphasis on quality of life. Our nurse-run facility provides practical help for coping with this life-altering condition, filling in where traditional services lack. Patients can work one-on-one with registered nurse director, Dr. Sherry Fox. In addition to the nurse director, the center also employees a patient advocate, Cathy Willis, and Lee Carter a License Clinical Social Worker who specializes in counseling services. Together, they work as a team to identify the issues a patient and family are having and connect them to the right resources. In conjunction with the mission of Bon Secours to provide good help, the mission of the Cullather Brain Tumor Quality of Life Center is to help people live the new normal. This important patient inspired definition of quality of life guides us in all our services to brain tumor patients and their families. The essence of our program is much more than the list of helpful services we provide; what really happens at the Center is a ministry shared, a love for all types of people is made manifest, hope is embraced, lifetime friendships are formed, sorrow and grief are faced together instead of alone, tears are dried, loneliness and fear are quieted by a familiar voice on the phone. Behind these doors, our patient and their families' faith and courage continue to inspire. Behind these doors the dream of this Center that arose out of tragedy is turned into a dream of triumph. What happens behind these doors eludes words and is only understood through the heart. Budget $0.00 Long term Success When someone receives a cancer diagnosis, one of the first reactions is, ""What can I do to fight this disease?"" As human beings, we're very resilient and we want to actively fight, and not be passively treated. Research has shown that exercise can provide tremendous benefits for individuals with cancer. It helps to combat fatigue and increases socialization while lifting the spirit and refocusing energy in a positive direction. Thus, our next goal at Cullather is a wellness initiative to create a space where patients can exercise and also receive fitness and nutrition counseling. We would enlist an exercise physiologist and nutrition counselor who know how to cater information toward patients with cancer. With this holistic approach, we take another step toward focusing on the whole person and not just the illness. We think that's especially important for anyone with a brain tumor. As you know, these patients have unique needs compared with other cancer patients, because the location of their tumor may impact them cognitively, cause them to have to leave their work and limit their activities. They may not be able to speak or move certain parts of their body. Having a wellness center provides important support for patients and their families. 4

The ""Healing Vibrations"" fund will allow the center to give patients/families access to such activities as yoga, healing touch, guided imagery, nutritional support, art and music therapy, therapeutic massage and cadre of other complementary therapies that can enhance quality of life. Often financial constraints prevent access to these supportive services; thus donations to this fund will provide a very special gift to patients and their families. 5
