2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of United Methodist Urban Ministries is "To Care For Our Neighbors In Need." Background What is known as Urban Ministries came into legal existence on June 28, 1984 as a non profit corporation chartered by the State of Tennessee under the name United Methodist Urban Ministries/Clarksville District. This incorporating followed a series of meetings by some pastors and laypersons who had become concerned that basic human needs were not being adequately met in the Clarksville/Montgomery County area. The desire was to develop a strategy to assist local congregations in designing and implementing ministries addressing the needs of persons, as our community was experiencing rapid growth. Although the original intention was to be an information and referral agency, Urban Ministries quickly became a community-wide service agency offering direct client assistance in emergency food, shelter, utilities, medicine, and other areas. In response to observed needs, Urban Ministries instituted the Victim Assistance Program, operational from July 1986 through June 1991, and established the SafeHouse Domestic Violence Shelter as a sanctuary for battered women and their children. We were also instrumental in the publication of the most comprehensive community services directory ever compiled in Montgomery County. We will soon compile the 19th edition of this yearly directory. Our publication of the Clarksville Youth Yellow Pages has provided a direct link between middle and high school youth to crisis information and accessible contact numbers to services throughout the area. Urban Ministries adherence to its mission has resulted in a commitment to deal with problems of hunger, homelessness, and violence through an organization that works through an active Board of Directors, trained volunteers, and salaried staff. Impact On a cold, snowy morning in January, Mark knocked on the door of Urban Ministries. He had slept outside the night before, was hungry, and was running a high fever. He held two prescriptions in his hand that he had been given at the local emergency room. He had no way to fill them. By the time he left the office, he had been given something to eat, had his prescriptions filled, and was given motel shelter until he was strong enough to travel to his brother s home in Alabama. A bus ticket was purchased for him to make the trip. On his way to the bus station four days later, he stopped by again to express his thanks for the help of Urban Ministries. He looked like a different man. Anna and her two small children came to SafeHouse at 10:00 p.m. one night to escape the abuse of her husband. The abuse had been going on for several years, but had become worse over the last few months, and Anna had finally decided to leave. She and the children went to bed that night knowing they were safe. Urban Ministries specializes in providing emergency services to people in crisis by offering immediate information and assistance. Through the domestic violence program, victims are given information to increase their safety and well being. Three goals for the current year are 1) to increase community awareness of the programs 2) to increase funding for programs 3) continue and expand staff development and training to help administer programs. Accomplishments for the past year include 1) received additional funds for client benefits (i.e., prescriptions, disaster recovery 2) printed a community directory that lists many non-profit organzations and the services they provide to our community at large. 3) distributed donated air conditioners during the summer months 4) provided food boxes to over 2,600 families. Urban Ministries is an ecumenical organization with many diverse groups supporting its purpose. The Board of Directors is committed to the mission by providing support to the staff without interfering with the day to day activities. The Board has great faith in the staff and their ability to provide the necessary services. The Board also encourages the staff and Board members to participate in community activities thus providing an opportunity to inform the community of the work in which Urban Ministries is involved. This service to the community continues to grow as needs of the homeless, working poor, and domestic violence continues to be a societal problem. Urban Ministries desires to continue to support this growth when additional funding is a available. CEO Statement Through two programs Urban Ministries helps those who have no other place to turn for help. In fiscal year , we provided a three day supply of food for 4,504 families, emergency motel shelter for 62 homeless families, assistance with utilities for 1,141 families, prescription medication for 64 people. We provided shelter for women and children who were victims of domestic violence. In addition, we distributed fans and air conditioners, tokens for local bus transportation, baby diapers, personal hygiene items, household items, cleaning supplies, school clothing, shoes, and supplies, Thanksgiving and Christmas Food baskets, winter coats, and blankets. Flexibility is one of the unique aspects of Urban Ministries. When an individual or agency has an unusual need, Urban Ministries is usually contacted because we have a reputation of being flexible. Often we are told that it is just good to talk with someone who will listen. These programs operate with the assistance of fifty five volunteers who last year donated hours to this agency. Five of the thirteen staff persons have been with the agency at least fourteen years. We work closely with other agencies in this community to avoid duplication of services. We are members of the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the Coalition of Homeless Service Providers. 3

4 Programs Programs SafeHouse Description Women who are victims of domestic violence often suffer from low selfesteen, sleeping problems, substance abuse, anxiety attacks, and fragil mental and physical health. Additionally, there are an estimated 3.3 million children each year exposed to vioelnce against their mothers or female caretakers. SafeHouse is a shelter program for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The goal of the shelter is to provide a safe place for victims to heal from abuse and to explore what options are available to them. We can shelter sixteen women and children for a stay of up to 30 days. Last year 301 were provided shelter. During the shelter stay, support groups are provided, community resources explored, and children participate in a specialized program to formulate an age appropriate safety plan. We are beginning a transitional housing program with a house donated to this agency by the City of Clarksville. Budget Population Served, Homeless, Grace Assistance Program Description Through the Grace Assistance Program we help with food, utility (electric, gas, and water) bills, prescription medication costs, temporary emergency shelter, transportation, services to the homeless and seasonal needs such as blankets, fans and air conditioners, and back to school clothing and supplies. We also provide information and referrals to other agencies as needed. Our food pantry helps provide food to hungry families. Additional funding is needed to assist people with utility bills to prevent termination of service.
