2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission March of Dimes fights for the health of all moms and babies. We're advocating for policies to protect them. We're working to radically improve the healthcare they receive. We're pioneering research to find solutions. We're empowering families with the knowledge and tools to have healthier pregnancies. By uniting communities, we're building a brighter future for us all. Background As with our fight against polio before the vaccines, we have been making progress in prevention and treatment of the consequences of prematurity, with limited success in preventing the underlying problem. It took 17 years until the Salk vaccine was developed to prevent the problem of infection with polio. Similarly, our first success with the problem of prematurity was with the regionalization of perinatal medicine in the late 1970s. This NICU network began treating the consequences of prematurity more effectively, and dramatically increased survival. Survival is not enough. We want to prevent preterm birth to avoid the suffering associated with the problem. This is why we launched in 2003 the March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign. The March of Dimes advances the mission through research grants, community services, education and advocacy. The research program seeks to extend our knowledge, develop treatments and preventive interventions for birth defects, prematurity, low birthweight and infant mortality. The community services program funds innovative prevention initiatives at the local and state levels. Awards are made by the Chapter Program Services Committee based on guidelines that reflect national and local mission priorities. The education program develops pregnancy wellness messages for current and prospective parents, particularly those at risk, and for health professionals. The consumer education programs are implemented through media campaigns, classes and seminars, literature distribution, corporate partnerships, and online tools and information. Education for health professionals takes place through information, publications, conferences, grand rounds and educational curricula. Through advocacy, the March of Dimes promotes national and state public policies designed to improve the health of women of childbearing age, infants and children. Public policies involve expanding access to health care coverage, advancing health promotion and disease prevention programs, and funding research to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Impact The March of Dimes Strategic Plan for Implement a multi-faceted campaign to reduce rates of premature birth. - Fund research related to basic biology, genetics, prematurity and birth defects. - Educate the public and health professionals on mission relevant topics. - Advocate for increased access to health care coverage for women, infants and children. - Work to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy outcomes and infant health. - Serve as an information resource on maternal and infant health in English and Spanish. - Prevent neural tube birth defects through folic acid initiatives. - Collaborate with international partners to improve infant health. Needs Board Leadership & Volunteers prepared to lead us into the next 80 years through fund raising, advocacy, community awareness and developing new leaders in the community. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer March of Dimes partners with groups and individuals through volunteer opportunities, utilizing in-kind gifts, social media engagement, advocacy, and monetary gifts both on-line and in person. We hold three main events through out the year including the March for Babies in April, Signature Chefs Auction in October, and Nurse Of the Year Awards in November. I'm not sure if I can put into words how it feels to sit day after day in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, hoping and praying that your child continues to breathe and grow. My family was so fortunate. Success in the March of Dimes, however, is more than having a child survive a premature birth. It's not having a premature birth at all. We're fighting for the lives of all babies, and that starts with fighting for the health of all moms, giving them the knowledge and tools to have the best and healthiest pregnancy possible. Won't you join us? CEO Statement My son Keegan was born with a hidden birth defect that nearly took his life when he was only a few weeks old. My dearest wish is that no parent ever has to hold their child as he struggles to survive. Because of research and support through the March of Dimes, he's now a teenager searching for his college for next semester. I was lucky. Many other families aren't as they face premature births and other birth defects that threaten the lives of their children. Each week, over 220 babies are born prematurely in Tennessee. That number is far too high. Besides the emotional costs, there is a cost to society. Nationwide, the cost of premature births is over $7.4 billion dollars a year to corporate America. Your March of Dimes Tennessee Chapter is here to help these families. With volunteer support and generous funding from our donors, we are able to help save so many babies from death or disability. Last year, we invested more than $1,300,000 in Tennessee for program services, including national research grants, community grants, and local public and professional education. The March of Dimes has a longstanding track record of success. Since 1938, we have faced insurmountable challenges, such as the conquest of polio, through the support of the American people who joined our cause with spirit, determination and generosity. One of the keys to achieving our dream is through research. In 2004, the March of Dimes created a new 2 million dollar Prematurity Research Initiative to study key questions in developmental biology related to causes of death and disability in newborns. Over $800,000 was recently awarded to Vanderbilt University to help us find these answers. We have started programs for NICU Family support. Moms, Dads, Grandparents and siblings need emotional support and guidance while their baby is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We have also started a community Share website so that parents can find sources of comfort and knowledge from each other. Where parents can be reassured they are not alone. 3
