2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission NOFAS MidSouth is committed to prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). NOFAS MidSouth provides advocacy, support, and education, and serves as a resource for the FASD community in the Mid- South. Background Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are the most prevalent preventable cause of developmental disability. Moreover, FASD is 100% preventable if the mother does not drink during pregnancy. NOFAS Mid-South is dedicated to the prevention of FASD in Memphis and surrounding areas. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) was first described in medical literature in 1968 by French doctor Paul Lemoine but was largely ignored by the public and medical professionals. It was not until Drs. David W. Smith and Kenneth L. Jones at the University of Washington Medical School recognized a group of physical anomalies among children whose mothers were alcoholics that the medical community took heed. In the ensuing 40 years, as research has continued, the umbrella term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders has come to describe a wide array of physical, intellectual, developmental and behavioral effects directly attributed to maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy.the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS), founded in 1990, is a national non-profit organization focused on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). NOFAS works to educate the public about FASD and the risks of drinking alcohol while pregnant and advocates for improved public policy for people affected by FASD. NOFAS serves as a resource for people living with FASD, as well as educators, care providers and other professionals seeking information about FASD. NOFAS has a network of over 40 affiliates around the United States.NOFAS Mid-South was formed in Memphis in 2013 by a group of individuals affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) through children, grandchildren, or siblings. Because of our connection to FASD we have a passion for prevention, and for supporting other affected families and individuals. In 2013 we formed a board, became an affiliate of NOFAS (National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) and established a 501c3 not-for-profit entity. We spent the next two years networking with other NOFAS affiliates and learning the work of FASD prevention and family advocacy.in August 2015 we hired our first part-time employee and began the work building brand and cause awareness and establishing partnerships throughout the community. The eradication of FASD in the midsouth continues to build momentum as we strengthen ties with area agencies that serve women in their childbearing years and children with developmental disabilities, and become more active in direct service delivery. Impact NOFAS MidSouth has been in the planning and strategizing phase of development since hiring an Executive Director in August of The Salvation Army Purdue Center of Hope generously donated office space in a high-traffic area of their Social Services wing, where each week dozens of individuals are exposed to our message of awareness and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).In 2016 our focus has been on coalition and awareness building. We have developed a website and social media presence, and created and distributed printed informational materials. Through local radio programs, social media campaigns and health fairs we have disseminated information about the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders to over 60,000 people. We traveled to Nashville for Disability Day on the Hill, joining with thousands of social workers, advocates, effected families and individuals and other concerned citizens to raise awareness of and advocate on behalf of those with developmental disabilities. Our Executive Director and board members met with members of the Memphis congressional delegation and asked for their support in eradicating the number one cause of developmental disability Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Our public seminar with FASD expert Dr. Leigh Tenkku Lepper of the University of Missouri educated over 100 attendees representing more than 30 area agencies, and we were pleased to present to over 50 Lebonheur LEADS workers at an in-service meeting. Early in 2017 we are slated to present our message at Porter Leath staff inservice meetings. We continue to seek opportunities to educate both vulnerable populations and the individuals and agencies that serve them. In 2017 as we continue to expand in active service delivery, we are implementing programs to take our message to women in their childbearing years by partnering with care providers, service delivery agencies, schools and churches throughout the midsouth. In the first months of the coming year we are confirmed to provide education to Agape's Families in Transition Life Skills Training program, and the Operation Smart Child program at Neighborhood Christian Center on an ongoing basis, and are in conversation with several other area agencies and school officials about taking our message to their populations. 2

3 Needs NOFAS Midsouth needs opportunities to educate the public about prevention and effects of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). If your organization, school, church, or other civic group would like to host a presentation about this prevalent, yet 100% preventable cause of developmental disability, please contact Ellen Hafen at (901) We also need monetary contributions to cover our operating costs and in-kind media donations in the form of television, radio, print, blog or other. NOFAS Midsouth would also like to invite the public to participate in our social media praise of restaurants who prominently display the required-by- Tennessee-law Fetal Alcohol Syndrome warning sign in their establishments. When you are in an area restaurant and see a warning sign, please take a photo and send it to nofasmidsouth@gmail.com. Please include name and location of the restaurant, along with the names of any persons in the photo.the amount of alcohol that constitutes "one drink" is often grossly over estimated. So that we can create a concrete visual representation, we are in need of serving glasses of the following types and sizes (may be mix and match):shot glass 1.5 ozcordial or Sherry 3ozWine glass 5 oztumbler 8 ozbeer mug or pub glass 12 oz Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas MidSouth NOFAS Mid-South primarily serves Western Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and Mississippi, but we will give support, assistance and referrals to anyone who contacts us. 4 Programs Programs Prevention Awareness Education for Professionals Description Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are the number one preventable developmental disability, and Awareness Education is the number one factor in prevention. NOFAS MidSouth's board members/volunteers are prepared to provide education on the effects and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Exposure in a variety of formats from small informal discussion groups to large audio-visual-enhanced lectures. We believe that sustained efforts in educating care-giving professionals about the risk of alcohol exposure to the fetus will bring about a paradigm shift regarding alcohol and pregnancy. Our Prevention Awareness Education for Professionals Program seeks to inform and empower professional caregivers to use their influence and expertise to prevent Fetal Alcohol Exposure. Our Prevention Awareness Education for Professionals Program reaches helping professionals in their workplace, through Lunch and Learn, staff inservice trainings, and seminars. We are in the momentum-building stages of this program, and are off to a great start. As we continue to work with area agencies, schools and the public to raise awareness and provide prevention education we feel confident that we will have long-term success to report in the coming years.
