2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Challenging college athletes and coaches to have a passionate and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Background WhoUWith? Ministry is a non-profit organization established in August 2001 that works directly with the student/athletes and coaches at Vanderbilt and Belmont University. We provide weekly Bible studies with sport specific coaches and athletes, faith-based character development, leadership training, and one-on-one mentoring. We challenge them in their walk with Christ and encourage them to invest in the lives of others. We like to describe what we do with three core values: Invest, Inspire and Impact. When student athletes arrive on a college campus we look to Invest in their lives by attending practices, one-on-one meetings, and having the athletes into our homes for dinner. Through our time of investing, we hope to build a level of trust that encourages the student/athlete to attend our weekly Bible studies or team chapel services where God can begin to Inspire their hearts towards a life of following Christ. With our ministry celebrating 14 years of service, we are starting to see the Impact of our investing in their lives and God inspiring their hearts. We currently have former student/athletes who work in the business districts of Chicago, New York, and Nashville while others play professional baseball and football. There is even one former student/athlete serving as a missionary to Columbia, South America. We have a Naval Commander stationed in Italy where he leads a weekly Bible study on base. Impact Impact Statement Accomplishments over the past year: 1) About 200 student/athletes and coaches served through small groups, one-on-one meetings, and Bible based character development studies. 2) Worked with several athletes to develop their leadership and took them into the community (local schools) to make an impact on others. Impact Statement Goals for current year: 1) Raise the finances to bring on another staff member to serve the male Olympic sports teams (i.e. basketball, baseball, tennis). 2) As a result of our leadership development, begin peer-to-peer mentoring groups amongst the athletes. Needs 1) Food gift cards (Sam's, Kroger, etc.) to provide food for weekly Bible studies and Vanderbilt FCA meetings. 2) Scholarships for an annual FCA college retreat. 3) Scholarships for coaches and their families to attend a summer FCA spiritual enrichment camp. 4) Funding for training resources: leadership curriculum and Bible study materials. 5)Staff training funding Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Anyone desiring to support our ministry can give in several ways: mailing a check payable to WhoUWith? Ministries, giving online at our website, donating stocks or property and we are also an undesignated United Way agency #3447 Service Categories Primary Organization Category Religion- Related / Christianity Secondary Organization Category Youth Development / Youth Development-Religious Leadership Tertiary Organization Category Religion- Related / Areas of Service Areas Served 2
3 TN - Davidson WhoUWith? Ministries serves athletes and coaches at Vanderbilt who come from all over the country. Board Chair Statement Missions Trips & Acts of ServiceIn 2012, Who U With sent Vanderbilt athletes on our first spring break trip in partnership with Homes for Hope in Ensenada, Mexico. We started and completed a home for a young, homeless couple and their 8-month-old son. Our second trip in 2013 was to an orphanage in Jeremy, Haiti. We spent the week investing in over 100 orphans and assisting in simple construction projects. In 2014, we traveled to Peru and partnered with a former Vanderbilt athlete ('88) who has been serving as a missionary to the Lima, Peru region for 8+ years. This past year we did our first domestic mission trip to New York City. We partnered with Graffiti Ministries and served in some of the toughest areas of New York: the Bronx and Brownsville. You may have seen on the SEC Network where we recently assisted the Vanderbilt University athletic department with their efforts to help the Columbia, SC flood victims. Our ministry raised the $2,500 necessary for the semitruck, driver, and fuel. In one day, our athletes loaded the semi-truck with over 2,400 cases of bottled waters that were donated by the greater Nashville community in the flood relief campaign. Our Home After working in donated office space for our first four years, Who U With moved into a small house in the summer of '05. The impact of having a "home" for our ministry and a place for student/athletes to meet in small groups and one-onone with staff was immeasurable! Early this year ('15) we were told that our little house was going to be leveled to make way for an office building. What seemed to be the end of our greatest tool of ministry (outside of our staff) was only the beginning of a new journey to a new and improved facility. We are now located less than 500 yards from the athletic facilities and have bigger and better space to serve our coaches and athletes. For example, we currently have student/athletes representing every team on campus attending our Tuesday night meetings. CEO Statement In the summer of 2012 we hired Courtney Grah to serve as our Director of Women's Ministry. Courtney works with women s basketball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, cheerleading and swimming. She mentors female student/athletes in a one-on-one setting to provide a safe environment for the young women to discuss anything going on in their lives. Courtney also conducts one-on-one mentoring with female coaches to encourage them and guide them as they go through tough seasons, decisions of discipline with athletes, and personal struggles of marriage and children in light of their schedules as D-1 coaches. Courtney shares with both the student/athletes and coaches the value of having Christ in their lives and answers questions they have about their faith. Courtney also leads two weekly Bible studies, one with female coaches, and one with female student/athletes, where the groups go through different material together to learn more about each other, their faith and how to be a positive and Godly example for their teammates and other young ladies in the greater Nashville community. This grant request would go to support our entire women's ministry and specifically the efforts of Courtney Grah as our Women's Director. Through her work, WhoUWith? Ministries has seen greater involvement and connection with the female athletes and coaches at Vanderbilt University and have even expanded in the fall of 2014 to serve the women's basketball team at Belmont University! 3
4 Programs Programs Ministry House Description The ministry house is located right off the Vanderbilt campus and provides a place for our weekly Bible studies, mentoring sessions, board meetings, office, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings. It also serves as a get away place for the athletes and coaches at Vanderbilt to relax and hang out. We have an average of 50 people using the house weekly. It is here that the relationships are built that allow us to positively impact the lives of these college students and adults. Budget Category Population Served Religion Christianity Young Adults (20-25 years) -- currently not in use, Adults, Men's Ministry Description The men's ministry covers programs for male athletes and coaches at Vanderbilt. We offer weekly Bible studies, game day chapel services, leadership development, and community outreach opportunities. We provide everyone involved with the necessary resources. For the community outreach we take young men out to local schools (middle, high, and college) to share with the students their life stories and encourage them to succeed on and off the field. We also provide funding for coaches and their families to go to a week long summer camp to encourage them spiritually and strengthen their marriages. In 2007, we paid for and sent about 20 male athletes to an FCA college retreat where they were challenged to step up as leaders and be godly role models on and off the field. Budget Category Population Served Religion Christianity Male Adults, Male Youth/Adolescents (14-19 years), Women's Ministry Description The women's ministry of WhoUWith serves the female coaches, athletic administrators, and athletes at Vanderbilt. We provide weekly Bible studies, prayer meetings, mentoring sessions, and community outreach opportunities for all who are interested. We have taken several of them into local schools and churches to share their stories and encourage the youth to excel on and off the court. We also pay for and send about 5 of the athletes to an FCA college retreat every winter. Budget 2500 Category Population Served Religion Christianity Female Adults, Female Young Adults (20-25 years) -- currently not in use, Female Youth/Adolescents (14-19 years) 4
5 CEO Comments John (not real name) came to Vanderbilt on a football scholarship in He participated in a few of our weekly meetings and even attended two Fellowship of Christian Athletes retreats that we annually scholarship student/athletes to attend. He would tell you today that he was living two separate lives. He would live the life of a leader and someone of good character in front of his coaches and me (Lance Brown, Director). However, he was living another life of alcoholism and sexual promiscuity the rest of the time. After graduating, John spent a short time with an NFL team and then went into private business. He immediately became very successful. Despite this success, his private life was a mess with his continued drinking. It was not until he hit his lowest point of nearly over dosing and committing suicide that he realized some significant changes needed to be made. Through the prayers of a loving mother and the memories of things we (WhoUWith? Ministries) taught John while he was at Vanderbilt, he was able to embrace a personal relationship with Christ and radically turn his life around. He has been drug and alcohol free for over six months! He is now engaged and committed to abstain from sexual intercourse until his wedding night. He has asked me (Lance Brown) to officiate his spring wedding. It is for the college student/athlete, like John, that WhoUWith? Ministries was founded. College is a very tough time of adjustments and finding yourself and your purpose. We are here to give guidance, love and purpose to these athletes and coaches. 5
