2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Calvary Rescue Mission is a nonprofit, faith-based shelter for homeless men. Our mission is Rebuilding the Lives of Homeless Men. Calvary is more than just a homeless shelter we minister to the whole man. We provide spiritual guidance, healthcare connections, substance abuse counseling, education and career direction, food, shelter, clothing, and the love of Jesus Christ every night of the year. The mission focuses on a person s entire life: physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and social. Although the mission is operated as a Christian ministry, services are offered to ALL men who come to our doors without consideration of their faith or religious preference. We help homeless men learn how much God loves them and help them gain the biblical insight they need to lead a productive life. Background Founded by Milton and Betty Hatcher in 1967, Calvary Rescue Mission provides overnight lodging; serves two full meals a day; offers clothing to the homeless; has a 2,500 volume library; provides healthcare connections, education and career direction; and provides nightly chapel services, counseling, and a mentoring program. While Calvary Rescue Mission is in the heart of downtown Memphis, homeless men come to the mission from all parts of the country, in need of food, clothing, and shelter. Calvary's van visits the downtown area of Memphis daily and transports homeless men to the mission. Every evening, following a home-cooked meal, local ministers and church leaders conduct Christian worship services. The mission has been blessed to have such notable speakers as Adrian Rodgers, Bobby Moore, Bob Pittman and many others. Impact In 2017, Calvary Rescue Mission served over 500 homeless men (unduplicated individuals) with 12,783 nights of lodging and served 38,749 meals. Calvary completed its new building in June 2018, and will be serving a greater number of homeless men in a new handicapped accessible building that is debt-free. Needs Calvary Rescue Mission completed its new building in June 2018 and will be starting a new five-point program to help homeless men escape homelessness forever. A generous benefactor has offered to match up to $100,000 in donations for the UPRIGHT program. Donations marked as "matching gift" will be applied to this program that will provide discipleship, works skills training, GED program, addiction recovery, and medical/dental clinics. Donations can be made online at or through the mail at P.O. Box 2077, Memphis, TN The mission accepts monthly gifts, planned gifts, matching gifts, and gifts-in-kind. Financial donations and material goods (canned goods, clothing, toiletries, etc.) go a long way to helping the men who are served by Calvary Rescue Mission. Additional opportunities include volunteering to serve meals or speak at a chapel service. CEO/Executive Director Statement Our new building will enable Calvary Rescue Mission to offer full handicapped accessibility, a better facility for food preparation, better sleeping conditions, new bathrooms and showers, counseling rooms, training rooms, and an overall safer environment. Using a comprehensive approach, the new facility will help Calvary to partner onsite with other ministries to address some of the root causes of homelessness, including substance abuse, job loss, mental illness, and debilitating physical problems. Calvary can better address these root causes of homelessness with a more spacious, modern facility, and offer a new, positive message to homeless men: your life is valuable. 4 Programs Programs Meeting Basic Needs Description Basic physical needs are met at Calvary Rescue Mission with food, shelter, security, hot showers and personal hygiene items, lockers, clothing, dorm room, healthcare connections, and two hot nutritious meals per day. Shelter is provided for one night or for up to 24 months if deemed necessary. Two nutritious hot meals, breakfast and supper, are prepared and served on site each day. Sack lunches are provided as the men go out each day to work, seek work and/or engage in training, counseling or mentoring. Hot showers and personal hygiene items are provided. Clothing from the inside out, including weather appropriate items, are available to those who are in need. Locker space for any personal items is provided This is very important to the men at Calvary Rescue Mission since they own few items and are often very attached to what they have. Security and safety This is often mentioned by men at Calvary Rescue Mission as being difficult to find on the street or at other shelters. Because Calvary s staff are held accountable to the same standards, the men at Calvary can go to sleep at night knowing they will not be robbed, raped or abused. Health care is provided through a partnership with Memphis Health Center that connects homeless men with an ongoing health care provider. Budget $225, Target Population Strategy Long term Success Homeless Yes Since its opening 49 years ago, Calvary Rescue Mission has provided 588,548 overnight lodgings for homeless men who needed a safe and warm place to sleep, and 1.4 million meals have been served. By December 2018, with 108 available beds in the new facility, the Mission is projected to provide 30,353 nights of lodging each year for an average of 83 men per day. Short Term Success Over the past 12 months Calvary Rescue Mission provided 12,767 overnight lodgings; served 38,695 hot meals; and gave clothing to 691 men. 4

5 Lasting Transformation Description Through the Lasting Transformation program, Calvary Rescue Mission provides spiritual guidance, mentoring, substance abuse counseling, education and career direction, and God s love every night of the year. Lasting Transformation includes nightly chapel services and testimonies from people who have overcome addictions, dealt positively with rejection and other issues they encountered as children, survived chronic homelessness, regained or found their faith and moved on to productive lives. A discipleship program developed by Reverend Bob Freudiger includes Bible Study, mentoring, living a disciplined life, and learning to help others do the same. Counseling and coaching are provided to men as they work to make better decisions and overcome addictions. Referrals help men receive job training, addiction services, legal counsel, resources to address other personal challenges, and in some cases, job placement. The Mission helps to alleviate poverty by helping homeless men transition into living successfully in restored family relationships; earning a living; overcoming addictions, and pursuing Biblical healing. 8 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start Jan Reverend Bob Freudiger Experience Under the general management of the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the day to day and long term operation and overall management of the Mission as limited and empowered by the organization s bylaws. Reverend Bob Freudiger is the Executive Director of Calvary Rescue Mission. He is an ordained minister and a graduate of Crichton College and Mid-America Seminary. Since 1996, Brother Bob has led Calvary Rescue Mission in providing spiritual guidance, healthcare connections, substance abuse counseling, education and career direction, food, shelter, clothing, and the love of Jesus Christ. Brother Bob and his wife, Barbara, have been happily married since 1985 and have three grown children. Yes June 2019 Comments Organization Comments As a 501(c)3 organization, Calvary Rescue Mission receives no funds from local, state, or federal government. Our ministry exists because of the need for providing hope, help, and care to hungry, homeless, addicted, and disenfranchised men in our community. We rely on the generosity of faithful donors who give financially, as well as the time and talents of the hundreds of individuals and groups who volunteer at the Mission, to meet the ever growing needs of those seeking help. 11
