2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of The American Negro Playwright Theatre (ANPT) is to foster a public appreciation of theatrical productions written by and/or about the culture and heritage of African-Americans. Background The American Negro Playwright Theatre (ANPT) was founded by veteran actor, director and playwright Barry Scott, who also currently serves as the organization s Producing Artistic Director. As an actor, then working regularly with the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Scott said he was frustrated that the theater was doing no plays by or about African-Americans. He said he especially wanted to do a production of Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun, and Tennessee Repertory officials told him Nashville didn t have enough black actors to do that play. Thus, Scott started ANPT and presented the play himself as its first production in But Mr. Scott wanted more than just to present a play; he desired to create a sustainable future for African-American theatre by telling their stories and sustaining the images of African- American people. In 1992, ANPT filed and received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). For 10 years, ANPT s works were commissioned and performed at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). After several years of residency at Tennessee State University (TSU), ANPT was housed at The Next Level Arts & Entertainment Mindset, located in downtown Nashville, TN. Additionally, ANPT successfully partnered with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) and the Nashville Public Library to share its productions with the community. Today, ANPT is a non-profit entity devoted to outreach, education and empowerment through the arts, as evidenced by its various programs and events. In essence, ANPT is telling stories that must be told. Now in its second decade, the artistic merit of ANPT remains exceptional and uncompromised. Impact 2013 Accomplishments: 1. Performances of numerous one-person shows depicting the life and times of individuals such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Rwandan genocide survivor Immaculee Ilibagiza. Additionally, presenting Romeo & Juliet at Maplewood High School as a call for peace. 2. Meet the Author series, allowing notable authors the opportunity to share their stories and tips for success with the community. 3. Spaghetti Supper-a platform to discuss issues in the community in a family-friendly setting while partaking in a nutritional meal Goals: 1. Additional one-person shows (Ida B. Wells, Coretta Scott King, Marcus Garvey) 2. "Consider the Source"-free Theatre Arts workshop, hosted by Barry Scott 3. "Inspired Moments"-a fun filled session for children consisting of music, dancing and education, hosted by actor, artist and vocalist Sharese "Reecy" Jackson. 4. "I Am Theatre"- (Inspiration and Motivation through Theatre) summer program offering professional theatre training to secondary school students. 2

The way we approach the arts is with the understanding that nothing can happen without fostering relationships with others. We hone the relationship building process through our programs, which are developed specifically with the knowledge of what arts have the ability to do for people they create awareness of societal issues, they educate, they inspire, they incite action, and much more. 3

4 Programs Programs Community Matters Most Outreach Initiative Description Budget Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The purpose of this initiative is to simultaneously build new audiences for the arts and provide live theatre experiences to underserved audiences of Nashville-Davidson County, Tennessee. Underserved audiences are defined as: Youth [children age 18 and younger] People living in isolated/rural settings People of color People with disabilities, and Senior citizens As part of the Community Matters Most Outreach Initiative, ANPT has partnered with Metro Nashville Public Schools (where more than 50% of students are youth of color) to present live performances at selected high schools in the urban core of Nashville. Thus far, ANPT has identified three plays to present to selected schools: Rosa, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Romeo & Juliet. 8,000 per play Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other History & Historical Programs Adolescents Only (13-19 years), At-Risk Populations, Adults Classroom educators will find that these performances, along with ANPTprovided study guides will enhance their curriculum. Presenting historical and classical content to those who may not have otherwise been exposed will impact and broaden one's perspective and understanding of how certain events have come to shape the environment in which we currently live. The success of the program is measured by the number of people served, the demand for services in the schools and the response of the audience. Following each show, there will be a question and answer session which will delve into the audience's reaction to the content they just witnessed, venturing to ask what they thought, felt, and believed about the experience. Dangerous Women premiered October 2013 at the Manna from Heaven Dinner House in Nashville, TN. 75% of the attending audience participated in the post performance discussion. The audience unanimously recommended that the plays be presented in local schools. Meet the Author premiered in October 2012 as a pilot program in two middle schools impacting 500 youth. Meet the Author was presented in in seven schools in October 2013 impacting more than 1400 youth. 4

5 Old Fashioned Spaghetti Supper Description Once a month, ANPT hosts an Old-Fashioned Spaghetti Supper, after which, a video clip or documentary is shown as a catalyst for discussion. The mission of the spaghetti supper is to encourage creative thought and civil discourse on a variety of issues in the community and in the world as a whole. The discourse is as nutritional to the attendees, as is the food. The event is marketed to and welcomes the general public. While there is no admission charge for the supper or the documentary, donations are encouraged and accepted. ANPT hopes to become an ambassador to other communities, as those in attendance witness the discussion and suggestions for improvement/action, we hope to incite change and solutions for the issues discussed during the event. Program success is monitored by audience attendance and participation in the discussion, as well as retention While there are regular attendees, often new people attend who have yet to experience a performance. We have received considerable positive feedback from past attendees. Those in attendance have enjoyed the event to the extent that even after we have concluded, many stick around to continue the conversation. Additionally, we receive many inquiries as to when is the next spaghetti supper. 5

6 I Am Theatre Description Category Population Served Short Term Success Long term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success I Am Theatre (Inspiration and Motivation through Theatre) is another component of ANPT's Community Matters Most Outreach Initiative. It is an exciting summer program that provides Nashville's area secondary school students with an intensive professional theatre training experience. Each participant will learn to perform a one-person performance consisting of excerpts from the works of leading contemporary African-American playwrights. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Adolescents Only (13-19 years), Adults, Young people will begin to learn how a professional theatre works and gain experience that will be valuable in later establishing themselves as professional artists. Young people who have the desire to pursue a career in theatre will gain hands-on experience as performers, technicians and managers, as well as make professional contacts with others in/interested in the field. Participant attendance and personal/professional improvement based on their skills and knowledge upon entrance as compared to their body of work completed by the end of the program. Past I Am Theatre productions have instilled confidence and a sense of direction in participants. For example, one individual suffered from a speech impediment, however, once onstage and by the end of the program, there was no trace of the impediment. That individual has gone on to obtain work in numerous other stage plays, commercials, and television shows both locally and nationally. 6
